Microsoft junks and replaces Vista kernel in SP1

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 5.2.2008

One of the “big” features discussed in early speculation of Windows Vista SP1 was the kernel upgrade, which was supposed to bring the operating system into line with the Longhorn kernel used in Windows Server 2008.

And yet with Vista SP1 going RTM, there hasn't been so much as a peep from Microsoft about the mooted kernel update. Has it happened?

Well the answer is yes it has, and presumably the main reason for Microsoft’s silence on the subject is that as they’re keen to promote the improvements and enhancements to Vista, rather than placing emphasis on a kernel upgrade, which some people might see as a risk of newly-introduced instability.

The whole thing is still quite interesting. You can tell what build of Windows you’re running by a variety of means:

* if you open a Command Window it will immediately tell you what version you have
* or go Start --> Run --> winver
* or check out the properties of C:\Windows\System32\NTOSKRNL
* or open Regedit and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version.

All these methods will give you an idea of what version and build of Windows you’re running, although the last two give more detailed information.

what a stupid title, microsoft didn't junk anything. do linux users "junk" their kernel every time an updated version comes out? microsoft is just bringing the kernel up to date with server 2008.

i am no fan of vista but the idiotic bashing is getting ridiculous.

Idiot

apologizing for what? i hate vista, but saying they are trashing the kernel for a new one is plain stupid.

so vista in in or out

ok bill face it. vista has failed. when i bought my first windoze box there was no question about the next upgrade. yes i want win95, win98 even better, xp is released and everybody jumps on board and it works. xp gets upgraded with sp2 and shazam it gets even better. now vista come along. sp 1 wait maybe longhorn, no wait lets keep xp sp3.
add to that the fact that explorer 7 & 8 and now windows 7 are in the works for a fast development and deployment. open your eyes fools. microsoft is slipping. their os or r&d has failed them. there was a time where ms set the standard, but now ms is on the sidelines taking a look around trying to figure out how to gain dominance again. can you say yahoo. remember when aol bought netscape. they were searching for a base, a stepping stone to set the trend for the next generation of information technology. ms has lost its way, its vision is blurred. bill come back home.

windows vista is a disaster!

If Linux is SH!TTY as VISTA

By 1 year VISTAR user on 09.02.2008 - 02:02
1) if linux or the linux kernel are anywhere near as stinky sh!tty as vista then all linux users would "junk" the linux in a heartbeat and they would buy the mac/os x or they would steal windows xp.
2) linux developers don't "junk" linux kernel because it works extremely fast and very reliable. linux developers are boasting out loud that they have done work on linux.
3) on other hand, ms software engineers are so shamed to even admit that they worked on the vista operating system.
