Is Microsoft Playing Games With XP SP3?

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 26.3.2008

Call it a Hamlet moment for the PC industry, filled with political intrigue and machinations worthy of the great Shakespeare play: to wait for XP SP3 or move to Vista now that Microsoft has released Vista SP1?

Or in other words: "To XP, or not to XP?" That is the question.

It's a question that is burning up the blogosphere with some speculating that Microsoft has delayed XP SP3, a long awaited release that could boost the performance of XP, to get more users to adopt Vista, a potential cash cow for Microsoft and PC makers given the operating system's robust hardware refresh requirements.

With many in the blogosphere speculating that Microsoft could release the final version of XP SP3 this week, Microsoft late Tuesday snuffed out all hope that users would see the service pack, originally slated for release in 2006, any time soon.

Instead of a final XP SP 3 release, Microsoft announced late Tuesday a refresh to the XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 version it posted to its Download Center just last month. The software giant cited the need to elicit more feedback from testers, but some solution providers aren't buying it.

"I think Microsoft is withholding XP SP3 until all of the smoke has blown over with Vista SP1," said Patrick Derosier, co-owner of CPU Guys, a Hanson, Mass system builder. "They are dealing with a driver backlash from Vista SP1 which was released only last week."

Derosier said Microsoft is grappling with a raft of Vista driver issues that is hampering the adoption of the operating sytem. He said CPU Guys recommends users stick with XP rather than move to Vista.

Derosier said Vista is not ready for prime time yet. "Vista still needs a lot more hardware support in the form of drivers from major vendors before we can recommend it," he said. "You can tell there is a problem when a major Intel video driver on many chipsets has a problem."

Tired Of Hearing About It

By whozzit on 27.03.2008 - 03:03
i don't think that they're ever going to iron this out. i've been running xp professional for years and lately i've been running vista ultimate right along side it. half of the things that i've been doing in xp for years, can't be done in vista and that's all that there is to it. i suggest that they move off it two directions... the vista direction and the xp direction, at the same time. people shouldn't be made to go through what they went through getting xp to where it is today, just so that the wrinkles can get ironed out of vista.

Tired

By whozzit on 27.03.2008 - 03:03
i guess what i meant to say was, let the gamers go out and buy new equipment and play with vista. but where xp is concerned... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Broke

By PackedFunk on 27.03.2008 - 04:03
xp ain't broke, i agree, so don't fix it! vista on the other hand is another story. vista=me

That's Exactly

By whozzit on 27.03.2008 - 05:03
that's exactly what i meant. if anyone wants to fix vista, they're entitled to work on it all that they want to. the trick to this whole thing is to keep vista off of my three computers. i've tried vista on one of them (twice) and it was quite a job to get xp re-installed after a few days, each time (i'm a slow learner). i'm running ubuntu on a fourth computer and xandros on a fifth (they're both linux). i'm not too impressed with ubuntu but the xandros os is a good one. xandros desktop premium may be the way to go after xp...

Still Got

By whozzit on 27.03.2008 - 05:03
i've still got the installation disks for dos 5.0, dos 6.22, windows 3.11, windows 95, windows 98, windows 98 se, windows me, windows 2000, all eleven flavors of windows xp and four flavors of windows vista. i feel like i should be running a museum or something. when you get right down to it, there wasn't a thing in the world wrong with dos 5.0 when it was used with a good third party shell program. worked good off line... worked good on line. oh, for the good old days (formerly known as these trying times)...

"people shouldn't be made to go through what they went through getting xp to where it is today"

the effort will still have to be made eventually, no matter which platform users choose to migrate to after xp.

and another thing, all those patches to xp attest to its already being broken! the problem is that we still don't know what else is wrong with it until the umpteenth vulnerability is discovered... and patched 2 years after that.

and about dos 5.0. i'm sure it would be a rock solid os on which to surf the web, what with all those text-only websites cropping up every day... not!

Not Needed

By zeitgeist on 27.03.2008 - 09:03
xp sp3 isn't needed. all it will do, if it's ever released, is make people feel they have an up to date xp.

seems to me that all the delays are to try to piss off the many people that have upgraded to xp from vista in the hope that they'll go back to vista.

vista sp1

By harv on 27.03.2008 - 10:03
hey i had my doubts about vista ....tried it and it was not good. however since sp1 it is as quick as xp, all the software works and i have no driver problems. to make vista really move you need decent spec on your computer. i for one will not be going back to xp sp3 or no sp3

I HATE YOU ALL

By Vista on 27.03.2008 - 15:03
i is hate anyone who is not use vista.

stupid mongs!!!

Windows ME

By Codyp on 27.03.2008 - 18:03
i just like to remind people that if you consider windows vista the next me, then you should get in line to kill yourself. because you are not smart enough to exist in the future. weather or not vista is better or worse than xp. if you make that comparison and you are just starting out as a multicell creature i apologize. other wise dust off that .45

Vista - Linux best friend

By Sheldon on 27.03.2008 - 21:03
i installed vista. softmod crashed (bootloader) paradox stopped working. many driver problems. many hardware problems. installed sp1 on a legit copy, then had driver issues.
i used to have one linux box. i now have four.they run. no viruses. no problems. ubuntu sets up fast.

if windows xp is the past then linux is the future. try it. you'll like it.
