PC Manufacturers Embrace 64-Bit Vista
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 7.5.2008
We knew it would come sooner or later, and from the looks of it widespread 64-bit computing might be on the horizon.
Just yesterday we posted the results of our poll asking whether you’re running a 64-bit operating system, and only about a quarter of you are. That could be changing as more PC manufacturers start to push 64-bit machines.
TG Daily noticed that Gateway had started to ship consumer PC’s that are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium. They dubbed Gateway the “first large PC vendor” to make this move, but after looking around I noticed that others are doing the same thing. HP is offering a 64-bit Vista option on many of their laptops and desktops, and some are as low as $449… nearly half the price of Gateway’s cheapest 64-bit computer. A little more digging revealed that some ASUS notebooks are also shipping with a 64-bit version of Vista.
Now we’re just sitting back waiting for other manufacturers to start adopting the technology. It’s definitely nice to see the transition to 64-bit starting to take place, and hopefully by large vendors like HP jumping on board some of the compatibility issues will be eliminated for those adopting 64-bit.
The next time you go shopping for a PC don’t be surprised if you’re walking away with a 64-bit operating system!

screw you guys, i want xp. or linux wah, wah. you suk. sniff sniff
this was probably microsoft's ultimate goal with vista (pardon the pun), to make people
transition from x86 to x64. i can totally see it happening throughout vista's lifetime.
as soon as more vendors start making x64 software and hardware, xp will become
a memory in the minds of power users and developers.
i've seen millinium, 2000, xp, xp pro, vista 32bit, & now vista 64bit. all in 8 years.
is it me, or is this a money thing, as in m$!!!!
i've seen dos 5, dos 6, dos 6.22, windows 3.11, windows 95, windows 98, windows
millennium, windows 2000, windows xp home, windows xp professional, windows xp media
center edition, windows vista home basic, windows nista home premium, windows vista
business and windows vista ultimate. all free since dos 6.22 and a game has never
appeared on any of my monitors. all in all, guys, everything has remained pretty much the
same over the past 16 years...
this is a good first step but what should really happen is microsoft should stop making
32bit os's. 32bit is old and needs to be taken out back and shot. all these dual and
quad core cpu's are worthless in a 32bit environment. it would force hardware/software
makers to adopt 64bit.
a friend at work brought in a new 17" gateway laptop. i was shocked to see it was 64 bit
vista. i told him and he didn't even know, he bought it at a retail store. i asked if he
could handle vista to start with and if he knew anything at all about 64 bit but no of
course not. he didn't even know how to turn off uac but knew it was bugging him. what a
clod. vista should have been 64 bit only and without drm.
i ran 64 bit vista for a
few months, yea, it's fine for a real pro who can make it work right and get it all
smooth but the average dude will be lost. i think a lot of unwary consumers won't be so
happy with 64 bit machines let alone vista.
nick, i think your wrong about people knowing how to use 32 but not 64. its exactly the
same, apart from the 3rd party apps. in vista the is wow (windows over windows not world
of warcraft) so it pretty much runs 32 apps natively, you wouldnt notice the difference.
the only real disadvantage of 64 is that it requires more hard disk space for the os.
last time i checked 64-bit computing is far more superior, only large scale applications
take advantage of this. also, the os is able to support 128gb of ram, etc. your an idiot.
once software companies take advantage, x86 will be a thing of the past.
i bought the 32 bit edition. threw it away and bought the 64 bit ultimate.
4 gigs of
memory and your good to go. why buy all this 64 bit hardwared computers if you dont use
it. stupid
they will probably sell systems with a gig and the they will run
like junk.
they would of sent it to you free because you had already bought 32 bit version. hahaha
