KB940510 highlights some counterfeit Windows installations
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 2.3.2008
Yesterday Microsoft released a new update for Windows Vista via Windows Update - KB940510. This update, when installed, will detect certain software used to bypass Windows product activation.
Here’s how Microsoft describes this latest update:
This update enables Windows Vista to detect activation exploits that bypass product activation and that interfere with usual Windows operation. An exploit is a form of software that replaces or modifies authentic Windows components. When exploits are present on a system, it indicates that a software or hardware vendor may have tampered with genuine Windows to enable the sale of counterfeit software. Therefore, the security and the privacy of the computer are put at risk. After this update is installed, you will know if exploits are present on the system.
And here’s what it does:
When the update is installed, no functionality of your operating system will be affected. If no exploits are detected, the update silently exits. If exploits are detected, you will be provided a link to a Web site that describes how you can remove the exploits. When the exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate your copy of Windows. If you do not want to remove the exploits, Windows may disable the exploits and then ask you to use a valid product key to activate Windows.
Let’s take a look at this update in action. To do that we need a Windows installation that’s cracked by one of the hacks that this new update picks up on - I’ll be using the Paradox OEM BIOS hack.
Then we have to wait for the update to appear … this came in yesterday on some systems but not on others, so it’s a waiting game …
… waiting … waiting …
Ahh! There it is!

vista loader 2 still works after sp1 and this update....at least mine still
is...activated and no warnings...
don't be so happy yet, vista loader will be the next! just wait for that
again ms canada releases an update that screwed up the hda partitions of oem windows of
the company i do tech support to. getting calls saying after an update there vista says
its counterfeit and they are prompted to go to microsoft.com and by a serial lol.
so now we have sp1 installation and this new kb that screws up oem vista!! this patch
is a joke and cannot detect anything correctly at all.
worste part is ms cannot
fix that deactivation
i bet ya,tomorrow there will be a new crack for this thing...like i said about a year
ago, microshit employes what? a million worldwide?,we crack it for free, and we are 500
millions!
top that,microshit,hahaha.
why meddling with vista? switch to linux, preferably ubuntu.
i believe this is just for 32bit? i've been searching for feedback on this update & one
site had ppl who are running x64 and they never got this update. personally, i haven't
gotten it either. had sp1 installed all month and still going. from what i read, this
update was to come first and then sp1 would break the activation in mid march when it's
available to public. but what about those who already have sp1 & are still activated?
lanciao nang, are you hatin or something? lol every single thing on a pc is
hackable/crackable/exploitable etc. :)
if your copy is "pirated" or modified to appear as activated and everything works fine,
why update????
the first thing any soft company does is check your copy if it's
legit through updates.... deuh....
this latest update does nothing. mine came up and said "you may only receive this
warning once." well i haven't seen it again after that and my windows is still
activated. ms cannot disable boot loader or bios cracks.
is very simple....go to automatic update...set before update let me choose....and the
game is over...
i install all the update that i receive but only after that i have
seen what i update on my vista.
vista is a good os but if you do anything it just deactivates. if you change hardware it
deactivates. if you install softwares it deactivates and sometime if you do nothing it
deactivates.
i am using vista sp1 rtm and waiting for it to deactivate.
that update just warns you if you don't have a genuine copy, it doesn't disable
anything.
m$ can check for boot loader. they just reboot and run a script.
this news is ooooold
i posted this on digg like a week ago.
the actual
update apparently does nothing.
ugh, keznews is reaallly behind nowadays, i'm
just gonna stick with digg, engadget and softpedia news.
do not think that this update is the end of the deactivation threat for vista users with
pirated copies. this is the beginning! the update merely warns of the impending doom to
come when the final version of sp1 comes out. after that we'll be nagged to death and
then finally deactivated.
someone has to write a patch that will undo m$ nag
system when sp1 comes out. softmod and even paradox will still work, we will just suffer
nag after nag... so the best defense isnt new hacks, just a way to shutoff the nag screens
and background olor change.
we may ultimately be forced to get this update if future vista patches may be looking for
this update. i have not installed it yet but if it means no future patches then i will
have to download it.
no effect
i tooke the risk installed and bull***
still working and activated i
went to ms site and download from there and nothing.... every thing smooth
bill
failled
hey, i thought microsoft were not allowed to scan/browse files on your haddrive. so by
detecting a crack it has to be looked for!!

i have an hp and loaded using the real hp sticker number. i just got kicked out that it
is not valid. i guess hp is now selling pirate vista as well. yikes!
i agree with some people, if you are running a pirated vista, why risk having to mess
about re-installing or activating just for an update? mine works fine i don't need sp1
surely it's not the end of the world if i don't install it i havent had any complaints
about vista whatsoever since day 1, i don't understand why people are so reliant on sp1
saying without it it's terrible and unuseable and they don't trust it it's all a bit
over the top for me the only thing about sp1 that i heard is useful is speeded up
transfering files- wow, it seems quick anyway
also i dont understand how vista could be less secure than xp if its newer, surely
microsoft would have taken all the security features of xp and more, and brought them to
vista, why would they make an operating system worse?
stfu!
just upgrade to xp and forget vista!!
xp still better than vista
ram 1.5gb ddr 400mzh graphics ati 9500 256mbddr hd ide 7500rpm 80gb vist me at

has anyone noticed sys restore doesnt work after this??
this wouldn't have anything to do with the fine m$ is facing thanx to our lovely miss
kroes, now would it?!
read the whole damn thing. it doesn't deactivate anything. it merely tells you your
vista have been tempered with and will only "repair"(deactivate) it with your consent.
it's for those s.uckers who actually paid for the real license but got scammed
by software/hardware vendor to know that they have been scammed, not for the so-call
"l33t h0x4r" who use scriptkiddie hacks to get around activation.
