Vista's Biggest Problem Remains Windows XP, Survey Says

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 15.11.2007

Windows Vista biggest worry shouldn't be rival operating systems from Apple Inc. or Red Hat Inc., but competition from Microsoft's own Windows XP.

Microsoft Corp.'s biggest worry over Windows Vista shouldn't be rival operating systems from Apple Inc. or Red Hat Inc., but remains competition from its own Windows XP, an analyst said Wednesday.

"The big story isn't that 32% of the companies we surveyed said that they would start Vista deployments by the end of next year," said Benjamin Gray, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc. "It's that companies have been hugely successful in standardizing on Windows XP."

According to a survey of nearly 600 U.S. and European companies that have more than 1,000 employees, 84% of all their PCs now run Windows XP, up from 67% the year before. While XP may have peaked, Gray warned not to bet against the 6-year-old operating system. "There are plenty of companies looking forward to XP SP3," he said. That next hot-fix and patch rollup is to ship sometime in the first quarter of 2008, Microsoft has said, and it will reportedly be XP's last service pack.

"Vista's biggest competition isn't Apple or Novell or Red Hat; it's Microsoft itself, it's XP," Gray said. So enamored of XP are businesses that Microsoft may feel obligated to extend the operating system's mainstream support past its current April 2009 expiration date. "I wouldn't be surprised," Gray said, although it might require some additional pressure on the company by its largest customers.

Still, XP will eventually get the boot in favor of Vista, Gray said. "Vista isn't a matter of if, but of when and how," he noted.

Nearly a third of the polled businesses -- 32% to be exact -- said they would begin deploying Vista by the end of 2008, while another 17% said they would start in 2009 or 2010. But more than half of all companies remain skittish about Vista, according to Forrester's data. A year after Microsoft released Vista to duplicators, 38% of companies claimed they had no plans at this stage to deploy the operating system. Another 14% said they just didn't know.

Gray also echoed other analysts who last week said Vista plans had been significantly scaled back by most companies. "That's absolutely the case. In May 2006, 40% of the companies we surveyed said they planned on deploying Vista within the first year of its public life," Gray said. "Forty percent were planning on deploying, but by the end of 2007, only 7% will have started. Enterprises are absolutely pulling back from their very, very aggressive deployment plans."

He attributed the lowered expectations to a lack of detailed information about Vista in 2006; too-high prices for PCs with 2GB of memory, which is essentially the minimum needed for Vista, according to company managers; and a larger-than-expected number of incompatible applications.

"Application incompatibility is a big, big headache," Gray said, citing reports from companies preparing for a migration to Vista. Those firms said applications incompatible with Vista made up between 10% and 40% of their software portfolios. "That's causing a lot of XP shops to take a wait-and-see approach to Vista."

This is not rocket science

remove a few features and fixes from xp sp3 due to "issues" and all of a sudden vista looks a whole lot better.

ummmm NO

By zero on 16.11.2007 - 05:11
yea keep thinking that! this goes out to the stone agers who dont like change and complain when things do.

vista for starters is already more secure than xp even with the xp-sp3!!!

way easier and for anyone who has the sp1 for vista can definitely say that its just as fast as xp too.

It's inevitable

By Dan on 16.11.2007 - 08:11
vista's biggest problem is microsoft shoving vista down our throats (ie dx10.) if people don't want to move to vista they should have that choice. but since microsoft has a monopoly they can choose to not support it any longer.

vista has a lot of problems to fix before i will go back. since ms chose to use openal for sound it basically made existing sound cards useless. no sound card makers are supporting openal either. vista's use of resources is terrible. even low end machines which are usually dual core's anyway can't handle it. while that same low end machine is blazingly fast running xp.

microsoft knows that if it holds dx10 to only vista that the gamers will have no choice but to switch. again, it's just ms being ms and forcing their software down our throats.

let's not even get into security. vista will become just as flawed as xp. it's just software which means it can be broken. you don't hear the same complaints about security with osx or linux because the majority of people doesn't use that crap.

bottom line, vista won't make it. by the time it has a chance to become popular the next windows will be released.

Vista's biggest problem is Vista itself!!!

vista is a horse borne dead!
due to bad gestation, i guess...

