Vista SP1 - Day 1
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 7.2.2008
On Monday the 4th of February Microsoft announced that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 had been released to manufacturing.
Although the code has been finalized, Windows Vista users won’t start to get their hands for a few weeks. I’ve been fortunate to be sent the SP1 installer files, along with a complete copy of Vista with SP1 integrated into it. It’s time to fire up a test system and see what happens.
Given the fact that my ZDNet blogging colleague George Ou had some pretty negative experiences with installing SP1 (one machine seems to have eaten a dirt sandwich, which another is ill after having taken a few bites) I demonstrated great restraint in not throwing caution to the wind and installing the update straight onto my main work system. Instead I chose a test system that’s reserved for these kinds of things.
For those interested in such things, here’s the spec of the system:
* Pentium 950D processor (3.4GHz)
* 4GB of RAM
* 250GB Maxtor hard drive
* 32-bit Windows Vista Ultimate
This system scores a 4.5 on the Windows Experience Index. The Windows Vista installation on this system is relatively fresh and the system is very reliable when in use at present. The system in up-to-date on all patches.
Installation
For this first test I decided to apply SP1 to the existing installation - the way that most people will be taking their SP1 pill. I carried out no preparatory work prior to installing SP1 (that would be cheating). The installation was carried out off the CD that I was sent by Microsoft.
I can report that the installation went without a hitch. The process took 52 minutes (from running starting to run the installer to getting back to a usable Windows desktop). The system rebooted five (yes, you read that right, 5) times. source:

big deal! i've tested 3 different builds of sp1 with 32 bit vista. oh it speeds it up
somewhat, but vista still lags when compared to xp pro. i upgraded to xp pro after a year
of poor performance with vista. vista is a memory whore. my programs ran slow with a
quad core intel 4 gigs of ddr2 ram. xp pro was a huge performance boost. my games, all
my applications now run like they're supposed to!
first off, i've never been the first poster so, wicked im well chuffed lol.
i
downloaded sp1, the version which i believe to be the final rtm version. i hope im right.
anyway...
i'm having trouble with my ati 9550 graphics card. it seems there is
an issue with vista and the ati drivers i use for my card. problem is everytime i try to
install sp1 my pissin computer decides to do a reeboot without shutting down (tryed to
install probably 5-6 times). i hope to god ms have resolved this issue in sp1 so i can
enjoy the benefits of this somewhat, in my eyes, a superb os!! fingers crossed!
f**k someone beat me to it lol... oh well.
sorry to flood the boards, let me off this time.
to :: vlad the impaler, i agree
with you on the memory side, i only have 1gb ram and it does steal alot of it when running
a few programs. i also believe that xp pro was a better os as far as performance is
concerned but vista has so much more to offer, dont you think? i've always been one of
these ppl who has to have the latest version of everything and programs i use always
improve with time. give it chance, why not?
regards.
the os was an alpha, here comes the beta build.
sp2 should be up to snuff, like it
took sp2 for xp not to stink.
i did give longhorn/vista a chance. since longhorn i've tested vista/xp pro on a least 4
different hardware configurations, latest being a quad core intel 3.0 ghz, 4 ghz ddr2 ram.
even with direct x 10 games like crysis, & bioshock ran smoother with xp pro using direct
x 9. the real problem is that vista uses wa too much ram & cpu threads, which degrades
performance big time. anything, and i mean anything vista can do i promise you xp pro can
do much better and smoother. vista has no real reason to exist other than to apparently
generate revenue for microsoft. vista is their new cash cow. problem is, other than eye
candy it can't do much. with a good anti-virus and firewall xp can be even more secure
than pooor vista. does uac make vista more secure? or does it cause people to lose their
minds? typically uac is the first thing people turn off. protected mode in ie 7 is a
joke. if enabled this 'new feature' will not let the user download any files from the
internet until disabled and shot in the head. no, i am sticking with xp pro until windows
7 comes along...if its another loser os i'll look at linux or mac.
but vista still lags when compared to xp pro.
vistas way faster on all my
deployments some with hardware 4 year old, you got something wrong other then an os.
samm: i have a degree in computer science and have customer built pcs for 1000's of
clients. i have had hundreds, with old and new hardware beg me to roll them back to xp
pro after using vista...vista is simply slower...applications crash, drivers are
impossible to find, programs that ran fine on xp won't run on vista..this new os is not
backwards compatible with the previos one, its just backwards! due to the above mentioned
reasons...i agree, too many services running allocates too many cpu threads memory
allocation is s t r e a c h e d.
i am one of the few it seems that actually likes vista, and i game with it.
my
system has always ran fast with vista, and the only time i ever seen a bsod was when i had
a bad driver install.
yes, i have tweaked my vista, but i still run full aero,
and i still have superfetch enabled.
i did like xp and always will, but i have
treated vista like it is the only os around because like it or not, we are going to have
to get used to vista sooner or later. microsoft will see to that!
i've been running vista, and all updates available on my laptop since march 07.
dual core, 2 gig ram, 7200rpm sata drive.
i recently switched back to xp, do to an
issue with remote printing. xp is faster, but, i found one thing that vista does better.
the prefetch cache is better (imo)on vista than xp.
i run adobe acrobat & photoshop
daily, firefox with a ton of plugin's, remote desktop & a file manager. the
"quickness" that vista opens programs that you run a lot is lighting faster than in xp.
other than the issue with remote printing (which i'm sure will be worked out by my
vendor eventually) i didn't have any issues with vista.
eventually, we'll all be
"forced" to abandon xp and move to vista, linux, or whatever comes past vista.
i absolutely love vista. it goes long with my black turtleneck and my blue jeans.
all you whiners can keep on whining..for what purpose? no one knows! lol

