Better the Windows Vista devil you know

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 17.4.2008

Forrester Research is advising its clients against skipping Windows Vista when planning their operating system deployments.

But one of the reasons Forrester is using — because Vista’s successor, Windows 7, will no doubt will be late — is not a good assumption, in my book.

As crazy as this sounds, I don’t think I’d count on Windows 7 being late — even though Microsoft’s track record for on-time Windows deliveries is abysmal. The primary reason: Steven Sinofsky. Sinofsky is the head of Windows and Windows Live Engineering. He used to run Office development. One of Sinofsky’s biggest claims to fame is making the trains run on time.

Couple Sinofsky’s track record with the fact that Windows 7 will likely be a minor upgrade to Vista, plus the fact that the Softies gave themselves quite a bit of extra breathing room with the 2010 due date, and I’d say it’s more likely Windows 7 will ship early than late.

Forrester’s guidance was part of a pair of Vista-related studies the market-research outfit released on April 16. (Neither of these was based on a survey of a set group of customers; both were “anecdotal, based on discussions Forrester has had with its clients about their plans,” a company representative noted.)

In “Lessons Learned From Early Adopters Of Windows Vista: How Businesses Can Overcome The Most Common Migration Challenges,” Forrester Researcher Benjamin Gray offers business users a checklist to help with Vista migrations. On the shortlist are a number of common-sense tips, including “Tie the OS upgrade to your natural PC refresh cycle to ensure hardware compatibility” and “Stay on top of your independent software vendors to ensure application compatibility.”

In the other report, “Building The Business Case For Windows Vista: Five Reasons to Start Your Migration Soon,” Gray advises business users against waiting for Windows 7 and expecting to jump from an older Windows release directly to Windows 7, which Microsoft has said it will ship in 2010.

Forrester claims that “for large businesses, there’s no viable alternative” to moving to Vista. “According to our latest hardware survey, Microsoft operating systems are powering 99% of North American and European enterprise PCs and 97% of small to medium-size business (SMB) PCs,” Gray said. Gray decribed Mac OSX and Linux as alternatives for specific niches only.

Gray said the availability of Vista SP1, plus Microsoft’s decision to phase out XP on the bulk of new PCs, as of July 1, also were good reasons companies should plan on moing to Vista. Windows 7 is largely an unknown, at this point, Gray argued:

“To be blunt, customers know very little about Windows 7. Besides when it’s slated to become available, they know that it’s going to be a full release. Meaning? It’s going to have a business version and a consumer version — and knowing Microsoft, multiple versions of each. It’s also going to support both 32- and 64-bit computing. Beyond these tidbits, everything else is pure rumor and speculation. But it’s important to keep in mind that Microsoft doesn’t exactly have a clean track record for delivering products on time. It also tends to strip out promised features in order to hit deadlines (e.g., WinFS from Windows Vista). Ironically, one of Microsoft’s biggest weaknesses — the unpredictable release schedule of its desktop operating systems — will likely spur adoption of Windows Vista as a result of this lack of faith in Microsoft delivering Windows 7 on time.”

There’s no question that most customers have next-to-no real information on Windows 7. But do you agree with Forrester that the devil you know (Vista) is better than the one you don’t (Windows 7)?

By Jon on 18.04.2008 - 07:04
its about time..... man i switched from vista and upgraded back to xp pro 3 months ago. i havent looked back since. vista is slow and clunky. and no, my hardware is not old. i just hate vista. the drm is too baked into the os. slows it down. microsoft could learn a lesson from all this. i despise the built in spyware that calls home every 30 seconds... they think everyone can afford to go out and buy a top of the line pc, say quad core with 4 gigs of ram..etc..this isnt realistic. vista is a pig wearing lipstick plain and simple. xp for me.

Forrester Research...LOL

"forrester research claims that “for large businesses, there’s no viable alternative” to avoid moving to vista." -fixed

sounds to me like forrester is a paid shill for m$ trying to convince large business that they must move to vista. what f.r. didn't reveal in the report was how much of a kickback m$ is paying them. ;)

ZDNet just like Softpedia

it’s hard to take the word of half of the noobs here about vista, i vista running fine on my old pc...

what’s worse is that we had the same type of talk about xp when it was first released... spyware this bloat ware that, i have heard it all before... time you people grow and stop this bs talk, it’s getting old...
no one cares if you want to keep using xp, i am still using xp, plus i will remain with vista; there is nothing wrong with the os at all...

what a load of bull$hit

By some1 on 18.04.2008 - 14:04
mate .. there is nothing wrong with vista. i'm starting to think ppl putting down vista just so they sound like they know what there talking about. u n00bs get over it, my 2 year old pc work great with vista. i'll *never* go back to xp.. it would last a month before i had to reinstall it.. i've had it vista running for over 5 months and its still going strong !!!

