Windows Vista: The Facts

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 20.1.2008

When choosing a new operating system, the first thing many people ask is, "What will it help me do?" In answer, much of this site shows you the great experiences Windows Vista helps you have. The second thing many people say is, "Prove that it's better."

In particular, many of you have asked about performance and safety improvements. The following information provides specific proof that Windows Vista is faster and safer.

* The majority of Windows Vista-based PCs boot in less than a minute, which can be an improvement over Windows XP boot times. And the new Windows Vista sleep and resume features can bring your PC to life in a snap—in fact, the vast majority of all Windows Vista-based PCs resume from sleep in less than 6 seconds.
* PCs running Windows Vista that are equipped with 512 MB memory experience a performance boost of up to 40 percent with Windows ReadyBoost. Just plug a USB flash drive into your computer, and Windows Vista will automatically start using it to speed up memory access to important data.

* Out of the box, Windows Vista performs as well, or better, than Windows XP on common home and business tasks.
* Windows Vista users generally experience 20 percent fewer application "hangs" than those running Windows XP
* Superfetch helps your computer adjust to your schedule, so your apps are ready to go before you even launch them. Use Microsoft Outlook every morning? Superfetch will serve it up just in time for breakfast. Play the same game every night? Superfetch gets your computer ready for the next big win. Waiting less means you can do more
* Based on their first 180 days of availability, Windows Vista has been shown to have fewer vulnerabilities than Windows XP or MacOS X 10.4. PCs running it are 60 percent less likely to be infected with viruses, worms, and rootkits than PCs running Windows XP SP2. Windows Vista-based PCs are over 90 percent less likely to be infected than systems running Windows XP without a Service Pack. And the experts agree: "Windows Vista is arguably the most secure closed-source OS available on the market."
* The more people use Windows Vista, the more they like it. So dig in and learn even more about the new features in Windows Vista. Once you've tried it, you'll see

Bulloney!!

By Heywood Jablowme on 21.01.2008 - 02:01
note: source: microsoft.com

this is utter bullshit. vista is noticably slower than xp (on identical hardware). other than people who work for microsoft, nobody thinks vista is better than xp.

Tried It And It Sucked!

By AgentX on 21.01.2008 - 05:01
heywood is right, only microsoft would think vista is better than xp. i tried vista on my desktop (and yes it does meet the recommended as opposed to the required system specs) took forever to install, forever to start, always asking if i meant to do that (uac), etc..

vista lasted about an hour and a half on my computer before i couldn't stand it any more and wiped it off. and there is absolutely no must have features in vista.

p.s. bill gates, if you want to wow me spend more time fixing the bugs, security holes and other issues in windows and less on who's not paying for it.

Well duh

By Booooo on 21.01.2008 - 06:01
"pcs running windows vista that are equipped with 512 mb memory experience a performance boost of up to 40 percent with windows readyboost."

40% of too slow to run at all is what?
vista can't run on 512. even on 1 gb it struggles. this is complete marketing bullshit.

To Vista or not to Vista

By Alex Trusk on 21.01.2008 - 08:01
the technology is advancing and even if you don't like vista you will need to switch to it sooner or later. and by the way, all new things are better than the old ones. no exceptions.

wrong alex

By kj on 21.01.2008 - 09:01
all new things arent better. if i made the newest version of windows it certainly wouldn't turn out better than any of microsfots attempts would it? lol

why don't ya benchmark the two

By Will on 21.01.2008 - 12:01
i run vista on 2gb or ram, pentium d and nvidia 7300gs. it takes 29-40 seconds to boot opposed to xp's 2 mins on same computer. it also starts programs much quicker than xp by around 10-15% and gaming performance, particularly on quake 4 ran at just 40fps on xp and on vista jumped to 70-80 on max detail. my gfx card has been modified by me by modifying its bios etc just in case you don't believe me. unreal tourney 2008 runs smoothly on med at 1280x1024 which is also another reason i don't bother to upgrade the gfx card.

vista uses the ram wisely and if another programs needs the ram it immediatly free's it. thats why you bought the ram right?

