The Ugly Side of Vista SP1 vs. XP SP3

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 25.4.2008

With Windows Vista and Windows XP concomitantly available on the market, the Redmond company inherently catalyzed the comparison between the two Windows clients.

But the fact of the matter is that the benchmarks, comparisons of features, capabilities, market shares and security vulnerability measuring contests performed since Vista became available have managed to hurt Microsoft's Windows business where it counts more. In the end, the repercussions of the constant Vista RTM vs. XP SP2 which grew into the smackdown of Vista SP1 and XP SP3 have unfavorably impacted the Windows client total revenue and operating income.

On April 24, Microsoft published its financial results for the third quarter of the 2008 financial year, and the picture is bleak to say the least when it comes down to the Windows client division, including both Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3. "Client revenue decreased during the three months ended March 31, 2008, primarily reflecting revenue of approximately $1.2 billion recognized during the third quarter of the prior fiscal year upon the January 2007 release of Windows Vista to consumers," Microsoft stated.

In the quarter ended March 31, 2008, Windows client revenue amounted to just $4,025 billion, having plummeted no less than 24% compared with the similar quarter of the past year. Back at the end of March 2007, Windows client accounted for no less than $5,274 billion in revenue, which translates into a difference of $1.2 billion. Operating income dropped 26% from $4,204 billion in Q3 2007 to $3,097 billion in Q3 2008.

"Client revenue increased during the nine months ended March 31, 2008, primarily reflecting licensing of Windows Vista. During the three months ended March 31, 2008, OEM revenue decreased $1.1 billion or 25%, primarily reflecting revenue recognized during the third quarter of fiscal year 2007 related to the technology guarantee program, partially offset by a 5% increase in OEM license units," Microsoft added.

Microsoft continues to see the largest portion of Windows client revenue coming from operating system copies that ship preloaded with OEM computers. Even though machines from original equipment manufacturers saw an overall growth of just 8% to 10% worldwide, Windows OEM revenue jumped by $1.3 billion or 14%. However, Vista sales, even with the advent of Service Pack 1, failed to match those of the Vista RTM. And the fact that, as of April 21 Windows XP SP3 RTM is added to this equation, does not deliver good signals for future market performances of the Vista SP1 client.

it seems the service packs don't make a compelling argument

if you look at vista and xp separately in terms of added functionality, stability, and performance, both respective service packs (sp1 and sp3) contribute little to the reason for either os existing into the future.

i say this notwithstanding xp being established in the computing community. this only holds true if you consider xp and vista from a clean slate.

Vista

well vista blows..many people are choosing to stay with xp for good reasons. lets see: vista cant run programs any better...despite the claims vista does not have better security than xp. why the hell does vista even exist?

By make bill money on 26.04.2008 - 07:04
why? to make bill more money. to try to stop bootlegs of win-whatever. the more they do, the more will go to linux. i still use xp, hate vista, and am now tinkering with linux. if i can get wine to work well, i am done with windows forever!

vista runs slow bc it has drm. (defective by design) digital rights management queries the os every 30 seconds to report to redmond what the user is doing. anyone who uses this version of drm baked into vista is a n00b. ill never use it. xp until i die. vista is packed with redundant features that people really dont need. xp is superior in many ways for advanced users such as myself. vista is for n00bs.

how do you know drm queries the os every 30 seconds? i thought it was every 20 seconds hahahahaha. i'm sure all the pirated music and movies being played on vista computers all over the world means microsoft has the resources to process all that data being sent back and report those users to the appropriate authorities...ya right!

vista's drm is only designed to downgrade the quality of high def content if played on an optical drive from a genuine commercial disc. this is moot to begin with since blu-ray encryption was cracked last year if not further in the past.

xp also has drm capabilities in terms of blocking protected wma and wmv files, but nobody dares say anything bad about xp. sheesh.

it's true that microsoft chose to pre-set a lot of the advanced features of xp in vista. and it is ironic that the only way to change some of them is to go through the command prompt, given how this is how the earliest windows versions had it. it did infuriate me at the beginning, but as long as you know how to make the changes you want, the gui is a lot cleaner. things like the system restore disk space aren't things you change every day.

I talk BS

By Jon on 27.04.2008 - 13:04