the driver issue mentioned above is exactly why. the manufacturers got first dibs on sp1
so as to revise their drivers to make them compatible.
here's a tip, when you
first install vista, turn off the indexer service. your performance will jump 25% at
least! but to know how to do that you need to actually know something about windows, as
i'm sure everyone who reads these posts does.

i have some problems with vista like when i play unreal tournament and it pings server
and some servers i don't get a response from, but i know their up cause they always up
and they show up in xp and sometimes the sound is staticy when it loads so i have to exit
game restart and hope sound is ok. this is with firewall disabled and no other security
software loaded either.
if you maximise an application in vista your start bar and application windows change to
black. how depressing.
welcome to vista, an os with a black depressing view.
windows explorer s!cks. the disappearing + signs next to folders, the taskbars
that you can't move or remove the text so only icons are shown, the overdone aero which
makes everything hard to read.
welcome to vista.
the classic ui
theme is the worst interface ever developed. gnome and kde gui's look better despite
being done by 10 year olds!
welcome to vista.
the only time i'm
using vista is for dual boot and choosing "other os" meaning xp.

computer tutor. normally got a crash application/software if install others software even
it compatible with vista. missing "driver auto searching sometime". yarks.. it's just
look better if using a vista fresh with full update only. what the hell if we can't
install others software. otherwise, jz crash you software.

1. open registry editor by typing regedt32 or regedit in start search, then hit enter.
2. navigate to the following registry key:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion
3. in the
right pane, you will see lots of registry subkeys and its value date. here’s how you read
the value for some of the keys.
productname
the product
name of windows vista or windows server 2008 edition on the system. for example, windows
vista (tm) ultimate.
editionid
the edition of the
operating system. for example, ultimate.
buildlabex
contains build and revision number. for example, 6000.16386.x86fre.vista_rtm.061101-2205
where first portion will give the build number (6000) and the next set of number if
revision number (16386).
buildlabex regkey reads: 6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.08118-1840

help!!! it`s killed my bios emulation. what to do now??????????????????????????
i had to go back to my xp install on my dual boot machine because vista still cannot
maintain a steady connection with any of my gaming consoles. i play a video for a max of
10 minutes before the connection is lost. that's just sad. xp handles the streaming
perfectly. also, crysis runs very slow even with all the tweaks and system changes. xp
also runs that game like a dream for me.
sorry, vista, you aren't there yet.

stop asking about sp1... follow the instruction in idiotguy comment. you probably need to
register on the site. but then you can download sp1 on microsoft site follow the
instructions.
its work!!
6001.18000.080118-1840 is the exact name. i even have
a swedish version thats supposed to not work because of the language... but its work and
its swedish! thanks alot!!
anyone having issues with sp1 and paradox, modboot, etc.??????
installing vista sp1 after the download of the 80 mb file, took 30-45 minutes to install,
and i have a 1.73 ghz pentium m notebook with a 512 mb ram, so it makes no sense that this
monster pc took more time :/
anywho, before i installed sp1, i installed the latest
version of vista loader which is 2.2 (so it was activated before i installed sp1), then i
installed it and it's still activated =)
and sp1 works really faster than vista rtm
.. i suggest installing it
god kn0ws, did you get yours off the newsgroup? i have the same, except my buildlabex is
6001.18000.amd64fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840
amd64 for obvious reasons, but the
'fre' means french, correct? looks like english to me. lol
!!!!!sp1 kill paradox crack!!!!!
but for now vista loader 2.2.0 works
great!!!
anyway!!! just upload and tested. its sp1 rtm!!!
