Whats happening to Windows XP on June 30th?
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 27.4.2008
This is what MICROSOFT SUPPORT LIFECYCLE BLOG says :
I want to take another break from the discussion of the overall Support Lifecycle policies to address some common confusion that we’ve been hearing regarding the support dates for Windows XP.
Recently, there have been a number of posts in the blogosphere about Windows XP and the upcoming end of Direct OEM and Retail License availability. Some people are interpreting this as the end of support for Windows XP.
Please let me try and clear this up… Support for Windows XP will continue, in accordance with the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy. This means that the Mainstream Support phase will end on April 14, 2009 and the Extended Support phase will end on April 8, 2014. That’s at least another 6 years of support remaining for Windows XP!
Remember, that Windows XP was launched in 2001 and Microsoft committed to providing a minimum of 10 years of support (5 years of Mainstream Support and 5 years of Extended Support) at the time it was released. In accordance with the policy, when we announced the updated release date of Windows Vista, Microsoft also provided additional 2 years Mainstream Support for Windows XP. Last year, we also announced the addition of an Extended Support phase to the consumer editions of Windows XP. Supporting products for this length of time is not something that is typical in the software industry. This is a significant advantage for Microsoft customers, because it allows for future business planning and allows our customers to maximize their investment in Microsoft technologies by understanding how to achieve the most productive use of the product.
So, what is really changing on June 30th? To understand this, I would recommend reading the Windows Lifecycle Policy page and the official Support Lifecycle pages for Windows XP. Essentially, this means that OEMs and Retailers will not be able to obtain new copies of Windows XP. That’s it. System Builders will continue to be able to obtain XP through January 31st, 2009.
There is still plenty of support left for Windows XP. If you read any stories that say otherwise, don't believe them. :)
Have you seen any posts that don't tell the full story about Windows XP support? What has been your experience with understanding the Windows XP Support Lifecycle policy? What are your thoughts on the length of support for Windows XP? Please leave us some comments and tell us about it!

xp is good enough no support needed. spend time fixxing vista so my sound card will work!
get a better sound card,
vista is a pile of crap and micro$cum knows it, so do all the system builders. vista is
destined to end up in the dustbin of history.
i have no idea about an os, so i will bash it instead.
which means i belong in the
dustbin as well.
first of all, without any support, xp would belong in the dustbin.
secondly,
it's not microsoft's fault your sound card doesn't work. blame your card's vendor. if
your vendor can't get a stable driver to microsoft in time to include it in the windows
disk, microsoft weren't the ones sitting on their thumbs. oh, i'm sorry, i didn't know
microsoft was supposed to be blamed for everything wrong with every piece of hardware ever
built for the pc.
if you can be bothered to research the reason creative cards don't like vista you'll
see microsoft is to blame.
come over to the darks side...
patience windows 7 is coming.
vista is the new windows millenium, a dud!
xp is a fu cken piece of s hit. i got vista jan '08 and have not experienced one crash.
xp formatted my comp in nov '07 crashes at random times why? because its an
old piece of s hit o/s meant for p3 computers.
upgrade and move on. nothing
wrong with vista. sp1 makes it work even better and its not slow. all you need is a
core2duo 1.66 and 2gb of ram and it runs just fine.
so dont complain if you
dont want to upgrade.
xp pisses me off and it crashes like a piece of sh it
with ie7.
and dont tell me to use firesu cks 2.0 because thats another piece of
s hit memory hogging browser. firefox 2.0 su cks and xp su cks.
if you want to
use your fires hit 2.0 and xp sh it go jump off a fu ck ing bridge.
im sick of
all your bu ll shit saying its the best.
xp is not the best and fire fox is a
piece of s hit browser.
opera is clearly much better.
so go fu ck
yourseles and your windows vista bashing and fire fox s hit .
fu ck off
and die
that's right, i didn't bother researching creative cards because i don't consider them
a good enough brand for my own use. it seems like most people who complain about hardware
issues are either nagging about creative or hp printers. neither company makes the best
hardware in their respective categories.
fact is microsft shouldve communicated better with hardware manufacturers about their new
os. they didnt. this is documented fact. look around you. do a google search. there are
lots of hardware and software problems with vista because microsoft screwed up. dont blame
anyone elese for their mistakes. case in point? take a look at the microsft in capable
trial. released internal memos going back n forth where top microsoft employees admit they
shouldve communicated more with people about their new os..and they didnt. they further
commented that they knew people didnt trust or like them.
vista is great, xp is old..
why do you need support for xp anyways. either it works or it doesnt. the only support
you need is an antivirus program and a firewall. who uses windows firewall or defender.
drivers come with the hardware. so what is the big deal. people are still useing 95, 98,
nt, 2000 bla bla bla. you dont need support or updates for anything actually if it was
made right to begin with. nothing get exploited/hacked what ever you want to call it if
you have a decent firewall. so who really cares. just something to heckle over like a
bunch of bored women. gossip gossip gossip.
