Microsoft: June 30 Windows XP cut-off set in stone
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 3.4.2008
Microsoft made it official on April 3: There will be no new reprieves for Windows XP (other than on Ultra Low-Cost PCs).
Some customers and partners had been hoping the company might extend again the deadline for all PC makers to be allowed to preload Windows XP, rather than Windows Vista, on new PCs. But today, Microsoft officials said the current June 30, 2008 cut-off date would remain in place for the vast majority of machines.
The one new exception, as some were anticipating, are Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULPCs), which Microsoft defines as systems like the Asus Eee and Intel Classmate — “significantly more restricted hardware with less expensive processors and more limited graphics capabilities. ULPCs should not be confused with the higher-priced and more robust UMPCs, or Ultra-Mobile PCs (a k a “Origami” devices); Microsoft is continuing to encourage UMPC makers to build their systems around Vista.
As Microsoft officials announced on April 3, makers of ULPCs will be allowed to continue to preload XP on ULPC machines until June 30, 2010, or one year after general availability of the next version of Windows, whichever comes first, according to Microsoft.
(Microsoft has said that its target delivery date for Windows 7, the next version of Windows, is some time in 2010.)
The majority, if not all, ULPCs are not capable of running Vista, with its higher RAM and graphics requirements. But they can and do run Linux. That proved to be a good incentive for Microsoft extending the XP cut-off deadline for those low-end machines.
For plain-vanilla PCs, Microsoft is holding fast to its June 30 preload cut-off for XP. (In September, Microsoft granted PC makers a five-month extension, allowing them to continue preloading and selling at retail Windows XP until June 30 of this year. ) As Microsoft noted previously, users still will be able to get XP preloaded on new machines from white-box vendors/system builders through January 31, 2009. And Vista Business and Ultimate customers with volume-license contracts can still get XP via their “downgrade” rights.
Microsoft will still provide mainstream (free) support for XP until April 2009. Extended support (free for security fixes and paid for other help) ends in 2014.
What’s your take? Did Microsoft make the right decision in holding fast to the June 30 XP cut-off date?

for those pc users who have a conscience, they'll probably end up paying for vista
business or ultimate license and get xp media from somewhere else to be able to install it
legitimately.
but for the xp pirates out there, here's what'll probably
happen: since one of the features that sp3 introduces to xp is the ability to install it
without entering a key at the start of installation, a bootloader crack's bound to crop
up somewhere that'll let people crack xp from the get-go. this'll make xp media that
much more lucrative on bittorrent.
on the other hand, maybe vista's climb in
market share will finally pick up speed after june 30th.
those ulpcs will become some of the fastest selling machines ever because people will
want xp not vista and that will be the only legit option to get it.
xp is an old os, its time to move on..
although xp is getting to be an outdated operating system, the end users who don't
really want to upgrade all their pc equipment (not to stereotype people but in my
experience oap's tend to stick with what the know and like) and who just want a basic
system that will work with all their old/older equipment wont like the change. but as
microsoft are playing hard ball and don't really want to take care of all of their
customers, they will have to hope that their xp system doesn't fall over and that they
keep all their documentation.
see what you can install on xp (which included or can be installed in vista) :
ie7,
windows defender, windows media player 11, windows desktop search, office 2007, live
messenger,...
what's news in vista ? uac ! hahaha !
oh come on, xp has been getting updates and service packs over the years. just because
they have no released the sp3 yet does not mean anything.
i have been useing
windows since 3.1 and in that time i have seen the same bitching like we are now getting
with vista, this nonsense is getting old...
low energy, efficent pcs are the future.
there will be a big increase in these
devices as people slowly relalise they don't need to burn hunderds of watts browsing the
internet etc. (the future will see a big increase in electricity costs)
micro$ft made a big mistake by not anticipating the increase in ulpcs by failing to
produce a suitable small,efficent os.
if is amazing what can be done with a
ulpc, such as the asus eee. it can run windows 2003, burn cds, record and play back tv
programs/dvds etc. the only thing its not good for are games and running vista bloatware.
people do more than burn cd/dvd's and play movies on a pc...
its funny people
said xp is bloatware, now here we are agian with vista and still get the same old crap...
"xp is an old os, its time to move on.."
move on to worse????!!!!
no
thanks!!!!
my steps are always forward, not backward....
and finally, let's crack em all!!!
