Windows XP SP3 Twice as Fast as Windows Vista – Leaves Vista SP1 in the Dust

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 27.11.2007

Forget about Windows Vista. And forget about Windows Vista SP1. Microsoft's latest Windows client has been quite sluggish to begin with. This in both consumer adoption and in terms of the performance it delivers.

As the operating system was crawling along, while performing the most common of tasks, even "speed bumps" seemed an integer part of the road's landscape. Right, that was uncalled for... But still, even on its best day, Vista is slow, and the first service pack for the operating system will change nothing in this aspect. Windows XP SP3 simply flies in comparison to Vista, SP1 or no SP1.

Benchmark testing delivered by the researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a software-developmentcompany based in Florida, revealed that Windows XP SP3 is twice as fast as Windows Vista, with or without SP1 installed. The company threw the two operating systems one against the other on the following configuration: Dell XPS M1710, 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM and nVidia GeForce Go 7900GS video. While Vista SP1 delivered minor and disappointing growth in performance, XP SP3 faired quite well. "Windows XP Service Pack 3 (v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an ~10% performance boost vs. the same configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2. XP SP3 is shaping-up to be a "must have" update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond's not-so-latest and greatest desktop OS. Of course, none of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than 2x slower than the most current builds of its older sibling", revealed a member of Devil Mountain Sofware.

Windows XP SP3 finished the OfficeBench test in approximately 35 seconds, XP SP2 went over 40 seconds with Vista RTM and Vista SP1 both exceeding 80 seconds. The company then added another GB of RAM. Moreover, they also tested Vista in tandem with Office 2007 instead of Office 2003. But while Vista dropped under the 80 seconds milestone it still doesn't even come close to the performance of XP. Commenting the benchmarking Microsoft explained that both Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are still under development and as such, not delivering a complete experience. Vista SP1 is currently planned for the first quarter of next year, while XP has been announced by mid 2008.

"By providing Vista (SP1) with an additional 1GB of RAM (that's a total of 2GB for those of you keeping score) we managed to achieve a "whopping" 4% improvement in OfficeBench throughput. Moving from Office 2007 to Office 2003 definitely improved Vista's showing. Instead of being over 2x slower than XP on the same OfficeBench workload, Vista is now "only" 1.8x slower", the Devil Mountain Software added.

Apples with oranges?

By Minotaur on 28.11.2007 - 08:11
they test an old os with old hardware and it goes well, then they test a new os with the same old hardware and it doesn't - are we really surprised?
i'm sure windows 2000 would fly on my athlon64 6000+, and windows 95 would be even faster.
i'm sure vista will fly on hardware in 3 years time while it will seem sluggish on the new windows os at the time.

Bottom Line

By Nick on 28.11.2007 - 10:11

same equipment , vista slow.

Another Ridiculous

By AndySP on 28.11.2007 - 12:11
another stupid benchmark! officebench? what it means in real world? my xp took more than 2 minutes to turn off sometimes, and vista take no more tham 10 secs.. strange... photoshop opens twice the speed tha opened on xp... hmm, it΄s just me... well, keep with the old if you want, but stop talk rubbish about vista, it΄s a very nice os, so much better xp just using you see, don΄t get fooled with all those fud on the internet.

Devil Mountain screwed Vista

By Ashcat on 28.11.2007 - 14:11
devil mountain screwed vista with this test. when they initially tested vista is was a clean rtm install with office 2007, xp was a sp2 install with office 2003. i guess keeping the work load equal isn't really a big deal to a company running a bench mark. why did they use xp sp2? why not compare vista rtm with xp rtm and use only the same tools at the time of install? their test was flawed from the start, and when they uninstalled vista's office 2k7 copy to install office 2k3 they corrupted their test even worse because they no longer had a clean install of vista. i run vista and xp side by side all day and at the end of the day i prefer vista. i notice no speed issues or gaming performance hits.

IN THE END

By chuck on 28.11.2007 - 18:11

Longhorn server wins

By Rich on 28.11.2007 - 18:11
vista runs well for me so i'll keep it. i tried longhorn server and it's vista supercharged and had almost identical program support as vista.

All depends on hardware.

By MR. Q on 28.11.2007 - 19:11
i just built my system with a c2d and 4gb of ram running vista x64 and it is blazing fast. all hardwares are whql cerfified and i've never received a bsod. bottomline, if you have the hardware built for vista, then it would run like a dream.

Vista flogging a dead horse

By 9/11 inside job on 28.11.2007 - 20:11
xp is lighter than vista, but only because gates/cia/zionists have overloaded the os with masses of spyware/ monitoring code

Ubuntu...

By sjc1963 on 28.11.2007 - 22:11
ubuntu linux does all of vista's trick, and much more, without all of the issues and problems. and you don't have to get the latest and greatest in hardware either.

"if you have the hardware built for vista, then it would run like a dream." - mr. q

mr. q,
if you have the hardware built for vista, then i advise you to run xp with your hardware instead. xp will definitly give you the pleasure experiences of sleeping with real pretty ladies around the globe while vista is just a real painfull dream of wooden sticks in the a$$. but if you prefer your hardware with wooden-sticks over the beautiful girls then keep dreaming of your vista.

Vista vs XP

By ViciousVic on 29.11.2007 - 22:11
the problem is microsoft tries to pack to much software on vista. i used vlite to strip out all the bs vista software that 99% of users dont need and it bechmarks better than xp. microsoft should stick just to the os and quit trying to add all this crap software that most people will nerver use.

Vista far away better than XP/MAC

By ColdZero on 08.12.2007 - 16:12
old technology (xp) is faster than new one on actual hardware like win 3.1 on emulator, but our new tek (vista)
is superior in quality in terms of developing stuff... just wait and see... and stop using your vista transformation pack and change to vista if u rig can...

Vista Rc1

By Vector on 09.12.2007 - 05:12
it made my comp faster but made it harder to search any wheres you usually look for stuff,go fig its full of crap to try and stop the pirates. welcome to the east coast, bill gates.

What about hardware problems?

By piratesmvp04 on 17.12.2007 - 21:12
sure, windows xp sp3 may run faster, but what about the hardware compatibility problems that you'll experience with all the new hardware being released? keep in mind that windows vista with a dual processor runs faster than xp with a dual processor. a local computer shop in my area did a test with that and their tests showed windows vista with internet explorer 7 loads the homepage faster than windows xp with internet explorer 6. still think xp is the real deal, dinosaurs?

wow local computer shop benchmarks

By cokgoblin on 27.12.2007 - 02:12
"a local computer shop in my area did a test with that and their tests showed windows vista with internet explorer 7 loads the homepage faster than windows xp with internet explorer 6."

well that's that sorted then. local computer store sorts out the men from the mice.