I've run Vista since the beta

By Mysteryman on 16.11.2007 - 15:11
my comments were how m$ can push people to vista. i've run vista for along time and somethings are irritating as hell (like files that you've downloaded that vista won't let you delete). overall vista is better though.

yea right

By zero on 16.11.2007 - 16:11
or maybe u u have no clue how to use your computer and thats why ur having so many problems. my sound card works perfectly. i work with all types of computers everday that work perfectly fine with vista.

yes i think that m$ made vista a little ahead of the technology at the release time as you do need at least a dual-core or a processor with sse technology to run it smoothly.

but other than that i do graphics, web design, programming, and gaming with no problems. i also have vista on all 3 computers in my house. even my mother-in-laws crappy gateway labtop runs it smoothly!!

all the drivers picked up perfectly!

your the one who does what ur told by the left-wing nut haters of vista who were mainly linux and mac users.

believe nothing you hear and half of what you see.

Zero - Is that the number of your IQ?

just go look at the creative labs forums and tell me that everything with vista is great. sure you can get sound. even surround sound. but hardware decoding for sound and eax doesn't work in vista! i have a sound card i paid almost $400 for that i can't fully use in vista. it's not creative's fault either. it's microsoft's fault for changing the way vista processes sound and the use of openal a few months before vista's release. just another example of the rush job ms did on vista.

i record music with my pc and can't do it with vista because sound issues. i have 15 years experience in computers so i'm pretty sure i know what i'm doing.

a few changes and vista is great but right now it's garbage. sorry to hurt your little feelings.

umm if I worl for M$ then I wouldnt have this...TO JEN

By zero on 17.11.2007 - 05:11
hey if work for m$ then i must have a really good cover beings i have a offshore website...hint...hint...

"zerosworld"

sorry youll have to find it as i cant spam and put the address.

to dan: wow xp had the same problems when it first came out (sp1 also fixed them problems) get your facts straight b4 u speak. i forgot more then you know.

also windows sp1 will fix all the problems the newbies are complaining about. i currently have the latest beta 6001.17042 and it has improved the system drastically.

remember windows xp has 3 service packs so what does that say???

linux yes way faster but lets face it they have updates come out 500 times a day.

bottom line..all os have problems!

i guess no one should use the new macos 10.5 bc some of the printer drivers dont include the scanner driver bc its not compatible with it yet....lol.

the only reason windows vista wasnt 100% compatible with all device is the beginning is ....

-rushed out too fast.
-was written from the ground up.

i mean come on really i feel sorry that thats all u can say with ur 15 years of knowledge.

im finished with this conversation!

totally a waste of my time

by the way

Vista Headache

By Blizz26 on 17.11.2007 - 12:11
what microsoft tried to do is dump vista on the world and say too bad here ya go. microsoft figures we have no choice. they are now finding out different. just because "microsoft" made a new os doesnt mean we have to or will use it. doesnt mean software companies "have" to write software for vista. microsoft is now finding out software companies arent or wont. no matter how you look at it and add in the ecomnomy, its to expensive all the way around. and better yet, its a hog it runs like crap in most pc's. microsoft is asking the world to go buy new pc's for software they control. what gets me the most is with all the virus\spyware that screws up your computer, you can only reactivate vista 10 times. how many of us has redone our pc since windows xp came out for some reason or another. its easier to reinstall your os sometimes than to try to get some f'd up spyware out of your pc. what microsoft should have done. microsoft should have made a "vista pretty patch" they should have made directx 10 for xp and continued to work on security for xp. now we have to start all over trusting vista like we did with xp. took 10 years to trust xp. now that 90% of the world does... microsoft screws up again. people.. do yourselves a favor stick with xp. same goes for software companies and writers. screw microsoft. teach them a lesson. they dont control the world. even though they do with thier software. see what we let them do! if everyone was as devoted to world issues as they are with microsoft. the world could be a better place. i bet more people bought wondows xp in the us than people who voted. they couldnt get thier lasy asses of thier pc's to go vote. hmmmmmm. sounds like a survey to me.

