Top 10 Absolute Worst Windows Applications in 2007

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 5.11.2007

Think Windows Vista is bad? Well, the fact of the matter is that is largely a subjective perspective that is little open to dispute. However, when it comes down to what users can integrate with the operating system, the situation is a tad more severe.

Security company Bit9 compiled a list with the top 10 absolute worst Windows application in 2007 from a security point of view, focusing on items full of Critical security vulnerabilities.

Security has always been a top issue with the Windows operating system, be it on the client or the server side. But while Microsoft has been hammering away at the platform, and with stages in product evolution such as Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista (via the Secure Development Lifecycle), the threat environment is finding alternative paths, independent of Microsoft. In this context, third party applications developed outside the Microsoft sphere of influence are the new avenues of attack for a shifting threat environment.

In the recently released Microsoft Security Intelligence Report covering January – June 2007, the company illustrated an increasing trend for operating systems to be targeted less and less. Insecure third-party applications give attackers and ample window into the operating system, bypassing the native security boundaries, features and mitigations introduced by Microsoft.

"These popular applications are frequently downloaded to corporate desktops by users and can present unnecessary security risk to IT and business operations", said Brian Gladstein, Director of Product Marketing and author of the research brief. "The good news is that there are several steps that IT departments can take to shield themselves and fix these vulnerabilities in the application layer."

According to Bit9 here are the most vulnerable applications running on Windows today:

1. Yahoo Messenger 8.1.0.239 and earlier
2. Apple QuickTime 7.2
3. Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6
4. Microsoft Windows Live (MSN) Messenger 7.0, 8.0
5. EMC VMware Player (and other products) 2.0, 1.0.4
6. Apple iTunes 7.3.2
7. Intuit QuickBooks 9 and earlier
8. Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_X
9. Yahoo! Widgets 4.0.5 and previous
10. Ask.com Toolbar 4.0.2.53 and previous

Gve me a BREAK !!!

By Flushed on 06.11.2007 - 12:11
those are applications which are generally used by millions user for everyday tasks, but my eyes jumped out because mozilla in the list. let's take an example, honda sold 1 million cars while toyota only 100 thousand cars, no wonder you'll see more honda in the garage than toyota, but it doesn't mean that honda are the worst car. same fact as mozilla and ie, millions people are using mozilla while only 100 people using ie, no wonder hacker/cracker targeted mozilla for exploiting script than using ie because in mozilla the hacker can targeting into more users. and when user get hacked, they just easily said that mozilla is the worst ? come on guys, there are people working and updating mozilla and even better you get it without costing you a penny and still you give it a title as the worst one ?....oh give me a break !!!

Blame Game of Microsoft PR Machine

By ;( VistaUsr :( on 06.11.2007 - 12:11
this oftware list's out dated. most of the security holes were quickly patched by the developers. most software have been revised and released in several revisions already ie.. itune 7.5.0.20, quicktime 7.3

this the work of the microsoft pr machine to trash, pointing finger and blame other software developers instead of making the vista & microsoft products work better and more secure.

By Nick on 06.11.2007 - 22:11
and yet when a vulnerability is discovered in firefox it is addressed immediately if not sooner.
firefox has a multitude of customization options for appearance and function.
not hacking for firefox, it just has a better look and feel.

The only holes

By Nick Manning on 07.11.2007 - 05:11
you clowns know about are the stinkholes you sink your little weenies into every night. firefox is a buggy, security hole ridden mess. if you want a safe browser, use opera. even an ie shell with toned down security settings like maxthon, avant, sleipnir, etc is safer than firefaux.

Tea Bagging

By Big Bill on 07.11.2007 - 15:11

all these aren't compatible with anything! no games, no hacking shut the fukc up you apple noobs. and something else. firefox is in the list???? ie7 + windows firewall = hack scripts, remote controlling, ads, ads, ads, ads, slow browsing (doesn't support pipelining but even without that, it is sh!t again), no extensions

Sounds great! Can I get in on the action?

By Hacker?pc on 09.11.2007 - 20:11
hey xfx, i'd like you to tea bag me too! maybe you, billy g., and i could get together for a threesome, eh??
