New Vista SP1 test build public
section: download, for your questions: KezNews forum, 12.1.2008
After saying it planned to make its latest test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 available to a private group of testers only, Microsoft has done an about-face and made the code available to the public.
Late in the day on January 11, Microsoft posted the new Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC) code – which it rolled out a couple of days ago on its password-protected Web site — to the Microsoft Downloads site.
Microsoft released the newest update of its Vista SP1 RC build on January 9. At that time, Microsoft made sure to note that the build was not available for public download.
According to a company spokeswoman, the build includes “a number of bugs that testers encountered in previous pre-release versions of SP1.” She declined to be more specific.
On the Microsoft Downloads site, the company notes that “systems running on Windows Vista RTM typically require two or three updates before SP1 can be installed. These updates are permanent on your Windows Vista systems.” Two of the updates “service specific Windows components prior to the installation of the service pack and a third update which services the installation software built into Windows Vista.”
The three prerequisites, according to Microsoft:
* KB935509 This updates is only required on Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate editions (which have Bitlocker capabilities).
* KB938371 This update consists of fixes for several components (including the TrustedInstaller), increases the success rate for installing the service pack and enables the service pack to be uninstalled successfully.
* KB937287 This is an update to the “Servicing Stack” or the Windows Vista component installer technologies built into Windows Vista.
Unlike the case when it released previous Vista SP1 builds, Microsoft did not release simultaneously a new build of Windows XP SP3, the spokeswoman confirmed.
Microsoft confirmed this week that Vista SP1 is still tracking toward first quarter 2008 availability. (February is the target month, my sources say.) Windows XP SP3 is due in the first half of 2008, according to the company.
(Thanks to Winbeta.org for a heads-up on availability of the public Vista SP1 RC download.)
Update: Here’s Microsoft’s statement, relayed after I posted on Friday, about the SP1 Release Candidate buil:
“In the interest of gaining additional tester feedback, on Thursday, we made the Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh available via Windows Update to interested beta testers on the public TechNet site. We are still on schedule to deliver SP1 RTM in Q1 CY08. The final release date is based on quality, so we will continue to track customer and partner feedback from the beta program before setting a final date.”

so far the only differnece i have found is that it
adds 700mb to my image backup.
no speed or other differneces found whatsoever.
looks to be a complete waste of time to the average user.
this sp for vista better be good!!! the future of vista rests upon it. if users start the
upgrade process and report that it hasn't imporoved performance or fixed bugs vista is
doa. the corporate world will not accept vista if these issues aren't resolved....

hey, i just wanted to ask, if it still will work with the oem bios? i'm a little afraid
that my windows could be fugggged after having installed sp1. thanks in advance.
ps is there already a noteable change for notebooks? or is this something that
hasn't changed yet?
well ran the latest build and the oem work around still functions fine.
as to
rdp the v668 build would not return from an rdp seesion (as host) properly and required
that i reboot from within the rdp session to work locally again.. with the latest this
seems to be resolved thus saving me a whack of time as i use rdp to my main quite a bit..
can't install this eventhough i a have legit copy of vista ultimate. interesting to see
how window update is hammering me with req to update... sp1 aborts after 10% and restores
the previous version...
can't get this to install - could not find the disk after reboot. fresh install of
vista ult and tried again before installing any apps and the install failed at 23% - at
least i'm still running.
all i wanted was ultimate and after i bough it, ms said the reg # is fake!~ beware buying
from staples, best buy, and comp usa, sales folk are taking out the validation that is
correct and replacing them with fakes
no were not, were replacing them with old used codes.
the last time i tried a sp1 all i got was loss of control panel and my printers simply
did not work even though the drivers were fine as i found when i uninstalled the sp1. does
anyone who tried this one had problems opening the control panel or lost any other devices
including their printers?
i've had the same problem. printer doesn't ext. just is not worth installing.
the windows team stepped up a gear and have released sp1 rc (release candidate) refresh 2
today. in the past this probably would of been called rc3.
microsoft said this
release would reach just 15,000 official beta testers who can download it through windows
update or as a stand alone file. as with previous builds, the service pack requires an rtm
version of vista without earlier sp1 updates applied.
service pack 1 is
expected to be made available in the middle of next month.
