Try Windows Home Server for 120 days

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 3.11.2007

Microsoft is offering a 4 month trial of Windows Home Server for evaluation purposes.

The Windows Home Server 120-Day Evaluation Kit includes a Windows Home Server Installation DVD, a Windows Home Server Connector CD and a Home Computer Restore CD. A backup is recommended prior to installation as the setup process for server installation will erase any existing data.

Microsoft provides the minimum specifications, which aren’t very high at all, and minimum requirements on the website below. The software giant also notes that a wireless connection between Windows Home Server and the network is not supported, although home computers connected wirelessly to the wireless router can access the Home Server.

Question RE: WHS

By Darren on 04.11.2007 - 18:11
has anybody noticed that when using windows home server, if you want to connect your external usb hard drive, say a western digital 750gb model, to share your videos, pictures and whatever files, your not able to do that at all, because windows home server must first delete your hard drive to format it first!

now think about that, format the hard drive, even if it was already ntfs! and all you wanted to do was just share them photos, etc...

so what your suppose to do is connect your hard drive to a computer first and transfer all your files, 750gb or if your like some 4tb to windows home server just to share them.

how is the what everyone wants to do here?

now if you were to use freenas, a linux solution, none of this is any issue, and it happens to offer ssl, tls and sftp support unlike windows home server.

i should also mention freenas is free, it's an open source project.

microsoft just wants to insure everyone is locked into their way of doing things.

prove me wrong, connect your external usb or even esata hard drive to windows home server, and see the results for yourself.

ps. windows home server does not play nice to any other operating system unlike the freenas edition.

WHS USB Drive - External

you do not have to format the drive first to add it! you can add it normally to the server and share the files, like you would on xp. if you add the drive to the server pool of drives, then it will be formatted and drive extender will add it to the pool of drives in the server.
you will not see it as a separate drive if added to the pool. i have an external 250 gig that is attached to the server, but not added to the drive pool, it shows up as drive e on the server, it's shared and can be accessed by going to the network shares.
