Want to talk performance in a comparison between Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3?

Well, let's talk performance! The Devil Mountain Software company, via the exo blog have recently made available the statistics generated following a series of benchmarking tests, featuring Vista SP1 Release Candidate Preview and XP SP3 Release Candidate. The conclusions were that XP SP3 leaves Vista SP1 in the dust in terms of performance. Although it is a tad early to draw the line on the performances of both service packs since the releases are still in RC stage, the conclusions presented pointed to the fact that XP SP3 is twice as fast

While Vista SP1 and XP SP3 had been thrown one against the other in the same arena, there was little information provided on the actual parameters of the benchmarking tests beyond the system configuration of the machine used: "Dell XPS M1710 test bed with 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM and discrete nVidia GeForce Go 7900GS video," according to the Devil Mountain Software company.

"So did they turn off things like the pre-loading of applications, was this a fresh PC or one where the inbuilt tools could optimise themselves? Did they turn off new features like anti-spyware and search engine, the graphics etc? You can't add a bundle of new features and get it all for free - they have to load and boot up time is the most likely time," explained David Overton, Microsoft Small Business Specialist.

Now on his blog, Overton does mention the fact that the opinion expressed are his own, and not Micrsoft's. But it's likely that the Redmond company was sharing his frustration. Next, Overton addressed the system configuration, with a particular focus on RAM. The emphasis is that of Overton.

The tests involved "a Vista machine with the recommended MINIMUM amount of RAM, but XP with eight times it's minimum recommended. Microsoft clearly recognised that Vista's new features require more memory, as do Office, so they have one machine that is 5 years skinny on features and another that has 5 years worth of extra features and security built in. Come on. What about trying it on a 2GB machine, or one that the tests have been run on a hundred times so the optimisation engines in Vista can get to work. I've done benchmarking as a job

The fact of the matter is that the Devil Mountain Software company did run the test with 2 GB of system memory instead of 1 GB, and Vista SP1 still underperformed in comparison with XP SP3. And it is true that Windows XP, released at the end of 2001 would fly on 1 GB of RAM when it's minimum system requirements demand drastically less resources. Yet, by the same approach, we should in fact forget about the fact that Vista is guaranteed to run with just 1 GB of RAM and feed up to 8 GB to a 64-bit version in order to get real performance...

what a bullshit article. no need to cry because you actually bought vista.

you can't compare vista x54 to xp x32.

if you used vista 64 and xp x64 with 8gb of ram the difference would be even biger.

xp is crap

By anon on 01.12.2007 - 14:12
xp is rubbish and under performs, vista rules.

WTF is with this.

By WTF on 01.12.2007 - 15:12
wtf is with every softpedia artical being anti-virus..

and 2nd why does this site feel the need to post each and every one on here also?

8GB with Vista

By ??? on 01.12.2007 - 15:12
so, in order to use vista you need to upgrade to the 64bit version and buy 8gb of ram just to match xps 32bit version running with 1gb ram?

it's not a flaw, it's a feature!

how about

By jj on 01.12.2007 - 15:12
what if they installed xp rtm on a 2001 pc, like a p3 800mhz, with 128 mb ram and a 20gb hard drive, and vista rtm on a similar priced 2007 pc, and then test it? i suspect i know wich one i'd prefer.

Useless Writers

By RedFox on 01.12.2007 - 18:12
what are softpedia writers really trying to do ???
do they want to make abm (any body but microsoft) popular?????????

This article lacks depth and detailed information.

By Hackspiderx on 01.12.2007 - 19:12
i know his issue.that guy shouldn't buy his vista he has to pirate it.lol

well to be serious my old computer (1gb of ddr-400-sd-ram) runs vista just about as good as xp (both 32bit). when theres a little more application/driver support for 64bit i will move on (in windows). i have already installed linux fedora 8 (64bit) it runs so nicely.

anyways i feel bad for the guys who are writing these articles since they will be using vista in a year or two.

dont worry my new machine will have 8gb of ddr2-800-sd-ram pretty soon. i mean its only $60 for a stick of 2gb ddr2-800-sd-ram on newegg.cheap shit. :)

Nice one :P

By mrjoe on 01.12.2007 - 22:12
well, the 8gb is beyond normal users like mine, i only have 4, and i suspect most enthusiasts also have only 4, albeit at 0.8ghz instead of my 0.667ghz.
that's not to say 8gb isn't gonna start flooding the market soon :p

Nice Try Bill !