Zero - Get Your Facts Straight

By Dan on 17.11.2007 - 18:11
i didn't run a service pack or patch whatsoever on xp until sp2 and that wasn't even by choice. xp ran great for me since day 1.

the majority of patches for xp have been security patches. unlike vista where they have to address speed issues along with security. get your facts straight! xp and vista do not have the same issues.

vista can't even handle a simple operation like copying or moving a file quickly. for some people it sits there and estimates the time it will take to move that file while xp would have already moved that file and let the user enjoy his day. i actually heard more complaints about xp's service packs than the actual operating system. with vista everyone is hoping this service pack will totally re-write it's code and make it a great os. they're just setting themselves up for a huge disappointment!

fact is that xp is stable and fast. that's all anybody needs. you're always going to have security issues. if you know how to use a computer properly security isn't an issue anyway. in all my years i've never been hacked or been infected by a virus..ever!! learn how to use a computer if you want security!

you've basically proved my point with this statement "the only reason windows vista wasnt 100% compatible with all device is the beginning is ....

-rushed out too fast.
-was written from the ground up."

that, mr. forgotten more than you know, is the whole problem with vista. it was rushed and built from the ground up. the glaring problems with vista make that obvious. they should've tweaked xp like apple did with leopard and not rebuild a whole new os that hardly anyone is going to adopt. and they should've done it years ago.

fact - vista is an over-rated, over-hyped, over-priced, over-bloated piece of software with a pretty interface that does a pathetic job of hiding all it's flaws. it's no wonder why so many people don't pay for it. $400 for ultimate is a slap in the face for their customers. especially when they can't even deliver on it's promise to offer "extras." it took them 8 months to release a final version of dreamscene. couple that with a sorry language pack and a couple new windows games and we're suppose to think we got value for our $400? that's really a slap in the face to the consumer!

i hate apple with a passion but ms needs to learn from them. if ms would make a great operating system and offer it for $99 then people would actually buy the damn thing instead of steal it. that's a fair price to offer an operating system. not $200 and especially not $400! and there's no need for all those different versions.

you're finished with this conversation because you don't know what your talking about and you know it. i know so much more about vista and it's issues than you and i'm not even using it. go run back to your mom's basement and whack off to internet p o r n and let the adults talk.

Zero - More Proof

By Dan on 17.11.2007 - 18:11
i forgot to add if you need more proof that vista is garbage just look at the many pc manufacturers that have opted to still offer xp on their systems because the world doesn't want to adopt vista! it may not s u c k as bad as windowsme but it will have the same fate!

Vista redundant

By Chertoff AIPAC on 17.11.2007 - 22:11
vista is all about a shiny front-end, to impress pea-brains, underneath the glitzy facade lies the big corporations code and yanky (run by aipac)government departments trying to control and monitor your every move. any crackers will tell you after trawling through millions of lines of redundant over-bloated spyware code.

the morons amongst us are lured into this corporate nightmare by a few shiny icons and a ill working sidebar, yes this is how easy it is to buy their souls.

Zero is lame!

By Bruce on 18.11.2007 - 15:11
zero, you don't full me ;)

are u finished yet???

By ZERO on 18.11.2007 - 17:11
wow go jerk off in tha basement?? i live in my own comdo buddy maybe u are the one who whacks off in ur basement which is probably how u came out with that? maybe thats something ur into?

second bruce learn how ro spell before speaking fool not full.

third vista ultimate is $260 in any store where i live. (pa)

yes i agree it has flaws but you are all complaining about minor problems that really dont have the impact you make it out to be. sounds like you havent gotten the updates.

since you dont even use vista how can u say anything?? first you say you used it and vista wouldnt work with your sound card and then you say youve never used but you know more then i do! so which one is it? did you forget what you said?

maybe since your sooooo smart why dont you go spend the money it costs and build your own os! there you go that will solve all your problems and then im sure there will be no more childish complaints.

anyway im not saying m$ is right for the marketing scams involved or how they shoulda did this or that...but i am saying the os is no where near as bad as you all make it out to be. instead of looking for things wrong with it why dont u look at how good it really does work? i even went and installed it on a pentium iii for fun just to see what would happen. it worked just fine no problems with all the old crappy hardware inside...vista handled all of it.

youll see when the sp1 comes out after that your xp will start to be phased out.

you all talk about how vista was thrown in your face but what choice did u have when xp came out?

same thing here. you didnt "have" to use it. you coulda stayed with xp so if you dont use it then stop bitching about it and let the rest of us get our shit done.

crying is for the babies

ps manufacturers are still pre-loading computers with xp??

lets see.....

dell-vista
compaq-vista
hp- vista

dell btw just started selling computers retail in stores and they are even using vista.

look man maybe a few months ago your info was accurate but now it is obsolete.

go study some more my son and come back and see me.
