Windows 7 debut in 2009? Another reason to skip Vista
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 18.1.2008
If Windows 7 really is scheduled to make an appearance during the second half of 2009, does this mean that making the move to Vista is now a pointless effort?
TG Daily claim to have uncovered a roadmap for Windows 7 whichWindows 7 debut in 2009? Another reason to skip Vista suggests that Windows 7 is being fast-tracked:
Several industry sources have confirmed to TG Daily that a very early version of Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna, already has been shipped to “key partners” as a “Milestone 1? (M1) code drop for validation purposes. A roadmap received by TG Daily indicates that the new operating system will be introduced in the second half of 2009.
While it has generally been believed that Windows 7 was scheduled for a 2010 debut, Microsoft has revised the roadmap and apparently moved up the release date by a few months: A recently distributed roadmap of the OS lists a release to manufacturing in H2 2009. Microsoft declined to comment on this date.
So this presents a dilemma for those who’ve not yet made the switch from XP to Vista. With 7 on the horizon, is it worth the time, effort and money making the switch when chances are that Microsoft will be pushing for another switch in a couple of years? But for those who have made the leap to Vista, these people could be looking at seeing a beta for 7 being available in a year or so.
My best guess here (combined with a little asking around) is that this roadmap is real and that Microsoft is speeding up development on Windows 7. It’s also highly probably that this is down to the fact that some customers have made it clear that they’re happy to stick with XP until the next version is released.
Trying to figure out what customers will want from Windows 7 isn’t easy. Judging by the feedback I’ve been coming across, Windows 7 will need to be faster than Vista, more robust, present the user with fewer compatibility hassles (note that TG Daily claim that Milestone 1 shipped in both x86 and x64 versions - an indication that support for 32-bit will continue) and not hammer system resources as much as Vista does. Oh, and it should be packed with compelling features to make the upgrade worthwhile. That could be a pretty tough call.
But what does this mean for Vista? Well, I’m ready to bet that Windows Ultimate Extras are history. I’d also be surprised if we see an SP2 for Vista before Windows 7 is released, especially if Microsoft is pulling out all the stops for 7. Vista feels more and more like a stop-gap between XP and 7.
What would you want from Windows 7?

another day, another anti-vista article copied from somewhere else. i mean.. i would at
least give this site credit if they came up with their own anti-vista rants.. but it's
not even that good, they just go between softpedia and cnet pages, copying and pasting
anti-vista prophaganda..... it's quite sad actually, and i've noticed other visitors are
getting tired of the same crap all the time and appear to be choosing to not come back
here.
vista is crap
then don't use it. some many say it is crap but you obviously use it or another windows
product otherwise you wouldn't be here.
so annoying when so many people bag
the products yet still use them. if you fell so strongly about it put your money where
your mouth is and buy something else. wonder how long it will be before you complain about
that product.
yeah because using a fast-tracked os is such a good idea...
seriously though, if you
want to compare xp and vista, at least do it on comparible hardware - grab build a pc out
of hardware that came out a year after xp was released and compare that to a vista
computer today.
most people bagging vista now are the same ones that stuck with
win98se for years after xp came out.
i have used vista ultimate for the last year, just switched back to xp pro. i was tired
of the sluggishness and poor performance of vista. i can tell you for certain that xp
runs like a scared turkey compared to the cpu guzzling, memory gulping hog stuck in the
mud vista. my pc is pretty recent, dual core xeons, 3.4, 4 gigs ddr2 ram, 512 mb video
card, wd raptor hd. these people complaining about the negative feedback from vista just
do not want to admit that they made a mistake. i can tell you that the wow started when i
upgraded back to xp. anything vista can do xp can do better faster, more efficiently.
looks like you're copying and pasting from your own posts!
xp is a heap of crap, vista is awesome.
okay i lied vista is cool, im a poor person and cant afford it so thats why i slag vista
all the time, im jealous of those who have vista
vista is a pos. they need to fix the network file sharing and copying data from one
mapped location to another. another reason why major universities are avoiding server 08
and other vista products.
i feel sorry for those people that have a good spec system and can't get vista to play
nice and therefore complain about it being crap! theres plenty of people out there who
find it works just fine. it's true it doesn't run as fast as xp even on a high spec set
up, but it should still run pretty well. maybe you have too much crap installed on your
system.
tips for a successful vista system:-
1. use high end equipment
2.
fresh install
3. install sp1 straight away
4. run a disk defrag.
major uni's would of course not use server 08 because it hasn't been released yet!
makes no sense for a uni to use a product on a mission critical system like that of a uni
that is in beta and will expire after a few months. they may in fact test the os
elsewhere.
changchong ltd, on my rig which is q6600 it runs better than xp in almost all aspects or
any command except for two, copying files through network computers, and copying files
into a usb stick takes a hell longer time, like a rabbit and a turtle compared to xp.
i have not installed sp1, because a lot of people had a problem with installation of
sp1 and uninstalltion, but i always do a fresh install for windows never upgrade which is
one of the most reason why most ms os runs sluggish after an upgrade.
am an it
engineer student, and i've worked on almost every os out there, and for next short period
vista will replace xp in every firm and uni.
linux is very nice, open source
free everyone, but unfortionatly i cant install it for my wife on her laptop to use it for
two major reasons
1. she can never be able to use it since it's meant for pc pro
user
2. the programs she uses in her chemistry studies are only for windows.
mac-os are way behind the market since they are not ready to put their os into
pc buyers to be able to install it just like any product of ms os on any pc out there, if
they do, a lot of software firms will start to develop softwares that are compatable for
macs since the real competition of the market starts by unlimiting mac os to mac pcs only.
if things will stay the way they are today, the future will still remain to ms
windows by all means.
why is the author so sure win7 will be better than vista?
i'd like the interface to be skinnable, have plenty of desktop effects, the os to be
lighter on resources and shutdown/startup quickly.
i cant wait for windows 7 to be released coz you will all say its crap and stick with
vista, just like you did when we chanded to xp from win98. ha ha you guys crack me up ;)
i hear the argument a lot that "when xp was released, it had pretty high system
requirements too." that's still a pretty poor argument - compare vista's recommended
requirements to, say, ubuntu's requirements. vista's is double ubunut's:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/installation/systemrequirements
you really think ms will release windows 7 in 2009? it took then more than 5 years to
release vista... if now they say 2009, you better expect it for 2010 or 2011.
vista is da better os. yous all retarts if u think different!!!
i like my vista...i have 3 vista machines, and only one xp machine left.
hands
down...in processor speed my xp machine wins..but not by much..and truthfully, its when
uac is disabled only.
but i over all like vista more, and networking is soo much
easier.
