Gates: Windows 7 may come 'in the next year'
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 5.4.2008
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates on Friday indicated that Windows 7, the next major version of Windows, could come within the next year, far ahead of the development schedule previously indicated by the software maker.
In response to a question about Windows Vista, Gates, speaking before the Inter-American Development Bank here, said: "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version." Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."
Most of Gates' speech was devoted to topics closer to home for the crowd, such as how Latin America can be more competitive.
Windows 7 and its intended feature list have been the topic of speculation since Microsoft discussed some details of the new software last summer.
At that time, Microsoft said little except that Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.
Less than 24 hours ago, a Microsoft representative told CNET News.com that the company expects to ship the successor to Vista roughly three years from Vista's January 2007 debut.
Unclear is whether Gates was referring to early testing of Windows 7 coming within the year, as opposed to a widespread release or debut. An early test geared toward developers would be conceivable. The company has repeatedly said that it will accelerate the development of new Windows versions, largely as a response to Vista's roughly five year gestation period.
Microsoft on Thursday declined to extend a lifeline for Windows XP, saying that only a limited number of specialized machines will be sold with the operating system after June.
The company said it will continue to allow Windows XP Home edition to be sold for a class of computers it calls "ultra-low-cost PCs."
Vista, the current version of Windows, has sold well, according to Microsoft. But the operating system's debut was marred by repeated delays and shifting feature lists. Last week, Microsoft stepped up efforts to drive adoption of Vista by businesses.

i gave up the vista after 1 long suffering year and took the financial lost on vista. i
upgraded the os back to xp on my 1 year old intel quad cores 6600.
lesson learned: i
would not jump the gun and i would not paid for the window 7 as quickly as i did with
vista.
vista is a stinker and microsoft knows it: the truth is they're frantically trying to
rush windows 7 into develpment and get it out asap to make up for vistas shortcommings. i
will definately evaluate windows 7 with a very large grain of salt before buying after the
train wreak known as vista!
why is it that everyone repeatedly slams vista. its a fantastic operating system and most
of you just judge it on when it first came out. if you'd given it time you would have
seen how many great features it has and how fast it can be
yes thats right i am gay, plus i am looking for love. can anyone help me?
i doubt windows 7 will be released so soon..
i will remain with vista, as its
working like its meant to.
vista is good and xp also good. it is depend on what are going to do with you pc. xp rich
in software compatibality - because it has underwent lot of testing over number of years.
vista is rich in term of security - because it is the latest which was launched after many
testing. and vista is still young - cannot compare with xp. xp had same problem when it
was at the same age with vista. so, xp is good for those who prefer compatibilty. vista is
good for those who are not realy concern with compatibilty at this moment. the decision is
in the user hand. xp user and vista user. i am using both.
microsoft corp. said thursday it will keep selling a version of windows xp for use on a
new breed of low-cost computers for at least two years longer than the older operating
system will be available on mainstream pcs.
in other words we will fu*k them
again with windows 7
vista isn't that bad, before sp1 came out it was buggy as hell. but since the release of
the service pack its been great.
i see any major progross after installing of sp1 on vista in practice. it remains as a
weak os. i hope dat windows 7 learns enough of vista's mistakes...
u idiot people........first thing is ur computers r not capable of running vista.secound
is u dont know how to run n operating system and last is ur r nt able 2 crack
it............so over all......u dont have ne worth to speak about vista.....go buy n
original one n see how it touches the sky..........
windows 7 will run with the same protocols as vista, older software has been using hacks
of sorts to run on xp. this no longer works on vista, so it’s down to the software
developers to get their act together...
you're living in the past. quit living in the past!
its funny, he can create stuff like that, but does not know how to work vista :)
at iq: listen you little p.ussy! not everyone likes microsoft's new cash cow? you got
that? surprize many people prefer a stable os like xp..so shut the f.uck up about vista.
please microsoft stop putting vista down our throats - we don't want it and will
eventually just vomit the damn poison!!!
interesting that this article is about windows 7 and yet very few comments reflect that.
like little children sating my daddy is better than yours.
vista, xp, linx,
mac, etc,etc
use whatever suites your fancy.
are the same person!
just to let you know jj, vista is much more stable then
xp. so learn to close your mouth and think before you speak. if you prefer to be those
cavemen you see on tv, just stick with xp and stay in your cave.
please ignore comments from these 2 users...
look i can use the name kn staff too
please ignore comments from me, jj and
nick.
now seriously:
codyp & iq are the same with same ip
please ignore
comments from these 2 users!
yours sincerely,
the keznews staff
i am 2 people with different ips
please ignore any of the comments from me.
