Vijayshinva Karnure, a IIS, ASP and ASP.NET troubleshooter as well as a consultant for developers and system admins of Microsoft India is so cool!

He has published an article on how you, yes, you can turn Microsofts latest Windows Server release into a SUPER FAST workstation complete with Hyper-V (hardware virtualization capabilities). Well he beat me to the punch, and this probably has a lot more merit than the Server 2003 as a Workstation guide that we published here shortly after the release of Server 2008's predecessor, due to the addition of Hyper-V which does not ship -even with Vista Ultimate.

His article begins below.

Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. Due to the nature of my work I always prefer running a Server OS on my main workstation... I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.

So here is my tale of how I went about setting up Windows Server 2008 to look and fell like its desktop counterpart Windows Vista.

1. Enable Hardware Virtualization

My workstation is a x64 machine with hardware virtualization capabilities. This means I can run Hyper-V on my machine. Even if your machine's hardware supports virtualization it is most likely not going to be enabled by default. You have to enable it via your BIOS setup.

2. Install the latest Graphics and Audio drivers

Being a server OS Windows 2008 carries with it basic graphics and audio drivers. To utilize the full strength of your hardware ensure you install the latest drivers for both graphics and audio hardware. Only with the proper graphics drivers will you be able to enable the "Aero" experience on Windows 2008.

Crack Please!

By S.Jobs on 15.02.2008 - 16:02
unlike vista, server 2008 looks like a great os.
i have been using windows 2003 as a workstation os for years and it's better than xp.

please, please please can someone crack 2008!

What's needed.......

By The CAT on 15.02.2008 - 22:02
i agree, a crack of some sort is needed at this juncture. for now run it in vmware or vpc to get warmed up to it. you can use vmware snapshots to make the trial last longer.

Running RC1 for ages...

By who cares on 17.02.2008 - 01:02
im running rc1 as workstation. its great. way better than vista. unfortunately it will expire in 2 months.

sensible subject

By King Tubby on 17.02.2008 - 02:02
why is it "way" better than vista? it's essentially the same codebase, not like the difference between xp and 2003 server. i ran 2008 server for 3 months and just installed vista sp1, which seems pretty much the same (a bit snappier due to being a new install).

Same old crap

By doubter on 19.02.2008 - 11:02
does this super workstation os need super antivirus, antispyware, defragmenter, etc. in other words, does it still need babysitting, contrary to real operating systems like freebsd or solaris ?

Oh...

By dreyfus on 24.02.2008 - 18:02
people... windows server 2003 was different than xp, right but windows server 2008 and windows vista sp1 shares the same kernel and even the build no. are exactly the same. and why on earth will someone use an server os as an workstation... it's insane... check server 2008 and you will se it's even called 'build 6001:service pack1' the same as vista sp1... it's for the 1st time when the workstation shares the same kernel as the server version. so all it's in you head...

Server 2008 for 240 days

By boot.ini on 25.02.2008 - 21:02
in fact you can use windows server 2008 for 240 days. you can reset the activation period of 60 days three times, so you have 4x60 days to 'try' it. you can find a tutorial about how to rearm windows server 2008 at http://win2k8workstation.googlepages.com/index.htm
