Hackers Open Up Mac OS X Leopard for PC

section: common, for your questions: KezNews forum, 1.11.2007

Apple has a new set of hackers to contend with: a group of developers on the OSx86Scene forum have published instructions on how to install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a standard PC.

The move will no doubt bring Apple's legal team a knocking very soon, but for the time being, the instructions are still available on the organization's website. Not all features are available to those who install the OS, however it is apparently stable.

Apple is not only fighting hackers who wish to bring the company's OS to the PC, but also those who are trying to break into the iPhone and iPod Touch. An application called Jailbreak has been released, and Apple in updates have specifically tried to fight back through "bricking" hacked devices.

Umm why?

i (kind of) understand the logic behind them not wanting ppl to hack iphones. but what's wrong with ppl installing osx on pcs? when will microsoft start complaining about ppl installing windows on macs? someone should take a baseball bat and hit some of these retards. god damn if you don't want ppl to install your software on their computers don't f***ing make software in the first place.

Hey KOzOK

By Yoni on 01.11.2007 - 19:11
i believe you are missing the point here.
apple sells its os to increase their shares and profits as well as keeping their competition in the market but apple's earnings mainly comes from the hardware sales (macbook, imac, etc). that's the first thing you need to take into account before taking a bat in your hands and call them retards (i guess you should call them millionaires)
if apple grants osx to run on common pcs they will be losing billions of dollars or maybe their osx leopard could cost as much as vista does. they had the idea, they have the business, they have what they have.

in the mean time you could drop the bat and get some books and start studding programming so you can code your own os and troll it the way you want. as i mentioned before it is their os and they make the rules. it would be really "retard" to spend thousands in a business and then let kozok to tell them how to run their business... dear, you need to get down the earth because you are lost in the space...

Apple and profits

By pags2 on 01.11.2007 - 20:11
apple's biggest mistake was to tie its operating system to their hardware. this happened when the first pc's came out and the price differential is what created the conditions for ms to get the lion's share of computer os and software. if they want to make the same mistake again then so be it. most people are likely to buy a win pc because of the variety of software particularly games.

i own vista and have used mac before i think its a bit pointless as windows is compatable with almost everything and mac isnt windows vista looks better as well and most people use it why not just use windows?

Hey Yoni

By KOzOK on 01.11.2007 - 21:11
yes i get it, they want to make money. and main source of their income is hardware. however, you can't expect to be selling software (imo some decent software) and expect every one to drop their pcs, and go out and buy their overpriced hardware.
let's just say that most of the world will switch to macs and osx. will we have another microsoft on our hands? anti trust this and that. it would be monopoly after all, some would say with superior product, but still. i don't hear anyone crying about it (not yet).
they should be grateful that their stuff is generating so much interest, maybe now ppl will start buying more of their hardware. or they can just go back to using non intel based cpus, that way problem will be solved.
btw i tried my hand at coding, just not my thing. feel much better with hardware, thx, gg.

Apple and profits

By pags2 on 01.11.2007 - 22:11
apple's policy about software and hardware nearly caused them to go out of business a few years ago. why would they want to repeat that mistake if their os can run on an intel? it doesn't make sense. the only way they can gain on windows is to put out a version that will run on an intel and make it cheaper than ms product. once they make headway on the os then software and games will follow. it would put ms on the defensive and they would have to significantly cut prices.

CrApple

By Dan on 02.11.2007 - 00:11
apple is as far as it will ever go. if you want more market share then you have to compete with a pc. if apple allowed it's users to build their own macs and around a price competing with a pc then mac would probably be the leader of the market. but they would also lose one of their marketing strategies. the fictional "a mac doesn't get a virus" champaign. they don't get viruses because they don't own the market. bigger market = bigger target. software is software. it can be hacked and infected no matter what it is.

now, about putting leopard on a pc. it would be interesting to see how it runs. i just don't like the layout and plain look of the mac os. at least vista is vibrant and colorful. osx is just too plain. i don't think osx is that user friendly either. i've used macs before and they can be just as confusing as a pc.

apple has great marketing people but that's it.

