New Kernel for Vista SP1, New Kernel for Windows 7
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 20.3.2008
Microsoft is simply spoiling its users when it comes down to the evolution of the core of the Windows client.
Both the first service pack to the latest Windows operating system available on the market and the next iteration of the Windows platform come with new kernels. Vista SP1 was released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008 and to the general public on March 18. The first taste of Windows 7 was delivered in January 2008 with the Milestone 1 build, while the operating system was confirmed to be under development until 2010. But both Windows releases have something in common, as they each bring to the table a new kernel.
"This is the first time we've ever had a common codebase for Windows that goes all the way from a budget consumer PC right up to a mainframe-class datacenter server. Internally to Microsoft, this makes it easier for us to provide sustained engineering on the product: if we want or need to update a system component, we only have to produce two binaries (x86 and x64) for all languages and product editions. Compare that to the days of Windows XP/2003, when we had maybe 25 different language editions and x86 and x64 variants for both client and server OS releases, and you can see how the testing matrix has become a lot simpler! Externally, the benefit is of course that simply by updating to SP1, you get the benefit of a kernel that has been through an extensive server-hardening process," revealed Tim Sneath Microsoft resident group manager for client platforms.
In terms of the kernel evolution, the next version of Windows, which at this point in time is yet to be a standalone package having to install on top of Vista SP1, will be synonymous with the complete overhauling of the operating system's core. Microsoft has been working since 2007 on stripping down the Windows kernel by removing all dependencies with the rest of the operating system.
The process gave birth to MinWin, which will act as the new heart of Windows 7. Even as early as 2007 MinWin was occupying just 25 MB and runing with 40 MB Ram, according to Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut.

that's the question, but longhorn promised a lot too,but when it got to the
shelves,well...you know that story.
let us hope microshit doesnt screw this
up...again.
best of luck...to us all.

why vista s.ucks, because the kernel uses too much memory, hope windows 7 doesn't make
the same mistake!
if you use vista sp1 is the way to go, run around 20% faster on almost all applications,
recognize all my memory (4 gig)for some reason xp and vista told me i got 3.25 gig of
ram,all the drivers stays with sp1 the only problem is vista loader 2.2 does not work at
all, i will wait a new vista with sp1 included or for xp sp3
your an idiot.. just google 4gb ram limit on x86 os... vista only shows that you have 4gb
installed, goto ctrl-shift-esc and you will see that your total memory aviliable is still
3.25...
vista is the best xp is crap
serious vista means
v- virus
i- intruders
s- spy ware
t- trojans
a- adwares
yes you are dumb ass!
if you want to trash vista, go for it. this is sure the place. but at least do it with
a little intelligence.
vista is a helluva lot more secure than xp.
i made the mistake and install sp1 on my lenovo laptop. it is not faster, at least i
dont see that, but there are many things which go worse: most important for me: battery
life.after installing sp1 it is almost the half of what i had before...
im going to
restore my last image backup.
dont forget, before installing sp1, make a total
backup of ur laptop (acronis true image of ghost)!!!
do not install anything on a lenovo before a complete back up. :p
sp1 will hardly make any difference.vista is a failure, sorry to the guys that rushed
installing them, but that is the truth.your best move would be going back to xp and
waiting for the upcoming "7".rumors have it that they may get published a lot sooner
than announced.this miniwin seems to rock!
using server 2008 x64 rtm is by far the most stable os and around 16% faster than vista
x64 sp1 6001.18000. only use server as worksation on my notebook expensive but worth it if
using pro can make cost up in 3 days consulting.
at skully:
what makes vista more secure than xp? if you add a good anti-viris
and spyware xp rocks. maybe you mean vista features like uac? thank goodness xp doesnt
have that! i think its annoying.
uac is only annoying to those who do not understand how it works.
uac sux asss and im so glad i can disable it before an install with my v-lited image !
sadly uac only annoys those who are really dumb and does not understand how to use there
pc..
i have my kaspersky doing the same and a loooot better than uac. i don't have time to
press aaaall the allow to install just a driver. one thing: vista4experts. the best
program for vista.
