Vista SP1 Features the Same Sins as Windows Vista
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 16.1.2008
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 comes with the same sins as Windows Vista. The service pack is not even out the door, and is already putting users at risk.
Microsoft has plugged the first security holes in Vista SP1 as the service pack is still in the Release Candidate Stage. In mid December the Redmond company opened up the testing process of Vista SP1 to all users. And with an install base over 100 million strong, the public Release Candidate for SP1 is quite a popular item among Vista downloads, especially for users looking for a breath of fresh air from the expired Wow.
However, despite the fact that Microsoft has offered an impressive list of security enhancements in the documentation delivered alongside the service pack, Vista SP1 is by no means bulletproof. Moreover, it seems that the service pack comes with some of the same vulnerabilities as the RTM version of Vista. Case in point: a vulnerability in Windows TCP/IP that can allow for remote code execution. On January 8, 2008, Microsoft released security bulletin MS08-001, labeled with a maximum severity rating of Critical, addressing two vulnerabilities in Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) processing.
And it seems that Vista SP1 features the Windows Kernel TCP/IP/IGMPv3 and MLDv2 vulnerability just as Windows Vista. "A security issue has been identified in TCPIP that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer," Microsoft revealed in the description of the Security Update for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC0.
And Windows Vista SP1 RC0 is not the only operating system in beta testing affected by the vulnerability. It seems that Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate 0 is also affected by the flaw, and as such Microsoft has also patched the RC development milestone of its last 32-bit server operating system. well i bet my system well get any faster since i have a quad core machine q6600, 3gb ram,
8800 gt. it runs like thunder, except for the files transfer to usb device is a kill.
the sp1 is going to destroy vista totally with the awefull installation time.
ps: this site is starting to get on my nerves of all the maleware it contains.
im so sick and tired of all this bad shit said about everything. seems like all anybody
can do is bitch and complain like little girls. start looking at the positive before u
lose a regular visitor of the site. something interesting.
^ i agree. at least three quarters of the articles here nowadays are just bitching about
vista. please...we get it!
the news on this site seems the same everyday with slightly different headings.
no one can really be upset that security vulnerabilities are being found in a beta
build of vista sp1. in fact the issue was present in earlier pre-release builds. we should
be glad that microsoft is fixing anything and everything before they launch vista sp1.
especially considering how late it is to really add anything to sp1 as it has been a
release candidate for a while now.
another "vista is bad" atricle.... this site must b run by a few mac fanboys
im a techie/computer guru.
v744 is really good !
it's almost as
good as winxp sp2 :)
i have an intel qx-9650 overclocked to 3.83 ghz, 4gb corsair ddr3 and a asus maximus
extreme. with that hardware, vista runs very well.
the whole site contains malware, you press on this subject, and you will be transfered to
another homepage
yesterday i just came in to the site, didn't press anything
and it moved be into a homepage of adda..
im starting to think about nothing
visiting this site anymore, and you should start thinking about your members not just your
pocket!!!!
come on be nice !
there will always exist secutity flaws, and i must say considering
the size of vista, i'm amazed that not more holes have been found. just have a look at
one single app. as quicktime - look how many security holes have been discovered in that
app. alone (1 is still not patched) and poc exists
amtel
hi all,
first of all: as the article states, vista sp1 is still in testing
phase. installing sp1 is at your own risk. its good that security holes are found while
still in testing phase. if you like to complain, start complaining when sp1 final is
released!!
for all people who experience malware: use firefox with adblock plus
add-on and all your frustrations are gone with the wind!
vista will never match the performance of xp. benchmark test after test has proven
this...and yet stupid people continue to support vista. i don't blame people for being
upset about the lackluster performance of vista. the public were sandbagged by microsoft.
vista has no real reason to even exist people! face the truth. vista needs to be
recalled my microsoft, refunds should be offered. when they missed delivering vista for
christmas i knew it would be a bomb...after years of back peddeling on promises they let
down every pc manufacturer in the world by missing this all important opportunity. i
alpha and beta tested it. i recently 'upgraded' back to win xp pro and finally, the
'wow' restarted! vista sp1 was a huge disapointment. and yes, i know its still beta, but
very close to final code. i will never use vista again. it offers nothing, and i mean
zilch over xp. i guess some people prefer 'eye candy' over real, proven performance.
my pc is not terribly outdated: running 2 single core xeons 3.4 ghz, 4 gigs of ddr 2
ram, 512 mb nvidia card, wd raptor
main drive.
why should i install firefox just inorder to avoid malware when visiting this site? this
site used to be respectfull towards the visitors, but i guess not anymore
apple's program for windows safari-internet browser is close to 10x worse than i.e and
15x worse than firefox when it comes to security according to numerous reports. apple of
course denies them but why listen to them when draging boxes is only possible by clicking
the bottom right corner? it is a complete coppy and paste from mac to windows and of
course it's crap.
i've been reading about best benchmarking vista then xp. ladies, maybe you don't
remember the initial stages of windows xp, when only detractors were there, saying exactly
the same, xp is too slow in my pentium iii with 128 mb of ram en so on... same comes here,
vista has upped the level on our systems for own good and to forget all those stupids
things as pentium 4, pentium d and pentium dual-core, and olds video cards such as 5200
series and so on... in instance, get a better pc!