Apple

By pags2 on 02.11.2007 - 06:11
apple is doomed to stay a minor market player so long as they insist on controlling the hardware aspect. an os should operate on every type of computer and not be tied to the hardware. that is just as monopolistic as ms practices but they don't have to try real hard for control since there is no real competition. i have no intention of trying a mac because of the lack of variety in software. nor will i try to install the cracked os as it would be a waste of time.

Hmmm, reality check time

By wizdumb on 02.11.2007 - 09:11
don't know if you've been reading the financial times but apple has had one of the best years ever for the macintosh and their profits. they have arguably the most attractive well designed hardware and a remarkably stable, stylish and powerful os. because they create both the hardware and os software that runs on it, they are able to generate an experience for the end user that at the moment can not be beat by anyone. and it is for this same reason they also provide a wonderfully stable hardware platform to run even windows on. macbook pro, bootcamp 1.5 and windows has proven to be the most trouble free machine i have ever run windows on! and i have had alot over the years. however, osx 10.5 is so enjoyable and productive to use, i find myself ever less frequently booting windows at all. true the entry fee is a bit higher but in this case, "you get what you pay for". with osx you get an slick os with a lot of depth underneath the hood (unix) , no copy protection baloney, no viruses (so far) and so no money stealing, performance and resource grabbing, distracting virus/spyware/rootkit/trojan programs needed! try a mac and i guarantee you will very likely never want to look back.

...continued

By wizdumb on 02.11.2007 - 09:11
unless you enjoy fixing problems with your windows/machine more than actually getting anything useful done on it, you will definitely be better of with a mac.

...and finally

By wizdumb on 02.11.2007 - 09:11
apple really doesn't mind people trying to install osx on non-apple hardware simply because osx running on a "hackintosh" will very likely always be a less-than-ideal experience because osx is written specifically to run best with the mac hardware. but, it gives windows slaves a chance to experience a reasonably close facimile of what it feels like to use osx instead of windows which quite often has the result of that user purchasing apple's hardware when the time comes for them to upgrade since it will run osx like a champ as well as windows if they should ever need to run it. i'm no zealot, but apple is doing alot of things right at the moment. now that i've have a mac, i'm actually enjoying computing again rather than pulling my hair out dealing with the endless parade of windows bs. most of the people i know have actually pulled vista off there new machines and reinstalled xp!

ummm, how much did/would Apple pay u, wizdumb

By fung on 02.11.2007 - 12:11
wizdumb, what you said seems hard-sell to me. goto apple and claim some money from them. they'll love what you said here

Apple OS

By pags2 on 02.11.2007 - 14:11
i am not criticizing the os but apple's policy. their profits may be improving but when all is said and done the numbers of windows users compared to apple is overwhelming. they can claim a better os, prettier interface, etc., but they are never going to capture a major share of the os market until they decouple the software from the hardware.

But I think tht's there advantage...

By wizdumb on 02.11.2007 - 16:11
maybe they won't rule the roost for a long time if ever, true...but if they decoupled an tried to support the entire chasm of hardware like windows does, i think it's very likely they would lose the advantage of a stable, relatively problem free platform. i think this would leave them ultimately with an even samller percentage and a lot more headaches along with it. i think apple's approach of attempting to have the best hardware and software combo is the key to their current success.

lol windows vista is crap

By my mother on 02.11.2007 - 22:11
yay for mac and linux and sun.

