Microsoft says that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 needs to speak the same language as the RTM version of the latest Windows client. Otherwise there's no game.
The Redmond company revealed from the get-go that Windows Vista SP1 would be delivered in two stages. The first wave of Vista SP1 releases was made available on March 18, 2008, after it was released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008. Wave 0 involves exclusively the English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish versions of the service pack. Attempting to install Vista SP1 on a copy of Vista without having the two products sharing the same language leads to an error message.
"When you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following error message: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 cannot be installed on your computer because the language of Windows Vista you have installed is not supported or you have installed a language pack that is not supported. Windows Vista Service pack 1 can only be installed on computers running the English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish versions of Windows Vista or computers running only those language packs," Microsoft stated.
According to the Redmond company, the error message is connected to scenarios where an user will attempt to deploy language versions of Vista SP1 on a RTM version of the paltform that does not support one of the Wave 0 languages. "The second package contains all 36 language versions of Windows Vista. If you try to install the first package on a computer that has a language pack or a default system language other than German, Spanish, French, English, or Japanese, you will receive the error message," Microsoft revealed.
Outside of users of Windows Vista Ultimate edition which have the possibility of switching between languages, and deploy one of the Wave 0 versions of SP1, the remaining customers will have to wait for Wave 1. Microsoft pointed to April for the RTM of the remaining language versions of Vista SP1.
