Windows Vista Simply Can't Catch a Break – Maybe with SP1

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 14.12.2007

At over one year since Windows Vista was released to manufacturing and after it shipped to businesses in November 2006, and at almost 12 months since the operating system hit the shelves, it simply cannot catch a break.

The last statistics related to the market performance of the latest Windows client to come out of Redmond pointed to in excess of 88 million licenses shipped to the company's channel partners. At the same time, data published by market metrics firm Net Applications points to the fact that Vista is right on track to hit the 10% market share/100 million copies by the end of 2007. Still, with the sole exception of Microsoft, the general perception is that Vista's uptake in the corporate environment is suffering drastically.

Businesses are notably slow at adopting new technology, and as Vista requires a healthy underlying infrastructure, companies generally synchronized migration to the new software with their next hardware upgrade. At the same time, the first service pack for Vista is regarded as a sign of maturity, and there are examples of large corporations, such as Intel and Dell that have postponed jumping to Vista well after SP1. While Microsoft gave strong indications that it was in fact selling Vista in the corporate environment, independent studies come to illustrate the contrary, revealing that although the adoption of the operating system will pick up in the coming year, the rate of uptake will still be low.

"That's been a disappointment. Our customer surveys tell us customers are adopting at a slower rate than we -- or anyone else -- thought. Even those that have licenses and can move quickly are not. Our CIO has been using Vista now for a long time. His comment is that it would take three or four hours for every user to learn Vista. He thinks it will be a big investment. For end user customers, the investment is not just in teaching Vista, but in new hardware to go along with it. It will continue to be adopted, but it's a slower base than anyone thought it would be a couple years ago", revealed John Edwardson, chairman and CEO of CDW, as cited by Channel Web.

In this context, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will be a turning point for the operating system. Microsoft has just made available a public version of Vista SP1 RC1, but has failed to deliver an accurate deadline for the delivery of the refresh. And most of all, the Redmond company has constantly downplayed the relevance of SP1, gearing users directly to Vista or to Windows Update. In this regard, Microsoft has managed to create the perception that SP1 will not turn a new page for Vista.

Windows Vista

windows vista rip!!!

here's an idea!

By ripee on 15.12.2007 - 03:12
most tv shows and movies blatantly advertise apple computers through product placement whenever an actor is using a laptop.

but the few shows/movies where windows is obviously displayed on the screen, it's always xp. why doesn't microsoft just get screenshots of vista put on the prop monitors? sure would make vista seem at least relatively more mainstream and usable in everyday computing more so than what a lot of people think.

chew on that lol

agreed..

By cswimbound on 15.12.2007 - 07:12
i agree with you on that comment...but to be honest ive never seen a movie yet that has windows on it...its always a mac

disagree to agreed ...

By Hey on 15.12.2007 - 07:12
well, what you see often is a skinned windows version. it's in the movies you just dont see it directly. but ok, majority obviously use linux and of course mac

Windows in Anime

By .Vision on 15.12.2007 - 08:12
i saw windows in the anime full metal panic

w00t?

By b3g2d1fr on 15.12.2007 - 13:12
no way!!

what you see is apple placing thier logo everywhere, especially laptops (with the glowing apple in plain view.

windows desktop shots are much more frequent than appple, its just that we're used to it and sowe don't pickup on it.

i'd say the ratio is 3:1 - ms over apple in multimedia.

Vista = Proof of Microsoft's lack of respect for customers!

By Maria on 15.12.2007 - 14:12
vista users, get over it!!!
you're all guinea pigs on a microsoft's big experiment.

Without a doubt! You're right!

By Jonas on 15.12.2007 - 14:12
god, this is even the first time i've ever heard of reliability, stability and performance packs for any operating system...

as of today, i am resigning as keznews moderator.

i like keznews forum but there are many reasons and facts that make me want out as moderator.

with all that occured lately, i'm getting tired of making any effort for someone who does not care at all about keznews.

last sunday, the forum was almost destroyed until kez restore a backup and post this:

i restore the forum database from backup, temporary remove all moderators and ban odeeee.

i was not here in last few days, because i was not online..

but now i will be here more often. and i am preparing several changes..
here is the first fact kez lie about ... he mention not being there last few days but in fact he has not been there at all for more than 1 month.

on the same night me and ecko did discuss and take the decision to pm kez and request him to do changes and keep his promises.

we did request him this:

point needing to be changed:
- communicate with your moderator much more than ignoring them
- reply to your pm instead of ignoring them
- being much more active
- give moderator more power to deal with the behavior of person like odeeee
- restrick/ban post mods
- remove all of a users post or just move them.
- be mature and take decision for the forum (new moderator like uxrr6 !!!!)
- stop lying and be honest
- make changes - install phpbb3 as soon as possible

i did resent the same pm 3 times since sunday ... he did receive the first 2 pm but he did not got the latest 2 ... meaning he has not been online on keznews at all for close to 72 hours... for someone saying he would be more active how do you call that...

he did stop registration on monday and so far he did not try to find any solution.

so when someone does not care about keznews, do you feel like making any effort for him ? answer his simple, no

so i will move on and start being more active on another place where someone make me admin of. i won't tell the place publicly on keznews but if people did enjoy the work i made on keznews and want to join a place where the admin will care about the needs of the members or if you just want to keep contact with me, you just have to pm me telling me what you want to know and i will answer you the best i can.

obviously you'd never used a mac before. in mac, apple also post reliability, stability and performance packs in their system update.

oh wait... linux has these update too... or just about every os in the market also has these updates as well.

By logo sticker or not on 15.12.2007 - 19:12
regardless if it's a logo sticker or an actual computer being used, product placement isn't meant to be subtle. people who watch actively notice these differences.

the best example i can give you is in the us version of the sitcom the office, where all the computers used in that workplace are so obviously running xp. it's that much more significant since all those computers are real ones used by the actors to blog.

To Samic...