Somebody tell Apple & MS

By DOS6.2 on 03.11.2007 - 01:11
it's already been said but to simplify.
1: apple need to make money from software instead of hardware.
2: if i could build an apple from cheap bits like i do a pc then apple wouldn't be a minnow in the market.(tell apple)
3: apple have the right idea w leopard, it's faster not more bloated.(tell ms)
so yes if apple wasnt a minnow (see pt 2) then ppl would actually write software for it & nobody would bother with windows sh!t. 99% of ppl use windows cause they have no choice (tell apple)

By Dan on 03.11.2007 - 08:11
apple is probably profiting more off their ipod sales than their pc's. they might be having a great year but it's not a result of their product. it's a result of their incredible marketing campaign. but not even that can give them the majority of the market.

if windows was so bad then why even offer to have it load on a mac? i thought osx could do everything. just goes to show how strong windows is in the market even for mac users. actually that whole idea of loading windows on a mac was a failed attempt to try and sway windows users to a mac.

you pretty much proved my point that apple will stay where it is in the market because they fail to branch out to the rest of the world who doesn't want to be a slave to a few choices of hardware and software. if apple was king they wouldn't be able to hide behind their campaign of lies that macs never get viruses or spyware.

mac users are the biggest slaves on the planet. steve jobs has them eating out of his hand. every year a new ipod is released and every year a mac user will by it. anytime a new imac comes out they buy it. let's not talk about slaves because mac users are the worst! not to mention they are some of the most smug people i have ever met!

my pc is trouble free. why? because i built it and i know how to use it. idiots that get viruses and spyware and have their system crash shouldn't own a computer in the first place. but that's the market apple is going after...idiots that want to recklessly operate a computer.

had microsoft made a few changes to vista i would still be using it. vista is a totally different animal than xp. leopard can't say the same thing. leopard was just giving a couple of new programs and some tweaks. that's it! they didn't totally rebuild their os like microsoft did.

like i said before. apple will not get as far as they are today because of how they control their little corner of the market. and mac junkies like yourself will continue to rave about how well apple is doing and how great they are when they are only a pimple on the butt of the market.

some one tell appe

By devilshaven on 09.11.2007 - 22:11
apple is like all the rest, price gouging me canadian macbook here in canada still cost 200$ more then in the usa. same for all apple stuff

unfortenatly in my opinion osx is considerably worse of a ui then windows for multitasking, bussiness, and hell games

they should just give up with osx, and try to join somthing with ms to make one better os, and u will soon see more and more mac's use vista

i know its sad, but ms is winning.

and stop gouging canadians, its probebly worth it for me to drive 2 hours to baffalo to buy a macbook

Macs vs. PCs

By Guntis Bukalders on 11.11.2007 - 19:11
"apple's biggest mistake was to tie its operating system to their hardware."

i think it's not a mistake, it's the best decision. less problems with hardware drivers, extremely rare kernel panics, etc. ms is constantly struggling with million different hardware configurations. plus work-arrounds to get old applications to run on newer versions of windows and bugs in wondows - i read somewhere that windows has about 2000 (!) artificially emulated bugs for older applications to enable them to run. once windows had some bug, and application was written with work-arround, then ms fixed that bug, but application relied on that bug and didn't run, so ms added bug emulation for that application to ensure compatibility. apple has different approach - once bug is fixed, application should be updated to run on the fixed os.

***

"they should just give up with osx, and try to join somthing with ms to make one better os, and u will soon see more and more mac's use vista".

not true. problem is that for too many people computer=windows. if it doesn't run windows, it can't be computer. now macs *can* run windows, and many people install it, because that's the only thing they know - only to remove it after a while when they're aquinted with mac os x and find how much superior it is.

it would be the most stupid decision to join windows development. windows is broken in its foundation. for example, registry. once it get corrupted, you have to reinstall windows and all applications. on mac there is no such centralisation, and if some preference file gets corrupted, just delete it and upon next application launch it will be created new and clean. the same goes for system - in windows all applications can install support files in windows folder and system32 folder. and soon there is real dll hell. in mac no application can install anything in system folder, so it's much less possibility for the 3rd party applications to ruin os. the same about network - windows was concieved as desktop os, not as the network os. mac os x from the beginning has been built as network os. thre are too many fundamental differences what makes mac os x far superior to windows.