"my steps are always forward, not backward...."
oh oh i see the problem. it
looks like a step backwards cuz you got your head stuck up your ass.
come on codyp. must you belittle yourself with degrading comments to others here? if you
knew anything about os, you would know vista can not do everything xp pro can.
vista my ass. xp runs fine. the last time people were complaining for that long it was
when me came out! xp was bad at the beginning but i cant remeber people complaining about
that much as for vista after 1 year
well i am just tired of the arguments. the fact is vista is a step forward. granted its
not what we expected, it is more powerful, more elegant, and definitely more stable. i
have had no error screens since i have switched to vista. every argument towards vista
just shows that the people aren't ready for it. but it will never come into its own
because of microsoft's schedule.
i'm just tired of the people who cannot see
the truth because they are stuck in there ways. they are all sheep now.
"i have had no error screens since i have switched to vista"
hahahahahahahahahaha........
codyp, if anyone here's a sheep you are!
what ever microshit produces i'm sure
your first in line being hearded around by the bordercolly m$! you fool. your pathetic!!
one good thing that vista did, was help get linux!!!
its sad some one had to resort to calling me a liar.
and i didn't switch to
vista till about a couple of months ago. so yeah i really went with it as soon as it was
pushed out.
and get over any desktop based operating system. they are not the
future.
and it shows how much of a sheep you are trying to get other people to
use a semi mainstream os. a real person wouldn't care what other people use, and just use
what is good for them. guess what, i don't give a shit that you don't like vista. but
when people say things about it with no real thought, then that pisses me off.
guess what, by typing m$ you just proved you we're a sheep. so your not following a
corporation. your still following the herd.
today in tanzania, 1usd=1900 tanzania shillings and the average monthly salary is around
190,000 for "collar" posts. these are the people who "can" use a pc but the only
choice they have is to buy second hand pc which costs about 2 months salary. how are they
expected to keep up?
linux has a steep learning curve and so many varieties does
confuse some people further. if this were not true.. then i wonder if ms could survive..
people complained about xp until sp2 was released..
vista is clearly a dismal failure as an os. even more than a year out many people
compare it to another microsoft bomb me. vista is the son of me. it sounds like a bad b
movie. the majority it community refuses to touch this os...
vista is simply
bloatware. a dismal failure put out by a dying corporate giant with flecks of glory left
over from the dead longhorn development team that never saw the light of day due to
mismanagement within microsoft. vista basically was microsft's attempt to get into the
movie business by implementing and designing a drm system to satisfy their hollwood
partners, thus creating a dependency on microsoft's version of the hated drm infection. i
recall reading when vista designer jim allchin quit microsoft the very day vista was
released publically! no kidding!) mentioned that pc enthusiasts would hate the
inefficiency of the bloatware and drm spyware he was told 'screw them', they dont
matter. well, i myself will never use vista. microsoft needs to attone for this os. its
pure evil, their cashcow, nothing more. it was not made for the general public.
you know people were saying the same shit about xp...
vista is no way
anything like windows me, only a stupid person would come to that conclusion...
it is just a matter of time before the majority of the people use vista. there are just
some people out there who are resistent to change (change to non-windows os or upgrade
windows os). in addition, if you don't like vista os, you can look for other alternative
os. why the need to complain about vista os so much?
at iq:
i'll bet you work for microsoft dont you motherfuck.er? i can tell anyone
here for a fact that xp never suffered ussues like vista is in its first year out. sorry,
vista is a loooser like yourself there.
goes to show how much you know.. many users had problems with xp when it was first
released.. many bsod..
most people who know there pc's are able to solve the
problems, which in most cases the drivers caused most of problems, which is a third party
problem, bot the os.
vista is installed here and running fine, there is no way i
would take the word people like you, when i know for a fact you are full of crap....
ubuntu linux with automtix no need for ms
i tripple boot xp vista linux
i can
do every thing with linux and its free linux with fastweasel just flys better than ms
it is interesting to read all these vista bashing posts. i think that if you have a good
pc than vista sp1 is the way to go. i cant see any real cpu or ram issues with sidebar
gadgets like cpu guage or memory guage - no more than 50% ram usage and less than 5% cou
usage on idle.
anyway, to sum up, we all have only 4 choices; vista, xp, mac or
linux - its simple - choose one you like the most and be happy, after all its only an os
that hosts the programs we run!
wow jj has to be one of the stupidest people i seen on this site. even if he is just
joking around.
