Microsoft could keep XP if customers want it: CEO

Microsoft could re-think plans to phase out its Windows XP operating system by June 30 if customers show they want to keep it but so far they have not, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said.
"XP will hit an end-of-life. We have announced one. If customer feedback varies we can always wake up smarter but right now we have a plan for end-of-life for new XP shipments," Ballmer told a news conference on Thursday.
Microsoft (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) has announced that it will stop licensing Windows XP to computer makers and end retail sales by June 30.
Ballmer said most retailers sold computers with Vista, the latest version of its Windows operating system, and most consumers were choosing to buy Vista.
Some consumers have complained they were unable to buy XP at retail stores, or as consumers. They say that in order to get XP they must buy their computers as small businesses.
"In the business environment, we still have customers who are buying PCs with XP" because information technology departments often have to work with old machines, Ballmer said.
Vista requires high-speed central processing units installed only in newer machines.
Ballmer was also asked whether the company would appeal against an 899 million euro ($1.42 billion) antitrust fine imposed by the Brussels-based European Commission in February.

that makes about as much sense as using vista does.
the end computer users are a lot more computer savy than they were 15 or 20 years ago.
they (and i) would much rather keep using an os that works well (like xp does) than switch
over to an os with so many question marks. i would suggest that ms keep both xp and vista
as active operating systems and then go back to the drawing board and give their next
release a lot more thought and planning.
who in their right mind believes any of this b.s? i'm sorry correct me if i'm wrong but
was there not a signed petition going around to stop m.s. from pulling xp off the shelves
in june? unreal!
completely nuts. he thinks the end users have not shown that a lot of them want to keep
xp???????
there is one item that has not changed since windows inception - the recycle bin,
incidently that is where vista belongs :)
m$ has already done the damage. they only give a shit about businesses that bribe them
hard enough, not to us regular customers who have to pay obscenely high retail prices.
maybe i should have purchased a legal copy of windows xp sp2 dell oem for my dell computer
since my bios was updated to handle the slp code !
put me in the recycle bin too, that’s where i belong as well...
vista sp1 and xp sp3. job protection failed economy!
is he freaking crazy? millions of people saying they hate vista, blogs, articles,
downgrades from retailers, and he has the balls to say "so far they have not(shown
interest)"
who really believes this crap? hurry up winblows 7 win minwin.
is anyone have latest statistics about how well is xp sale on the market compare to
vista?
i have heard that xp sp3 do not require the product key during the setup, if it is so
then does a genuine key is inserted automatically after installation for just 30 days(like
vista) or the product key column of system properties just remains empty...
i
wanna ask this since it would be easies to crack wpa in such case...
vista is a joke: its microsofts new cash cow. xp pro is superior on any hardware old or
new. even on the latest quad core xp pro leaved poor vista in the dust performance wise.
this is a fact n00bs! if you like drm then support vista. xp dont have it baked in to the
extreme extent like vista. vista was implemeted by microsofts hollywood partners.
microsoft, guys you are going to be the ones to put your self out of business. not you
competitors.
