How to activate Windows 7 RC build 7600, 7264, 7231 and olders

Does Microsoft Actually Want Windows Vista SP1 to Be Pirated?

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is currently in its final stages of development in Redmond Utero, and heading for the first release candidate stage.

Microsoft has even managed to promise that the general public would be able to get a taste of the service pack ahead of the first quarter of 2008, pointing to mid of December 2007, as the date of availability for a public build of Vista SP1 RC. At the same time, the Redmond company began discussing the modifications that the service pack would introduce in the activation infrastructure of the operating system. In this sense, Microsoft mentioned that it was evolving its anti-piracy strategy, in order to meet the ongoing threat posed by the phenomenon.

Vista was made available in November 2006 and in January 2007, first to business customers and subsequently to the general public, bringing with it a new level of anti-piracy mitigations, such as Activation 2.0 and the Reduced Functionality Mode. Now, after a year since the operating system has been released to manufacturing, and just two months short of the celebration of the first month on the shelves, Microsoft claims that the piracy rate for Vista is half that of Windows XP. And at the same time, the Redmond company is making the illogical move of disabling Reduced Functionality Mode starting with the first service pack for the platform.

"We want to ensure that through this program, we maintain a great customer experience, and to do so, we will go after pirates and counterfeit software in a way that minimizes any disruption to our genuine customers. We are committed to transparently communicate how the program operates so that our customers and all interested parties clearly understand what’s happening and why. We understand the importance of protecting user privacy and conduct the program in accordance with a clear privacy policy. We are committed to delivering WGA with accuracy by making it a priority in identifying counterfeit software and striving to meet the high standards customers and partners expect of Microsoft," revealed Mike Sievert, Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Marketing.

Pirated copies of Windows Vista Service Pack 1, detected as non-genuine after failing the Windows Genuine Advantage validation, will deliver the same behavior as pirated copies of Windows XP. Namely, the users will be served "clear and recurring notices", informing them of the fact that Vista SP1 is non-genuine, but without any loss of access to features or of the functionality of the operating system. Net Applications credits Vista with over 9% of the operating system market, while Microsoft is boasting about having shipped in excess of 88 million copies of the platform to its channel partner. But, how desperate can Microsoft be to grow Vista's market share, if it will let its antipiracy guard down? And while we are on the same note... How can the Redmond company call the moving back to the "relaxed" antipiracy model of Windows XP, from that more strict in Vista, an evolution?

"Finally, we are committed to providing great customer service and support. For those systems identified as non-genuine, we will provide resources to help individuals acquire genuine Windows Vista. These principles will continue to serve as the bar we measure ourselves against in evaluating our anti-piracy efforts and how these efforts evolve over time to meet the continued threat of piracy," Sievert added.

Vista piracy rate

By Lara on 07.12.2007 - 00:12
"microsoft claims that the piracy rate for vista is half that of windows xp."

hahaha, i believe that ;)
we don't want vista even for free...

Flawed logic

By Paul on 07.12.2007 - 03:12
"but, how desperate can microsoft be to grow vista's market share, if it will let its antipiracy guard down?"

don't think they're desperate at all. msft knows that vista's activation requirements are putting a lid on corporate keys going awol (50% pirate reductions over xp). that leaves the remaining major vector being the two bios hacks. sp1 reportedly kills both. ergo, get sp1 out there and pirate machines stop working properly. of course, the pirates will break it in about one week and come up with another hack. msft knows that too. they're simply hoping some will get legit and trying to keep the pressure up on the others.

Just a PR move to get everyone to jump onto the slow bandwagon...

By CyBeRjUnKiE on 07.12.2007 - 03:12
yes it's true, piracy for vista is half of that of windows xp....of course...majority of people doesn't want to use such a resource hungry os, so i would agree with their statement. perhaps if it were a much faster os, everyone will use a pirated version. as for the move by ms to reduce it's antipiracy software in vista...this is to entice everyone who doesn't want to use this crappy os to jump onto the band wagon. just my 2 cents...

Why relax the rules for antipirated copies of Vista??

By Vistafied on 07.12.2007 - 09:12
answr to get the people running pirated copies and to buy a legit key as well as they know the that the hackers will beat them so now they will offer discounted prices to those who run pirated copies makes perfect business since to me.
i upgradet to vista ultimate 64 a long time ago for 145.00 dollars why run pirated when you can be legit for only 145.00?? just my thoughts.

Vista in trashcan and installed XP again

By Mike B on 07.12.2007 - 09:12
i bought a dell laptop for my wife with vista on it. i have never seen such a slow os in my life. i think vista sp1 had to be the originally launch date for vista, because what you buy now is full of bugs. and when the support stops of xp, i'll go to ubuntu, i don't pay money to them again.

Vista is great but way too expensive to buy

By GetItFree on 07.12.2007 - 09:12
i have vista running on 3 pc's here, and i like it a lot better than xp. it install's in no time and no bsod's for the whole last year.

as i also have a laptop which came with a preinstalled vista, i really do not feel like paying another 450 euro's for another 3 oem vista versions for the pc's.

if you buy the retail package it will be over 1000 euro's just for vista on the 3 pc's. no way, all hail piracy and i sure hope there will be a crack soon for sp1 once it comes out.

Crap...

