Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 12.3.2008
It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.
Windows Workstation 2008 has all the patches and fixes that are present in Vista SP1; runs all the same software but does it faster. InformationWeek calls Windows Workstation 2008 the “speediest and most secure version of Windows to come along in a decade.”
Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about unnecessary services).
Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008 includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.
A Microsoft employee and third party website have created tutorials on how to use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

i supose if you remove drm it must be faster.
do you have any link to site that shows how configurate win2008 to desktop system?
any links to the os?
also can this though be ran as an os for running my
games,apps and music/movies?
paul
yes, it's faster, but that is not a really new cognition. server 2k3 is faster than xp.
so, i have expected nothing else.
windows xp 50% faster than vista
server 2008 20% faster than vista
= windows xp
at least 30% faster than any vista-kernel based os
i hope that system is better then vista , i bought a new laptop thinking that vista would
run on it fine and not!!! you wopuld think a core 2duo w/ 1 gig ram would run vista well
thnk again i went back to xp ..and that my friend is were the wow is shuve vista ms
you sound exactly like the whiners from 6 years ago.

why did you only get 1gig of ram? 2gigs is stupid
cheap now. there's no reason why you decided to go with 1gig of ram instead. vista
works fine on any computer i've used with 2gigs of ram.
4gig memory is quickly
becoming the standard in computer configs now. with 4gigs being less than $100. there's
no absolutely no excuse to getting a computer with 1gig of ram and expecting to run vista
smoothly.
i agree with the previous post. in this day there really is no reason to not have more
than 1gb of ram. vista runs fine with 2gb or more of memory. you can't expect that with
technology moving forward to stay with 1gb or less and then complain that things don't
work! stop being cheap and spend the few $ to upgrade....
laptop manufacturers who only put 1gb into their systems running vista are just trying to
save a few bucks at the expense of major performance gains. it's hard to believe they
would do this considering how cheap adding an extra gig would be. if you buy a laptop with
1 gig, go straight to the components store and grab another 1 or 2, you will definitely
notice the dif.
they should sell server 2008 as the official os for both home users and companys ... if
it werent so expensive i would def buy this shit
i think that's the whole point of vista business minus hyper-x.
they just
need tweak vista business a bit, and rename it.. and bingo... probably more sales :)
so the vista bios cracks work for server 2008?
wtf is the system using it for guys? performance ??? no xp performs better with less so
justify the memory usage, just dont say get it because vista says so ! vista is a drm
infested hog without all that bullshit 2 gig would be plenty period !
again, you're saying exactly the same thing what people were saying when xp came out.
win98 people said the exact same thing about xp using more memory, and xp being faster.
i mean, seriously, is xp your first operation system? it's been like this
with every single new os release. why would vista be any different?
let me ask
you this? how has drm affected your usage of using vista? i'm still doing the exact
thing things with my media files as i was with xp.
...using more memory, and xp being faster."
sorry, meant ...and win98 being
faster."
to all those saying it is like when xp came out, there is one thing to keep in mind.
if a new os has super high sys requirements, that's ok... as long as there is
something worthy in exchange. xp brought stability that was lacking in 98 (blue screens
every day, reboot every 48 hours, etc). that was needed.
vista brings nothing
worth the extra hardware. a nice skin? integrated search? that's hardly worth the
slowdown.
there are quite a few internal changes to vista that i really appreciate vista.
first off, vista x64 is much much better os than windows xp x64. runs great for me,
drivers and programs pretty much been a non-issue.
1.
vista x64 is
the only microsoft desktop system that supports efi bios. every motherboard manufacturer
will be switching to efi bios within a year or so.
2.
vista x64 is
the only microsoft desktop os that supports booting off a gpt drive larger than 2tb (efi
bios needed). xp "can not" even support gpt drives. which means you can't make a
partition larger than 2tb in xp.
you can only do it with dynamic disks. but
that's ass, because dynamic disks isn't really designed for portable storage.
3.
vista's ui was designed for lcd monitors. the new opentype fonts are
designed to be viewed on lcd monitors. from my own experience. my eyes don't get as
tired looking at a vista screen compared to a defualt xp screen.
4.
vista has a reliability monitor program running in the background. it's awesome program.
you can monitor your computer crashes (i overclock), and monitor what your computer is
doing at that actual moment.
5.
vista sound panel properties is
1000x time better than xp. audio manager is very easy to configure now compared to xp.
6.
vista comes with bitlocker
7.
microsoft
annouced they'll add blu-ray support to vista in the near future.
benefits for
the non-power users:
1. defrag is automatically turned on now. 98% of users
out never defrag their drives. it's good that's it's just enabled now.
2.
parental control. parents can now set time limits on the computer easily.
3.
bitdefender automatically installed. 98% install everything on their computer, at least
bit defender will counter that to a point.
seriously, i've only noticed the
slowdown with vista on systems with less than 2gigs of ram. 2x1 gigs of memory sticks is
only about $40. it's pretty much the cheapest computer part of a system nowadays.
redmodel covered it all *golf clap*, summed-up the benefits of vista with 2+gb ram.
the only thing i'd add is 'media centre', not the component but the support for media
software/remotes that became so easy: powerdvd + mce remote or logitech harmony... a fully
integrated media system from a pc... use you favourite media playing software (other than
vlc player), add a remote and you have dvd, xvid, mp3's, blu ray, whatever... all running
from one remote - can't be beat!
yeah, i know m$ tried that with xp mce 2005, but
seriously the comparison would be unkind to mce 05, i know, i used mce, until something
better came along
loving vista x64 with full 4gb ram support.