Whinney Babies

By Sick of the BS on 21.01.2008 - 14:01
you guys are just boo-hooing with nothing better to do. vista works fine. if you dont like it, cant afford it or the hardware then get out of this forum and go play with the xp babies somewhere else. who asked you anyways. you probably bought cheap ass hardware and pirated vista and know nothing about anything in reguards to computers.it might boot faster if you stop downloading bs! wtf does bush have to do with vista. you probably didnt even vote. go live in iraq for awhile. you might appreciate things better. maybe you should have saddam for a president. see how long you boo-hoo.........about vista!

Mr.Chron = Terrorist

By Jake on 21.01.2008 - 16:01
bush aint that bad. if he was so bad people would have left the us and gone to live elsewhere. look at the stats, thousands migrate to us every year. if you want a real bad leader go live in zimbabwe under mugabe.this bush bagging has become boring, start bagging someone else for a change!
in other news...vista is great for me!

Only morons uses Vista

By Bush III on 21.01.2008 - 16:01
vista is nothing more than an experimental bad beta software release too early

Vi$$ta the facts : all bull s**t

By Steph on 21.01.2008 - 16:01

By bullshitO on 21.01.2008 - 17:01
i have a 3ghz p4 loaded with 4gb ddr400 in dual channel with 4 hhds (1.5tb)

between why do u think they are releasing windows vienna (7) next year lol?? im skeeping vista and waiting.

Vista and Privacy

By rudeman on 21.01.2008 - 18:01
what gets me is the 47 programs in vista that harvest my user data and send it to ms without asking me, paying me for it, or even letting me turn it off.

i don't like corporations spying on me, treating me like a thief when i paid their outrageous prices for software that pretty much now "needs" an internet connection to even run (i bought it to run on my pc not my pc plugged into the internet).

and i don't need or want an application software developer company or the like being "big brother", looking over my shoulder, deciding what i can and can't do. say to me this sounds like they are stealing information from me and my pc.

if there were a shred of decency in some of these outfits, they'd give a call or email and ask to drop by maybe for a coffee and a chat. and i’d be given a choice to say yes or no. not the way it is, so as it is so i see companies that engage in this activity as thieves – because if i cannot opt out then to me it is stealing, pure and simple.

now there are never a shortage of people who will say how the info is used to improve the product blah blah - so that means i can sleep peacefully at night knowing that everything i do with this software is reported to ms, that there they have no commercial interest in reselling certain info or that they acting purely to make my product better and not drag even more money out of my wallet? so the world will be a better place due to this wonderful os. again, don't think so.

and the trouble is i can complain all i want but as long as politicians and corporations don't wake up and see anything wrong with this kinda spying and information theft, nothing will change. is no one else concerned about this?

Vista is CRAP plain and simple

By XP owns the FUTURE on 21.01.2008 - 18:01
i have multiple ms certifications... i gave vista a chance, but it is much slower than xp. converted my new laptop to xp and it's much faster. vista is a pain in the ass, always asking you to take control of files, or if you really want to do what your trying to do. networking vista is a nightmare from hell! xp benchmarks faster than vista on any pc, and it turns out dx10 is bs. the crysis hack proves this. hopefully ms will wise up with win. 7.

My Vista Experience!

By 0102030405 on 21.01.2008 - 19:01
i tried running vista on a pentium 4 at 1.8ghz with ddr1 767mb or ram and i was impressed. with this ancient system vista did very well. the system ran slower than xp but more reliably. i was well overwhelmed in performance on this system by the fact that its fsb is just 333mhz.

Propoganda (partialy true, utterly misleading)

By Jonathan Smith on 21.01.2008 - 20:01
i eliminated a solid portion (but not all) of my file system and network hangs (ok, long pauses) by turning off superfetch. it was the single best thing i did to improve overall performance on my 2gb, 3.0ghz system.

readyboost on 512mb - ok, not recommended if you have enough memory.

boots faster - yes!

resume from sleep mode - was working briefly, stopped working and no fix to be found.

more stable than xp? in general yes, you can run more applications simultaneously in vista and feel confident you won't crash. the unmentioned downside is that many more applications fail in vista - its awful how much time i waste waiting to restart an application that failed again in vista (usually when accessing the file system).