By sjc1963 on 07.12.2007 - 10:12
as some on here have stated, maybe the reason why it isn't pirated as much as xp is the same reason why osx hardly has any viruses for it? hardly anyone is using it.

m$ is being misleading. its the same as the claim that fewer people in iraq have been killed recently, and thus the so-called "surge" is a success. what they don't tell you is that there are fewer people left to kill.....

its all politics and greed

By swandike on 07.12.2007 - 12:12
jobs like i always say is being silly, the more hard it is for hackers to deal with os, the less popular.

if i was os maker, i will make money from companies and pc bundles, not poor people like us. we havent got 200 quid for just an os full of bugs

Vista is too fat and too slow

By Alfa on 07.12.2007 - 16:12
i had vista on my pc.it was too fat en too sloww to work smootly. uninstalled en again windows xp much faster and better..
unfortunately for vista, there is no chance more to succeed.. maybe windows 7?

newbies use XP, nerds use Vista...

By ViciousVic on 07.12.2007 - 19:12
because nerds know how to tweak vista. the problem is microsoft tries to pack to much software on vista. i used vlite to strip out all the bs vista software that 99% of users dont need and it bechmarks better than xp. microsoft should stick just to the os and quit trying to add all this crap software that most people will nerver use.

Dell OEM

By Esko0820 on 07.12.2007 - 19:12
i bought a dell pc that had home premium installed but i got a hold of the dell ultimate oem that successfully installed with an oem key that is authentic but i actually didnt pay for ultimate, so do you guys think the sp1 will lock my computer to certain limits or do u think it will accept the old genuine oem serial?????? hopeing for the best...

freee vista

By poohead on 07.12.2007 - 20:12
i have to admit as a pirate i can get my hands on practically all the software i want for free, so in my eyes m$ are effectively giving vista away, ti me this on par with having freee distros of linux 3 clciks away, the fact is even with m$ giving vista away i still dont want it. which in my opinion is either impressive on the open source front or simply embarrasing on microsofts part...

Vista OEM SP1 Worries

By Dondee on 08.12.2007 - 03:12
telling esko0820 that he has, for all proctical purposes, no reason to be worrried may not completely allay his fears. as it stands, there is no way that sp1 can determine that home premium came with his computer. sp1 may kill emulation cracks but it is not going to be able to determine that someone has upgraded to ultimate illegally on an oem machine.(at least under the circumstances stated.)

Vista bloat?

By SC on 09.12.2007 - 15:12
vista comes with ao much crap, it's unreal. grab a copy of vlite and cut it down to size....

btw, sp1 disables oem hacks? no big. i have more faith in groups/people like clony and paradox than i do in ms.

YaaaaRR mi harteys

By dRaC on 11.12.2007 - 16:12
i hate to say it but i also have had bad experiences with windows vista, i find it to be extremely slow and yes very buggy, driver support for my hardware has been worse than in linux and windows xp.

windows vista should of had a more customisable installer, why cant they just have options to install a extremely lightweight cut down version?, why do we have to be pushed into there version of a os everytime.

i beleive we should be given the option to add what we need from the new os developments as selectable modules instead of needing to search for tools and or hack through service entries and regfiles :/ .

in time i beleive the hackers will release a full patched, optimised, better compilation of vista than microsoft do, like they did with xp turbo and xp blackedition etc.

XP Turbo & Black

By Phil Hernandez on 15.12.2007 - 02:12
where do i get a copy of that xp turbo or black edition??

windows vista

By f**k microsoft on 24.12.2007 - 12:12
all i can say to all of you is dont bye this load of shit its to expensive for what it is , its not worth the money microsoft are ripping us all off its the worst o/s yet and i dont give a shit about the damm thing and all those genuine people that have brought it should go in there o/s boxes and take the disc out and smash it then shit on it.

Hahahaha! Microsoft is such an IDIOT!

By tywlis on 25.12.2007 - 06:12
microsoft doesn't know how clever hackers are! the only thing i can say is to sell their genuine o/s same as those which is pirated. or even lower to the pirated one for them to win such competition!

Microsoft=over

nag screens

By Your name (nick): on 27.12.2007 - 22:12
so m$ is just going to be nagging ppl with pirated copies to pay? please pay.. i mean if you want to? i dont know very much about programming/reverse engineering but wont that make it a hell of a lot easier for scene groups? all they would have to do would be get rid of the visual pop ups and just tweak a bit. the vista updates can be downloaded from m$ if you run a genuine copy of xp!! how crazy is that!!

LOSERSSSSS

By HA HA on 28.12.2007 - 06:12
live in s.e asia...u need not 2 buy nything...everything comes free .hacks n cracks all ...no need 2 buy vista sp1!!

Needs to be pirated

By Your name (nick): on 30.12.2007 - 16:12
microsoft need it to be pirated!! all the hard work and money spent on vista and no 1 wants it. i hate ms for bringing out crappy dx10, bought a card that supports it and then theres talk about dx10.1 which wont be compatible with my new card. wankers. think il stay with xp and dx9.

heres how it's pirateted

By clony on 06.01.2008 - 15:01
the official download site for the one-click activation site has just been launched! timestop. net.tf

who wrote this article?

By yoyoma on 13.01.2008 - 07:01
is the writer actually getting paid to write this drivel?

of course microsoft is open to vista sp1 being pirated! they even said they'd rather people pirate their products. as for all the beta builds of sp1, no matter if they were for intended for private beta testers or the public, microsoft knew darn well that each and every build would make it to a bittorrent site within 6 hours after its release.

and all you all will only need to re-arm it once when sp1 breaks the most popular vista cracks before a new set of cracks emerges.
