Microsoft Is Not Throwing Away the Windows Core and Starting from Scratch after Vista

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 9.11.2007

Applause and criticism of Windows are nothing more than collateral products inherent with the success and ubiquity of the product on the operating system market.

According to Larry Osterman, Microsoft Senior Software Development Engineer, some of the negative input associated with the Windows platform point to the abandoning of the current kernel and starting up from scratch.

Osterman however indicated that there is absolutely no chance of Microsoft throwing away the core of the operating system and starting up from scratch with a new technology. Windows 7 (Seven), the successor of Windows Vista is an illustrative example of Microsoft carrying on with the Windows development based on the foundation built with the previous versions of the client. Still, Osterman did not dispute the need for a change.

"And maybe they're right. Maybe Windows would be better if we threw away the current kernel and rewrote it using . I don't know, and I doubt that I'll ever find out. The reason is that making any substantial modifications to an operating system as large and as successful as Windows is hard. Really, really, really hard. You can see this with Vista - in the scheme of things, there were relatively few changes made to existing elements of the operating system (as far as I can tell, the biggest one was the conversion from the XP display driver model to the Vista display driver model), but even those changes have caused a non trivial amount of pain for our customers", he revealed.

And yet, Microsoft is indeed hammering away at the core of the Windows operating system. In this context, Windows 7, the product number imposed by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, to replace the Vienna codename, will feature a brand new, and stripped down kernel. Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut is piling off all possible components from the Windows kernel in search for a bare-bone core dubbed MiniWin.

Kernel IS the problem, Mr. Gates

By Perceval on 10.11.2007 - 09:11
damned m$ did not understood yet that their kernel is the lack of their o/s... in fact they're too lazy to change the kernel, but that's great since in the same time linux is growing, and mac os x is also linux (debian) based os with great days to come :)

Dosent make much sense

By Disk4mat on 10.11.2007 - 10:11
if linux is so great then by all means... enjoy it. why even bother complaining about windows? unless... ;)

kernel istn a problem

By kj on 10.11.2007 - 19:11
check out minwin. the windows kernal can be run at a size of only 30 odd mb. its all the bloat they add afterwards like vista drm and uac. its things like that which slow it down. i agree about linux and mac tho. this is their chance to take a bigger amrket share over the next few yaears til windows 7

Mac ain't the answer..

By Zoban on 11.11.2007 - 04:11
looks like leopard has gooten worse reviews then vista so that puts mac's out in the cold fanboy or not.. lol..

uac isn't a problem

By samic on 11.11.2007 - 08:11
saying uac slowing the system down is just like saying sudo slowing macosx/linux down - it's a ridiculous claim. they just a function that elevate user permission and literally took no system resource. drm isn't even kicks in if the media isn't decoded in premier content decoder path. and for godsake, mac osx is *not* based on linux. it's based on freebsd, which is a "real unix" (not linux!) linux is a unix-like os, a completely different thing.

if linux was so good they wouldn't have gone into the whole o(1) scheduler fiasco.

WINDOWS *MUST* BE BLOATED. ITS MANDATORY.

By c4p0ne on 11.11.2007 - 12:11
i guess you fúcking people really just don't understand, do you? windows is an os that must append extra helpings of bloat in every subsequent version. the bloat is 100% deliberate!

can't ya' bums understand that if ms actually makes a smooth-running low-memory usable os, that hardware manufacturers will fail to sell jack fÚcking sh1t of new hardware? windows bloat equals massive sales for intel & amd, memory-chip manufacturers, etc..

this is a massive game designed to unnecessary amounts of money out of everyones pocket, and put it into thiers. and thats why, *2* can play this game, if you're gonna make me buy 500+ bucks worth of new god-damn hardware every time you release and full-force rape us with a new windows (absolutely unable to buy a laptop without vista nowadays, no choice), the very fúcking least *i* can do is never pay for your regurgitated crap.

slow down, troll

By Bob on 11.11.2007 - 17:11
you know why windows pcs have the highest hardware requirements? because their the ones you can play games on.
if you dont want to play games, get a mac or a linux box and go send your friends some funny e-mails