"inorder to avoid malware" period.
:d
i in fact alpha tested longhorn, then vista right up until the recent sp1. vista is a cpu
guzzling, memory hungry hog. plain and simple. it offers nothing performance wise over xp
professional. microsoft touts that it has better security because of features like user
account control. i personally do not like being tortured with a yes or no question every
single time i try and do something on my system. its silly and a bad idea, uac was a
rejected, recycled feature that was left out of windows 2000, testers hated it, so they
removed it. with a good anti spyware, anitvirus installed xp is just as safe and secure. i
recently switched back to xp pro, and i can tell you the wow really did start now! xp runs
circles around vista. i can guarantee anyone reading this that benchmark test after test
proves that xp outperforms vista. vista really is just eyecandy. xp can do anything vista
can do better, using more efficient memory handling, and less cpu cycles. my pc is not
really outdated, 2 single core xeons, 3.4 ghz, 4 gigs of ddr2 ram, 512 mb nvidia card, wd
raptor hard drive. i just got tired of menu options hidden hidden under layer after layer
of useless garbage. i do not like my os telling me i do not have sufficient priveledges to
accomplish a task either. plus, vista has digital rights management software watching
every move you make. its choked full of microsoft spyware. they call it 'safe computing'
when they spy on you. microsoft trusts you because you are being watched via their
spyware. microsoft made a deal with hollywood to take their copyrights off the dvd and put
it right in your os. this also slows vista down because video/audio has to be filtered so
much, coded, unencoded back and forth. yes, xp has drm, but nothing like vista. again, i
switched back to xp and it is a breath of fresh air. i will try windows 7. microsoft has
lost respect for the general public to release an os like vista. but then vista was not
designed for the public user, it was created for corporate america to protect
'intellectual property'. this is a fact people. anything, and i mean anything vista can
do xp can do it better! research everything i am telling you and make up your own minds.
fair enough? don't be fooled again!
kez is doing a fine job and unless you dont like it go visit ms site and read their daily
news.plus if you dont want to put firefox then bear with the ads and support the site you
visit so regularly - like it seems you do.
amh quit biching use an ad blocker or web page filter program like proxomitron
there's a big problem here with people saying things about vista running good, when one
of them has a qx9650 oc'ed.
that's just plain biased.
i'm viewing that from
the view of some noob visiting.
now, my opinion: i have a 1gb ram, core duo 1.73ghz,
gma 950 working fine, and stable, no crashes.... etc.
my current system, though, is a
4gb ram, core 2 duo 2.4ghz, 7900gs. not the best, and it runs vista fine too.
hi!
i have never had any problems at all with vista. i just read about people having
problems with it. i started with win 98 and have followed windows upgrades since then. and
i must say that vista have never ever caused me any problems at all. maby the fact is that
i've bought new hardware that was manufactured after vista and because of that vista
works...
vistaboy
i am not biching, all am saying is that this site used to be respectfull, now full of
malware. i dont use any ad blocker cause i avoid the sites that consists of malware, but
this site used to be one of the best about windows news and cracks etc, etc.. now its
going down the drain.
shut up matte! no one and i mean no one would miss your sorry ass anyway. what is, just
is. deal with it: many people are disatified with vista. its a big memory hungry cpu
chugging hog...i refuse to buy new hardware when it does absolutely nothing more than xp
did! nothing
if you only use your computer for basic tasks, then of course vista won't offer you
anything new. time and time again, people make ignorant comments on how appalled they are
that vista runs slower on older hardware...of course it does! what did you expect? i'd
like those same people to try running xp on a computer that was built in 1997 and then
come back and talk about performance issues.
with all due respect, old timer, i
take issue with almost every sentence you wrote. i hope you're not as paranoid as you
come across, because vista drm does not phone home with a list of pirated movie titles
that are watched on the computer. video being coded/decoded back and forth? come on! you
obviously don't know how the drm filter works, but i won't bother preaching about it to
you.
on top of all that, do any of you honestly believe windows 7 is gonna have
fewer "evil" drm features? i wouldn't bet on there being fewer but at least just as
many. and don't bother hoping the xp interface will return in windows 7 because microsoft
changed it for a reason.
i'm sure ticking users off was not the intention, but
then again is it asking too much of people to learn how to use the computer on which they
spent hundreds/thousands of dollars?
all those people running pirated versions
of vista have long since figured out how to circumvent all that music and movie copyright
infringement beaurocracy.
yoyoma: son you don't know jack. with drm microsoft has attempted to plug the infamous
analog hole as much as is possible by forcing all data through encryption algorithms. for
those unaware of the costs of encryption it is sufficiently high. pushing hd audio and
video content through encryption decryption routines is a tremendous strain on any system
currently available and in the near future. even with the application of moore's law a
conservative estimate could place affordable and usable systems within this new content
system 5 years away. btw, i run hundreds of programs on my pc, and i can tell you that
vista will never be as efficient as xp. next time think before you shoot off your mouth
to your betters.