yours sincerely,
the keznews staff
stop jerking around with the keznews staff you moron!!!
windows 7 will be rushed out in the next 12 months and be full of bugs and have
compatibility issues.
but it will be the latest os and the people that love
vista now will turn against vista and love the new thing.
microsoft will tell
everyone that it's the best most secure os to date and most people will believe them.
keznews will bash windows 7 and report on how some useless jerk has hacked into
windows 7 in less than 2 minuets.
i've seen the future and it's not orange,
it's linux.
bill was speculating and drawing a buzz since the first quarter is gone and this was a
huge market time frame for visa to make or breat. it has failed with the business
community. i use vista- i have it running great, but its heavy and bulky. people aren't
willing to upgrade ram or their processors to run vista with its negative reviews. i
believe windows 7 could come out more quickly just by stripping allot of junk out of
vista- i'm also running windows server 2008 and its pretty impressive at default level
with allot of services turned off. windows 7 will be a splashy looking stripped down
version of vista. i believe bill is talking about getting betas out in 2009. how funny
when it took over 4 years to get out vista.
if vista is so good.. why do i have a system wide sound stutter with any player, or
media, and any sound card i try.
sure it's an older pata 865p p4 3.0.. but
damn.. only think i've done to fix mp3 playback is use kernel streaming support in
foobar, but the rest of the system sounds still stutter... junk
millions of people use vista and do not have that problem.. which means it is you, not
the os. your computer is, junk.
i have it on my hole, one you guys from this site, gave it to me.
xp copped the same type of bashing,
now we have the next gen of kiddies bashing
vista..
as stated many times, i would not take the word of those who bash
vista, when i have vista working fine on my system.
if you have bad drivers
installed, vista will run with problems. if have no idea how to fix your drivers, then i
suggest you go back to xp...
bill gates is not chairman of microsoft
you are one hell of an idiot..
i never said it was perfect, if you pay
attention to my posts you would know that.
i love how you are all nice to some one
who likes xp then cuss out some one who prefers vista. and i only called it junk when he
reffered to the os as junk for no real good reason. he wasn't even smart enough to find
the fix for that problem. "oh its vista, lets just try a bunch of sound cards, we all
know drivers aren't the problem!"
i don't understand how i can be an idiot
if i can run vista fine with minimal problems, when it seems you can't.
btw jj
can't have herpes, he can't get laid.
gates means that the first public builds and betas of windows 7 will become available
this/next year. it is possible it may be finished by 3rd quarter 09 but not likely i think
he means public rc's and betas
at codyp:
fyi i am married and actually do have incredibly satisfying s.ex
with my wife.
you upset me because you stated his pc was junk. i am sorry,
vista is junk. i think coming from someone who alpha/beta tested longhorn/vista endless
builds i am qualified to express that opinion, so go fu.ck yourself you moron.
ohh he's married, has an incredibly satisfying "s.ex" life.
btw except for
the end there that was the first decent statement i have seen you make.
so you
do have herpes.
its herpes or doesn't get laid. live or die, make your choice.
*saw theme plays*
that is how seriously i take you.
when vista was in beta stages it had bugs, beta means its in test phase, so bugs are
expected.
wow, you really love vista eh? you just can't get enough.. let me break it down for
you.. yes, my computer is behind the times, its a p4 running at 3.72 ghz, and yes its
stable. i have 3gb of ram and its running on a p4p800e dlx board. although i agree that
vista runs fine on newer hardware i tested, my computer should run it fine without any
issues. there really isn't that many technological improvements to vista to justify the
performance hit. your being a complete fanboy and not seeing the other side of the coin at
all.. yes we need innovation, but not just in features in performance too.. and if you
have to hit performance, they better be beacause of some real features..
i have vista runing on an p4 3 gig 2.5 gig ram. acer aspire t620 which is an old
gigabyte ga-8i915p-mf baord,
performance is not a problem, so i have no idea what
your problem would be.
none of you really read what i say...
i am just giving the argument for vista's
sake because it does not deserve the rep it gets. especially since it is alot better than
xp. how is that being a fanboy? i still go into xp when i want to copy and paste a large
amount of files, i use linux when i feel like being mischievous. and i never use mac
because i don't have one, and i do not feel they are worth the money. also vista may not
be worth the money to most people. vista came preinstaled with my machine, but if it had
come with xp i would of still been happy. it was because i used vista and its environment
for months, then going back to xp when i created a dual boot, made me realize all of xp's
weak areas. i use xp for copying pasting huge files, and for gaming. two things i do not
feel that vista works great for.
but vista, over all feels superior to me.