performs better - no! on a good day without numerous file/network timeouts, vista does okay but not better than xp.

fewer vulnerabilities - yes, seems likes it does have better security. fewer trojans, viruses, etc.

you did not mention that vista gobbles up memory (even with superfetch off). i typically sit with 900-1000 mb in use. xp made so much better use of my 2gb. trying running a 3d modeling program or any program that uses more than 1gb of memory on vista - you need 4gb's now - jeez. 1gb min, 2gb recommended, and 4gb for anything serious.

come on, vista is better than xp in various ways but still remains broken and bloated. fix the problems microsoft, make quality as important as security.

wow sad

By jhjgvyfhjnu on 21.01.2008 - 21:01
vista is fine
like it was crap when it came out but its totally fine now
its alought faster and i have never had an error or bsod,
if you have a new computer just get vista like there shouldent be a problem
if you have so much hate towards it switch to mac and be a retard

vista's performance

By zero on 21.01.2008 - 21:01
vista is much better than xp, takes 26 seconds from power on to full use on my system. resources are handled much better than xp, when you first install it, vista will be slow due to indexing, superfetch but after a day or two, you'll see how much better and faster vista is compared to the heap of junk xp.

xp vs vista

By TC on 21.01.2008 - 21:01
i ran xp and vista on a dual boot system for awhile. in my experience xp out performed vista. now i use linux and i dont have any problems.thanks

vista rules

By billy on 21.01.2008 - 21:01
vista boots faster, looks better, is more stable and so on for me.., stop whining about memory and buy some more cuz it doesnt cost shit

Bla, Bla

By RamRod on 22.01.2008 - 00:01
we hear the some old bla, bla crying and wining everytime a new os is released. someone running 98 doesn’t like windows 2000, or xp etc. as a tech my experance is anyone never having a computer before love vista and don’t have any problems with it. as an experanced user i have no issues with vista either but i did have a few small issues with vista 64. consumers need to read the help files, book or bok. rtfm people.

vista on diet

By gaser on 22.01.2008 - 01:01
use vlite and get rid off junk, than your vista will work much faster. at least mine did.

Don't by a Microsoft Parrot

By helpthem on 22.01.2008 - 04:01
yes, don't be a microsoft parrot and endorse vista technology because you want to impress yourself. don't tell everyone to upgrade their old hardware or buy more memory. don't tell everyone their vista problems don't exist. don't assume vista works great because you only use a browser and email and vista works okay for you. don't be a microsoft parrot! squawk, squawk, poly wants impress his grandmother. poly doesn't know squawk about how to evaluate a computer. poly only can repeat and repeat when microsoft says must be true.

poly, are you on the microsoft payroll? if not, shut up.

LETS THINK B4 we TALK PEOPLE....

By Christian Peso on 22.01.2008 - 05:01
u people who dog vista r ridiculous!! talking about loading times and how fast things work. of course windows xp works and boots faster than xp on the same hardware. thats like saying windows 98 boots faster than xp on the same hardware. of course it does!! it is an older os!!! with each new os comes more requirements to push things further i.e. hardware. if vista booted the same speed as vista than their would be no need for better hardware and therefore would stifle the advancement of hardware. we must continue to push forward in technology, not backwards!!! all new os's should require new hardware to run at optimal levels. technology must continue to improve!! lets be real folks!!!

Computers with Pre-installed Vista

By MM on 23.01.2008 - 00:01
new computers that are pre-installed with vista are certainly vista-compatible hardwares but they are still slow in performing simple tasks. we'll see if service pack 1 takes care of the problems in vista.

Vista - video editing/encoding + PVR

By XP lite on 24.01.2008 - 06:01
the name "vista" says it all - mostly looks and panoramic "glass" views.

when it comes to video editing/encoding + pvr functionality, it is dismal in performance + dreaded drm nightmare.
(1.5 gb ram)

to have the same/better performance with vista, need to fork out au$1,500+ on hardware !!!

vista is criminal

By bill on 27.02.2008 - 10:02
criminal
vista violates your rights by allowing government access to all your privet data without notifying you or asking your permission.
this is only possible by an executive order thats still classified.
no one voted it in
no public forum agreed to it
it is immoral and illegal