By Kill_Micro$hit on 02.12.2007 - 00:12
and for win 7, why not 16 gb ddr4 ?

Wierd

By Not Stupid on 02.12.2007 - 00:12
i had a dream that i built another custom rig and it ran win95!!!

thank you

By this is what i say on 02.12.2007 - 02:12
so the fact of the matter, when you take a computer from 2001 and run an os like xp on it, and compair it to an os like vista on a 2007/2008 machine, im sorry, but i can take my windows 98 disk and install it on my 2.6ghz dual core, with 2 gigs of ram etc etc windows 98 will out perform xp, even give it a try in a virtual maching, 98 out performs xp, xpp out performs vista, its life, grow up, buy a computer that works and stop b!tching!!!

Ram & Vista

By PackedFunk on 02.12.2007 - 02:12

"i had a dream that i built another custom rig and it ran win95!!!"

lol--ya thimk there's something about windows going bsckwards in there somewhere?

i used to run a 486sx, 32meg ram, 200 meg hd,win 3.1, aol 16-bit, took 4ever 4 a page 2 load.

spent 8-10 hrs a day reading, learning playing--thought "this internet thing is great!"

now using dual 2gig proc., 2gig ram, 160 gig hd, hi-speed dsl, and xpsp2.

believe me, i am satisfied.

don't need more machine, don't need more software.

life is good.

8Gb RAM!

By Johnson & Johnson on 02.12.2007 - 09:12
wow 8gb ram?

i wonder how windows xp x64 would run with 8gb of memory lol.

fuck you could run vista x64 like a dream, no wonder i'm starting to see pc stores use 8gb ram (seriously.)

8gb ram?

By boogeyman on 02.12.2007 - 13:12
xp runs great with 2 gb ram. it's more than enough...
if i want vista i should get 8 gb ram to get equal to xp 2 gb performance????
wtf was this guy drinking when he wrote this article?

microsoft has 2 has to choose:

a- release a miracle performance sp1 or later on a sp2 patch

b- work hard on windows 7 in order to make a "liter" os that could overpass xp.

let's hope windows 7 isn't vista 2 lol

u guys are missing the point!!

By XtremeMaC on 03.12.2007 - 00:12
those u say compare both os's with min required config. well here's something for u ppl. a new os should be better optimized, faster, more stable, better in every way!!!. its not a game that u need to buy new graphics card to get better graphics. its a cpu based software which is supposed to run faster on dual and quadcores way better than xp, but it does not..its like a car with clogged air intake!!!
u guys are so used to m$'s marketing scheme and just don't care about the extra cash to put into the 8gb ram. and motherboard for that..
u guys have been tricked for long. wake up, vista s ucks! eyecandy = me reloaded

7900gs

By nad on 03.12.2007 - 13:12
lol
vista should be isntalled on directx 9 card for real test..

Win98

By ic on 03.12.2007 - 18:12
actually win98 does not out perform xp.

sillyness

VISTA ROCKS

By Ian on 04.12.2007 - 17:12
ok i used to hate vista p4 3.2

now i got a quad core, 4 gigs orf ram and vista x64 runs like a charm...

get off your wallets and buy a new rig...
dont get ne wrong i would love to run xp pro but with my setup it dosent support quad cores

8 gigs my ass

By blizz26 on 04.12.2007 - 19:12
first off. if you dont have 64 bit vista. it doesnt acknowledge even 4 gigs. 32 bit reads 4 gigs as 3 gigs.

64 bit
running 4 gigs is about the same as 2 gigs. you actually dont see a diference between the two. dont believe me try it!

i ran out and got 2 more gigs after buying my original 2 gigs when i got 64bit ultimate. was pissed vista 32 bit didnt show the 4 gigs. ultimate 64 bit shows 4 gigs but runs the same as i had just 2. didnt see no "big" difference with even 4 gigs. so now they want us to go get 4 more gigs. im on top of that. oh wait, is that ddr3 i hear is coming. grab your nuts boys ddr3 cost as much as the hottest hooker in nyc without aids.

VISTA ROCKS

By Ian on 05.12.2007 - 17:12
ok your a tool

x64 detects 4 gigs period and will detect 8 if yoou throw it in
