Gartner: Windows collapsing under its own weight

Microsoft’s Windows juggernaut is collapsing as it tries to support 20 years of applications and becomes more complicated by the minute.
Meanwhile, Windows has outgrown hardware and customers are pondering skipping Vista to wait for Windows 7. If Windows is going to remain relevant it will need radical changes.
That sobering outlook comes courtesy of Gartner analysts Michael Silver and Neil MacDonald. Half of a full room of IT managers and executives raised their hands when asked whether Microsoft needed to radically change its approach to Windows. “Windows is too monolithic,” says Silver.
Silver also gave another anecdotal point to show the conundrum Microsoft is in: Clients are calling him to ask whether they should skip Vista entirely and wait for Windows 7, which promises to be more modular and potentially lightweight. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has also found an impact on Vista from all of the Windows 7 chatter. Silver’s recommendation: Go with Vista but on an attrition basis. As XP PCs die, replace them with Vista PCs.
MacDonald argued that Windows may need multiple kernels to support increasing demands from customers and hardware makers. “One size doesn’t fit all,” says MacDonald. For instance, look at the various demands an OS has to deal with:
If Microsoft’s response is to become more complex Windows’ fall will accelerate. As Windows stands today it’s already too bulky.

all you have to do is read through the files of xp and vista and you will find 3.1 files.
here's a good one "c:\windows\system32\progman.exe". there's more and then there
files that they just don't know if they show take them out, if someone might need to run
something from 1990. microsoft programming is become like pack rats "i might need that
some day"
3.1 = 85 mg
95 = 300 mg
me = 400 mg
2000 = 900 mg
xp =
1.5 - 2 g
vista = 10 + g
and the funny thing is they all work about the same.
sure they do get better. but should have to carry the history with them. oh yeah some
version get fancy too.
i have used literally every version of microsoft windows since it was created & as far as
i can see. whats really changed over the years is the sheer volume of microsoft add-on's
& extras, some genuinely useful others an utter waste of time & space.
every
time microsoft has released a new version of windows it has re-arranged the deck chairs on
the titantic. some features removed or relocated or renamed. occationally there have been
some really good inovative changes such as ntfs file system, plug & play etc.
but windows xp for me is probably the peak or apex of windows os development. xp has about
the right balance of feature & functionality whilst retaining an intuitive user interface.
vista is a step backwards in my opinion and having tried it, i removed it to return to my
trusty old xp pro. vista is bloat-ware and its like driving the qe2 it takes ages to turn
a corner let alone steer full circle.
i wont be buying or using vista but
waiting with an open mind until the next major windows development release whenever that
comes.
as a novice-slightly above novice user of the free ubuntu, i have to say that, initially,
i thought it was a bit of a joke. then i learned just how powerful this os is and at some
point i will be totally migrating from xp pro - probably when i have no choice but to.
ubuntu simply is a work of art, only hope they don;t try to emualate the ms rubbish coming
to us nowadays. love xp, love ubuntu, hate vista with a passion. a very silly os
bad to the bone
agree with by srkag by alex xp great but vista pulled out a scanner on my vista pc
drivers?????no no had to use xp pc
m$ should stick to what they do best - an excellent operating system, the rest should be
a consumer choice according to their needs or demands and the freedom to choose where they
get their optional software.
m$ has lost the plot - vista is akeen to morbid
obesity.
too many packaged mediocre applications and pretend petit bougeois
visual effects overshadow the technological advances in vista.
