Microsoft: Vista SP1 RTM Downloads Available, but Not for You!

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 15.2.2008

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Only for MSDN subscriber! Make no mistake about it. The final bits of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 are available for download, but this does not mean that end users can get their grabby hands all over the service pack.

Released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008, alongside Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1's general availability was pushed back all the way to mid-March. The first service pack for the latest Windows client was leaked after the code went gold (even though it was finalized as early as Vista SP1 Release Candidate Refresh 2) and is up for grabs on Torrentwebsites and peer-to-peer file sharing networks to any user with a BitTorrent client. But not directly from Microsoft.

In addition, there are a number of customers that have been permitted full access to Vista SP1 RTM. Responding to negative feedback from both Vista users, Beta testers and partners, Microsoft essentially backpedaled on its initial release dates for the service pack. Mike Nash, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management, underlined the fact that the company has opened up access to the gold Bits of Vista SP1, not only to its OEM partners but also to the participants in the Beta testing process of the service pack. Immediately following RTM, Vista SP1 shipped only to original equipment manufacturers and entered the production stage of the Vista SP1 DVDs. The first OEM computers preloaded with Vista SP1 as well as the media containing the operating system plus the first service pack will hit the shelves in April.

In the meantime, Microsoft also published an ISO image of Vista SP1 to its OEM website, but discontinued the download and pointed to February 22 for the date when the service pack will be served again. This week, the company's Volume Licensing customers will also be getting Vista SP1 RTM, but it appears that they won't be the only ones. "Windows Vista SP1 anticipated to be available to MSDN Subscribers by end of week. We heard you. Look for it in the Top Downloads list by end of week," reads a message from a member of the MSDN Subscription program. Microsoft was planning to drop Vista SP1 to MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers by the end of February.

This only means that if you are a Vista end user, you just got stuck with the short stick after not even been allowed to draw. Outside of the selected Vista SP1 RTM "aristocracy", end users will be able to download the service pack starting in mid-March via Microsoft Update, Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, and in mid-April through Automatic Updates.

Doesn't Matter

By Gordon on 15.02.2008 - 13:02
none of this matters as sp1 is available from torrents newsgroups etc

may as well just release it or is it a ploy by ms to save bandwidth

The customer doesn't come first with arrogant companies

By IronMan on 15.02.2008 - 13:02
vista was not created to benefit the general public. it was created at the request of hollywood to block premium content like blu-ray and hd-dvd. its no surprize that microsoft is still screwing the general public.

2 Reasons Vista even Exists

By Office dweller on 15.02.2008 - 14:02
1 drm
2. company profits

no there really is no number 3. i assure anyone reading this that the general public does not even rate 3rd place for the reason that windows vista exists.

thats right

By lolol on 15.02.2008 - 14:02
yeah, just like ford those bastards. releasing new cars every year, as if the previous ones aren't good enough

OSX and XP do have DRM

By semper_beta_sigma on 15.02.2008 - 15:02
to a lesser extent, sure, but they still have it. apple is getting away with tons of anti-user stuff because they know that as long as microsoft implements the same technologies into windows, they will be blamed for opening their legs to hollywood, etc., and apple will remain the innocent poster child of customer satisfaction. this is the same company that's all shiny and flashy on the outside, but behind the scenes it's a model of inefficiency. case in point, ipods and their hard drives.

at least windows service packs are free.

Hackers: Bill just excited us to crack more microsoft softwares

By Nerd on 15.02.2008 - 15:02
comming up more and stronger than ever. allah is great!

Re: OSX and XP do have DRM

By nick on 15.02.2008 - 15:02
that is correct. but you ought to know that drm started in windows me with the wma codec. apple are no more innocent with their drm implementation. both hoping for 2nd place.

as for service packs, only bug fixes for the beta like released os that no one would buy without fixes being made. you honestly think a service pack is a bonus? if m$ got it right the first time then the service packs probably would not exist. the ol' lock in trick hoping for a fix to make things better. some good points noted.

Thank you Microsoft for bringing us Vista!!

By Vista is Good! on 15.02.2008 - 16:02

RTM question?

By bill on 19.02.2008 - 06:02
nothing on the desktop no number

a quick way to check is mediacentre software version

sp1 is 6.0.6001.18000(longhorn_rtm.080118-1840)

Patience guys......

By The CAT on 19.02.2008 - 17:02
i don't understand why all are in such a rush to install this sp before the official release. if you want to be sure you're getting the real sp and not the rc edition wait for microsoft to release it publically. we've waited all this time, what does it hurt to wait a few more weeks??
