YouTube Outage Might Have Been Caused by Pakistan

section: common, for your questions: KezNews forum, 26.2.2008

Pakistani Internet service providers may have inadvertently blocked the popular YouTube Web site across the world at the weekend when they restricted local access to the site, a telecommunications official said.

YouTube said on Monday that many users around the world could not access the site for about two hours because traffic had been routed according to erroneous Internet protocols. The source of the problem was a network in Pakistan, YouTube said in a statement.

Pakistan ordered local Internet service providers to block access to the site because it was running material insulting to Islam, a Pakistani industry official said on Sunday. A government telecommunications official said the initial order to restrict local access might have mistakenly affected users around the world. "The blocking of the Web site within the country might have mistakenly affected its worldwide service, briefly," said the official, who declined to be identified. But there had been no intention to block the site worldwide, he said.

Pakistan, ...what about Google ?

By Andrew on 27.02.2008 - 10:02
people cry foul whenever a third-world government restricts internet access. yet these same people forget that google (the world most popular search engine) regularly applies censorship on the basis that either a website violates the dmca (a us law) or poses a threat to users. in the second instance, only windows users are at risk. this censorship is stupid on its face, yet it is applied to those (like me) who either don't live in the united states or don't use windows.
so richie rivera, when will you stop using google to show us how free you are ?

dumb ass people!!!

By XtremeMaC on 27.02.2008 - 14:02
what's the point of blocking the access from your country if ppl from other countries can see the insulting videos..
what does it prevent? flag the shit as inappropiate and it'll get deleted!

and those who put unwanted videos will always put it unless an action is taken. blocking access doesn't help it!

i'm in turkey and our so democratic where freedom of speech is supposed to exists blocks access to youtube as well.
dumb as politics!!!!

i respect Islam

By Brazil on 01.03.2008 - 00:03
this not true, they blocked youtube because it has videos for other political parties in pakistan, it's a local political issue, nothing has to do with islam, i red everything about islam before, it's a very respected religion with more than one billion muslim around the world, please be polite if you want others to respect your religion

Can't respect it

By Richie Rivera on 02.03.2008 - 07:03
you can't respect islam so long as there exists an entry in the koran suggesting "death to all infidels" it is this that promotes acts of terrorism.

no respect until they change that.

This say it all......
