If You Think SP1 Fixed Windows Vista, Think Again
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 13.3.2008
If you think that the first service pack for Windows Vista has managed to fix what was broken with the latest Windows client, think again.
The same problems that were initially associated with the gold version of Vista have survived and moved on as the legacy of SP1. At the end of its first year of availability on the market, Vista had passed the 100 million sold license milestone, and according to Steve Ballmer, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer, present at MIX08 the past week, the platform is the second most popular Windows operating system in the world, despite its long line of problems.
"I'm not saying that there aren't things that customers choose to comment on. Come on, the number one issue we've had customers have issues on were application compatibility and driver compatibility. We made a very concrete set of choices in order to enhance the security, Vista is a very secure system. We've had very little issue of that kind. It's the most secure client operating system out there. But we did have it we did make the choice to kind of hurt compatibility and our customers have let us know that that has been very painful," Ballmer stated.
Still, the promise was that with Windows Vista SP1, Microsoft would soften all the rough edges of the operating system. But just like the gold version of Vista, the RTM build of Vista SP1 experienced integration issues with existent hardware drivers, a detail that led to the postponing of SP1's general availability until mid-March.
"A couple of things have happened, a lot of the apps have now been upgraded to be compatible, and the drivers have been upgraded. We've shipped our first service pack, Service Pack 1, which allows us to factor in a lot of the quality and other suggestions that people have made, and I think we're starting to see more uptake now in the business market, and Vista continues to sell quite strongly in the consumer market," Ballmer added.
But not only is Vista SP1 not resolving the driver incompatibility issues of Vista, but it is introducing new ones. Microsoft warned on March 12, that in certain scenarios, following the deployment of Vista SP1, end users might experience sound problems.
The company enumerated the issues starting with the fact that: "no sound is produced when you play audio files or run programs that have an audio component. The speaker symbol next to the clock in the notification area may display the following message: 'No Audio Output Device is installed.' The Sound Controller in Device Manager displays a yellow exclamation point."
The glitch is entirely the fault of Vista SP1. What the service pack does is to update system files upon installation and inbox device drivers are refreshed in an effort to evolve device reliability. This is done via the redeployment of device drivers at the very end of Vista SP1's installation. But this specific step could fail and result in no new drivers being installed.
Microsoft advices end users to first restart the Windows Vista SP1 machine, then unplug and plug back in the speakers, as well as verifying the default output device. If these steps fail, then users should check to see if the audio device driver exists, and either perform an installation or an update.

everything take time. jealous, selfish people don't
vista is like win me - same colour, same sh1t.gives us hope windows 7 is nearby.
the xp model of os design is long gone over at redmond, washington. not that you can
magically fix a truck load of bugs in an os that has a 10 gig hard drive footprint with a
single 400-800 meg update. too much crap code will always be left from the gold edition,
even if they release 4 services packs!
most secure client my ass. u want secure go linux or osx.
everyone knows why linux is "secure" it's because no one hacks it, same as mac's so
he is correct in stating it's the most secure os, provided you don't turn off the
security features like uac.
"everyone knows why linux is "secure" it's because no one hacks it"
nah,
*nix oses tried and proven secure before windows existed. try and hack a *nix system and
see how far you get and maybe then you may realize your statement is ridiculous.
news source=softpedia=long history of anti vista news articles.
why does this
site continually keep posting this softpedia crap?
you want linux or osx you go goto a linux or osx site with your comments, not here, no
one wants to hear it.
why are you here anyway?
vista is a nightmare. i'll not touch this os. i'll carefully check out windows 7.
and when in windows 7's development cycle will you know if it's any good? don't say
that after vista, anything will be good cuz it's microsoft we're talking here.
"everyone knows why linux is "secure" it's because no one hacks it,"
i
suppose thats why it's on 70% of servers right?
yeah vista is crap, and yes
windows 7 can have a lot less bugs as its being planned to be relativeley lightweight. if
you seriously beleive vista can't be any better then try windows server 2008 and come
back.
just another vista bashing article...
vista is the future. 32 bit system is soon history.
where's service pack 1?its mid march already!
if the problem is more serious in sp1 than i will stay with vista, no sp1 for me. is
there no good engineers in microsoft. or they did not find any product to copy. come on
people you must copy others to survive.gates is the chief software architect, he is that
good to be in that position, should he resign. all the problem started from this chief
architect. he does not know anything about software and customer requirements.
does he uses his on products or not? there are 1000 of bugs in vista. what f**k was those
people thinking. first try your product yourself and sell.
we can easily show why : because m$ forces us to use his crap when we buy a new computer
(i'm mainly thinking of laptops) and also builds with manufacturers "tatooed" computers
that you need to hack its bios in order to install an other os (linux, or older version of
windows). don't say it doesn't exist, i'm writing with a tatooed computer... can't
install linux.
well, i go back to xp again. sound is very important but gaps inbetween etc is pi$$ing me
off. sp1 is doing shiznat, nothing but making a bad os worse.
if you think computers are good - think again...
vista is awesome! get off the rubbish os called xp
look at how may bugs xp has ive lost count and the secuity side of things is a never
ending cycle of patches. vista isnt perfect but neither is xp.
i used vista for over a year , various builds. i discovered that if it smalls like a
t.urd, looks like a t.urd, then its vista! absolutely a bonifide corker.
xp is so
much better.
i will let any guy here screw my butt, it makes me horny as hell.
vista 64-bit owns xp. you need a fast system though not a slow ass job like most people
run..
windows vista's chief architect, brian valentine, now works at amazon.com as a serior
vice president...gotta love that one! learn delphi, then code an os!
drink, smoke, cough, die.
i don't use vista cause i play unreal tournament classic a lot and it runs better in xp
vista sp1 can be much faster as xp you just need the right tweaks to do so,by the way if
you have problems with vista, most of the time the problem you have with third party
drivers and software.
inject your own drivers, problem solved
you all blow nuts
blahblahblah likes it in the ass!
sen. obama is a tard!
goodbye ouchies and grouchies, hello happy feelings!
keebler $ucks anyways, just look at the package "contains 9% jews." the number one
ingredient is asians followed by corn syrup!