Vista

By Me on 18.04.2008 - 14:04
at someone:

first of all i am not your mate. it sounds like you come from down under, an aussie possibly. i only mention this bc aussies have to pay nearly triple the cost we do, here in the states for windows vista. why? bc microsft can get away with screwing people.

let me explain something: get this through your kangaroo head: many many people do not like vista...its slow and clunky on new hardware: it is not backwards compatible with xp..hardware and software that should run fine just doesnt work..people are upset...so have a little empathy. xp never had problems to this extent by comparison. plus, the simple truth is that anything vista can do xp can do better. vista is nothing more than their bank account to them. they dont care about people, its all money to them. got it n00b???

Same thing as windows 2000

By Chucky on 18.04.2008 - 15:04
i agree with some1 (by the way "me"). i remember the same argument about windows 2000 when xp first came out. now people are doing the same for xp. so when windows 7 or 8 comes out, there will be an outcry to save vista. just get over it and move forward and accept that change happens...stop being packrats and living in the past and enjoy the security of the new windows now and to come and that xp does not have.

Vista

By Me on 18.04.2008 - 15:04
at chucky:

why should i pay for vista? i hear windows 7 is due out june of 2009...xp runs all my programs fine until then.

windows 7 in june 2009? what are you smoking? i want some of it

By yoyoma on 18.04.2008 - 15:04
the os development cycle at microsoft is 3 years minimum. that means that any betas of win7 won't be available until at least 2010 and my guess is win7 won't make it onto store shelves until late 2011 at best.

not that it really matters to all you xp lovers. what makes you think win7 will be more like xp and not vista? what makes you think win7 won't be vista second edition, with all the same security features and drm that you all consider "bloatware"?

and no, vista's drm does not contribute to it's slowness on older hardware. the drm is only used by the os on high def content, not dinky little wma or mp3 files. xp has drm built into it as well, but you don't hear anyone complaining about that. it's like people want to find every little thing wrong with vista and b***** about it till the cows come home.

go find an article written about xp in late 2001 and early 2002. people said the same things about xp, how it was unstable, ugly, and that product key activation was just big brother bill checking up on us.

if you can't switch to vista for whatever infrastructural reason, fine. keep using xp. your licenses will still be valid after june 30th. but if you're in the market for a new computer, remember that with each passing month, average hardware specs are getting better and vista can run smoothly if you're willing to tweak it enough. then again, xp can run way faster than out of the box if you tweak it as well. you just have to abandon your quick fix mentality and put in the effort to see the benefits of running vista.

XP BECOMES HISTORY AFTER JUNE 2008. SP3? WHO CARES!

Vista just flies...

By Vista is good!! on 18.04.2008 - 20:04
let's thank microsoft for vista with sp1-notillegallydownloaded.

:-)

XP fools

By vista user on 18.04.2008 - 21:04
isn't it about time people grew up and accepted the fact that xp is only fast because it's an old os running on new hardware?!?

shame on you people...if you slate vista i dread to think what your life is going to be like when you jump from xp to milestone7...afterall it's based on most of the vista development.

in my opinion these people should stop monaning and actually learn to setup their own pc to perform the way it should under an up-to-date operating system.

I Agree that Vista is much much too much too Expensive

By Vista is Good! on 18.04.2008 - 21:04
m$ should cut the prices and sell for $50,= ultimate edition.

re: me

By lol on 18.04.2008 - 22:04
what does make windows 7 makes better then vista or xp ? you talk you know everything but in matter of fact you don't know anything. windows 7 will get everything what vista has + extra other crap to annoy people

Performance

By Me on 18.04.2008 - 22:04
i hear that windows 7 will have use a system file kernal called minwin...meaning it will have all the advatages of vista without the bloat.

minwin

By wubbles on 19.04.2008 - 00:04
ms never stated they would use it for windows 7, they just talked about possible use in future products.

plus minwin is a completly stripped down kernel only capable of running the bare minimum - hence its called minwin.

for an actual operating system for people to use they will have to expanded it considerably.

i hope with windows 7 they manage to learn from testing minwin and reduce the size and system resources, but having something the size minwin as the kernal looks very unlikely.

DUDES I JUST PUT VISTA BACK ON MY PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By XPito on 19.04.2008 - 01:04
i downgraded (or rather upgraded) to vista again on my p4 and 1 gig of ram. its faster than it was before, and faster than xp. move back to vista sp1!!!!
