The Best Windows Antivirus 2008 Editions
section: common, for your questions: KezNews forum, 13.3.2008
The search for the best antivirus of 2008 has advanced one step further, courtesy of security solution testing lab AV-Test.org. All the best available 2008 security suite editions were thrown against in excess of 1.1 million samples of malicious code on an arena of Windows XP SP2.
At this point in time, with XP SP3 just around the corner, the results released by AV-Test are also valid for the third and final service pack of Windows XP, but not the same is valid for the Windows Vista (plus Service Pack 1) platform.
"A comprehensive review should not only concentrate on detection scores of the on-demand scanner, as this would give a user only a very misleading and limited view of the product's capabilities," explained AV-Test 's Andreas Marx as quoted by Sunbelt Software. "The different detection types have to be taken together to make a valid statement about the whole detection mechanisms: neither static nor proactive detection mechanisms alone can catch all malware."
Essentially, the tests run were designed to evaluate a wide range of the aspects that together build the puzzle of a bulletproof security solution. The antivirus programs had to deal with on-demand detection of malware samples, adware and spyware, but also of rootkits, and even the proactive detection capabilities for unknown malicious code. And on top of this, the analysis took into consideration factors like performance, the volume of false positives generated, response times, and cleaning capabilities.
"It is important to have good heuristics, generic signatures and dynamic detection and prevention in place to be able to handle new unknown malware without any updates. It is crucial to have good response times, to be able to react to new malware, when proactive mechanisms fail to detect them. It is essential to have good static detection rates, to be able to handle already known malware, even before it is executed on a system. So comparing single features makes less sense, as we should think about the fact that a user has not bought an AV product to find some viruses and report them, but he has actually bought a service to keep his system malware-free," Marx added.
The rankings with the best Windows antivirus for this year, considering just the 2008 editions that were tested by AV-Test, and in terms of malware, adware and spyware detection, have WebWasher-GW (with detection rates for malware of 99.85% and for adware and spyware of 99.86%), AVK (G Data) (99.91% - 99.85%), TrustPort (99.63% - 99.82%)and AntiVir (Avira) (99.32% - 99.15%)in the first four positions.
The list continues with the remaining antivirus tested out of the total 30 security solutions. The detection rates for malware, as well as adware and spyware are for Trend Micro 98.72% - 95.14%; Sophos 98.10% - 98.83%; Nod32 (Eset) 97.85% - 96.33%; Microsoft 97.79% - 91.50%; BitDefender 97.77% - 98.77%; Kaspersky 97.17% - 92.02%; Norton (Symantec) 95.70% - 98.62%; Panda 95.62% - 95.57%; McAfee 95.58% - 98.56% etc.
Sophos was quick to celebrate its victory over rivals Symantec and McAffe. "Sophos continues to innovate and improve the techniques used to protect against viruses, Trojans, spyware, adware and other threats. It's particularly gratifying to see Sophos praised for being 'very good' at detecting unknown malware," said Guy Edsall, product manager at Sophos. "Sophos received high scores across the board. Combining these excellent protection capabilities with Sophos's underlying philosophy of simple management has been the driver behind many companies switching from Symantec and McAfee to Sophos."

bitdender is the best!!! barely uses resources.. have been using it since 2005!
good stuffs
uses up so little resources i sometimes forget i'm running it! has caught more viruses
than that bloatware symantec and mcafee.
please get the av right. it is norton which is bloatware, not symantec. symantec
antivirus is one of the best av out there and it also uses up little resource too.
i have been using kaspersky for long. and its best easy on resources and almost nothing
gets by. bitdefender is godd as well.
after getting burned by norton av, i have no trust in anything that comes out of symantec
anymore, so the difference in nomenclature is negligible to me. they cater to corporate
clients while screwing the little guys' system resources.
i have tried almost all av (free or not :-) ), but i use avg free for more than 5 years
without any problem. for a while i have installed avast! (due his 64 bit support; i use
win xp pro x64) but soon after grisoft introduced 64 bit support i have switched back to
avg.
nod32 ruleeezzz, it does not use ay resources from the comp and it is a fast searching
virus protection and protects from everything. i hav been using nod since 2003 and i never
had a virus or something like tht sense then.. and that rules for fock sake :d:p ahahhaha
just to be clear, although the source of these products was similar in the past, for all
intents and purposes they are two different beasts. norton does not receive very good
reviews while the symantec corporate products usually do. if someone had half a brain in
the marketing dept they would have sorted out the naming conventions a long time ago (
unless norton relies on the symantec name for sales and is thus little more than a trojan
horse itself ;) )
ww00tttt once again nod32 performance superb against kaspersky
sombody know were to find webwasher in the net ? . can't find et anywere ?
kaspersky for its low resource usage and complete control over everything!
why there is a discussion on sophos. is sophos that good. got my pc infected with
brontok. it was eset that rescued my pc. i have been using eset since 2005. no problem
since then.
try using symantec's endpoint protection it works really good n u don't notice it. also
includes antispyware, network, and a proactive protection. overall there best suite of
applications
i use ess but i never get viruses or attacks
i like both eset & bitdefender, but kis does its job with lil resources and also protects
garbage on the internet, ads, floating banners etc. avk is also excellent, but it uses a
lil more resources since it uses both kasp. & bit engines. not that i care cause i have
8gb of ddr2 =]
every day another result: good there are compares, my favorite is trend micro 'cause it
acts! :-)
yes..also using endpoint so good so far..far better than nis2008 resource hogger.
as comment above. can't find it either.
ah found it..

trustport is the best - see av-comparatives.org
norton is the worst software
in the world. the only reason that company is still going is because noobs continue to buy
it.
norton the worst one their sometimes i think norton wa made to punish people
i have tested a whole range of av , being a support tech. and kaspersky come up top with
bitdefender second .
the rest very poor . thumbs up to kaspersky , used it for
3 years and has not failed me .
norton it self is a virus
i've read the article and the comments. i think most people miss the point here : why
does windows even need an antivirus ?
if you think about, no other operating system
used today relies on stuff like antiviruses, antispyware or any other anticrap. that's
true of aix, solaris, mac os x, linux, bsd, etc.
so, back to my point : is it really
necessary to test many house cleaning products if you live in a swamp ? it's easier to
move to a healthier neighbourhood.
most reliable av i have found until now. its the best in every way.
norton, macaffee, both blow donkey berries. nod32 is greater, good app, slipped a bit,
and trustport, man, you wanna scan with confidnce, and protect with confidnce, trustport
people, i am telling you. pricey though.
none of this antiviruses are good when it comes to troyans that are registering them as
services...
so the next question is how the hell is that posible ???
wel like
this, when the troyan is executed it simply makes a copy of it self someware on the system
and ads only one registry key, the trick is that it is still not active yet, bt it will be
on the next reboot. so remember regular check for the state of your running services is as
i found out a good practice. :)
i have used different antivirus progs. now i know that kaspersky is the best for some
reasons. check yhe size of kaspersky with other avs like trend micro. not cpmparable!
avira is my favourite. scores highest at av-comparatives test. i would even pay for it if
i did not keep finding "free" keys all the time ;)
