Why installing Vista SP1 might fail via Windows Update

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 20.3.2008

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

vista does not like 3rd party drivers & 3rd party drivers do not like vista. i still use xp pro one two of my 4 computers. there is still a place for xp, that's for sure.

when i downloaded the vista sp1 patch i had to reboot my computer twice to get it back to working order.

Old drivers

so it's only outdated drivers that are having issues... i don't really see how this is a problem, since obviously newer versions of the drivers are out there that do work fine with sp1.

Windows Update

since windows update is supposed to be able to update the hardware drivers, why hasnt it updated these drivers?!?!?!

3rd Party

big duh, yes it can and does at time update hardware drivers, but there are typically optional, and you have to manually select them at the update site. they will not download automatically unless microsoft takes the time to tag them as critical. also, driver updates that microsoft may choose to offer are only the ones microsoft took the time to test, if it's 3rd party, often times the manufactuer of the driver has an update available that's more up to date than the update microsoft chose to offer. big duh.

Old drivers

using a pc that's less than 1 year old and recently upgraded from xp home to vista home ultimate 64-bit and i have the issue "for x64-based computers: alcwdm64.sys - version 6.0.1.6242 or earlier" listed above. unfortunately neither microsoft or realtek have released an updated file to fix this. hopefully they will as i don't really want to go out and buy a replacement sound card.
