Windows Search 4.0 Preview (KB940157)

section: download, for your questions: KezNews forum, 29.3.2008

WS4 lets you perform an instant search of your computer. WS4 helps you find and preview documents, e-mail messages, music files, photos, and other items on the computer.

Please refer to the Knowledge base article KB940157 for a full description of the technology.

So now that it’s (sort of) clear what Windows Search 4.0 is, here’s what’s new in the publicly downloadable build, according to Microsoft:

* Most of the bugs affecting Windows Vista users that were reported by private testers have been fixed
* Performance improvements have been made. Even in this “preview version,” Windows Search 4.0 query times are 33 percent faster than search queries in Vista, according to the Softies.
* Improvements to Remote Index Discovery is now enabling PC-to-PC search to work on all supported versions of Windows
* Rollback Recovery has been added, allowing the search index to roll back to the last known good state; indexes are not rebuilt from scratch if errors occur

Note: The WS4 installation process automatically upgrades previous versions of Windows Search technologies.

i had it enough with the version 3 and it's defently out of my desires forever... doesn't matter if they cover it in gold...

Wonder if they will bypass WSUS again like they did with 3.1?

By gemsurf on 30.03.2008 - 18:03
if this is the resource hog for xp that 3.01 was, forget about it ever seeing the light of day on any of my xp installs. hopefully they won't forcefeed it via wsus like they did in october!

Resource Hog

By mintgreen on 30.03.2008 - 23:03
still a resource hog, uses over 50mb of memory just to sit there waiting to be used (xp).

i can't see what's wrong with the default xp search function myself.

Resource Hog ........ I agree

i loaded it up. looked at all the new services and added up their "mem usage". my total is just over 87 mgs.

It's kick arse...

i'd have to heartily disagree with the criticism. i've run both wds and gds and i'd say this is one of the few cases where ms has it all over the kids from google. it allows me to filter out types of documents much easier. gds just seems to have a preference for returning .pdf files. i can easily hit the email filter in wds then then type "from: billy bob +bbq +recipes" to find my favorite recipe from billy. i've got 5 gig worth of work email and i find wds to be worth every byte of ram it takes up. and i don't find it outrageous either - on my 2gig system, wds chews up 25m compared to 77m for firefox beta 4.

This is am april fools joke right?