It's Bad MS Software NOT (Hardware or User or Apple)

By Andy on 16.11.2007 - 14:11
dan,
-- 99% of the wintel-pc-users (home & business) don't build their own pcs. they buy them from dell, hp, sony and other manufacturers. the users know how to use their purchased pcs as well as you know how to use your own custom pc. so don't call them idiots.
-- the problem is neither caused by the manufacturer hardware nor by the user skills. the real problems for all wintel-pc users (you're included) are caused by the bad software by microsoft. the xp is still a preferred operating system for majority of the home and business users because the microsoft vista is so poorly designed and badly implemented.

sigh at this..

By ChrisMRuLZ on 17.11.2007 - 01:11
osx on a pc.. all good and well,
but honestly, who cares?
it's arguable whether the ui or functionality of the os is better than windows..
the only difference is that windows can run games and app's.
mac's are just pieces of shit that only run their built-in apps.
they should stick to the phone/mp3 player platforms.
pc's are intended to run stuff, who gives a shit how easy or pretty the gui is?

if we could get a mac osx emulator, that might be fun to play around with,
but i feel sorry for anyone that tries to install osx as their main/only os.

um no.
people don't use the windows emulator on a mac cos it's all they know how to use,
they'd install it in a desperate attempt to be able to run their apps on.
doubt it would do very much though..
from what i hear it's a really basic emulator..
good luck running crysis on it,
or playing hd-dvd's..

Ubuntu on a Mac

By Rootbrian on 23.11.2007 - 05:11
i seen ubuntu running on a mac with no kernal panicks. since os x is based on unix or linux, then it's basicly the same thing. os x will always have linux behind it. same goes for dos 7.1 or 8.0 and windows for workgroups 3.11 with networking (and a few hacks to run on new hardware) on a new pc. boots in seconds, starts in less than a second.

mac, linux & any anti-microsoft based os is awesome. we know we all can get a break from windows!!! try ubuntu!! get a free cd from the website (ubuntu.com) and slowly make the switch to linux the easy way. kde is almost like xp or vista, as close as ya can get with nice appearances & a clean gui.

vista

By e hack on 24.11.2007 - 23:11
i am running vita now the only thing that i have seen wrong with it is that it requires 2 much ram to run boot camp caz of the 512mb's of ram requirements, but i havent had any probs with vista so why evry 1 hate it, it coulid use some tweakn, but its not bad.

re:e hack

By iTouchMyself on 01.12.2007 - 15:12
that's one of microsofts big flaws, there's always something wrong with it, and what do they do? they just release more versions of it, and want you to buy it.

i see much more mac updates on all software from mac, but when was the last few time you saw a "windows update"?
in the last few months, i've seen a lot of itunes updates to 7.5, leopard 10.4-1.05, and i've even seen the safari windows version being updated! it's up to 3.0.4 now.
k windows. yep, you came out with another microsoft office. lemme just grab that for my mac.

windows users use their computers to run operating systems.

By macuser on 02.12.2007 - 06:12
i'm hearing alot of things here. i'll start by saying i'm an avid mac user. i'll also say i've been a tech fixing pcs and macs for many years. so, no. i'm not stupid.

one of my mac based clients needed a (hell of a) windows pc in order to run ripping software for a large format printer. by hell of a pc, i mean quad xeons, and 4 gigs of ram. for minumum specs. they went with the mac pro running windows because:

1: it was cheaper than a comparable dell (dead serious. check it out. make sure your comparing the right xeons- the 5100 series, with 4megs of lev.2 cache. that's what the mac is using.) i also couldn't build it, because i couldn't find a motherboard that would support those chips, and a decent video card (all the mobos that supported the processors were server mobos with built in video and no pci).

2. they could use it as both a mac and a pc. twice the computer out of it.

the other complaint i'm hearing on this particular forum is that macs don't have apps. i wonder what apps your all using that aren't supported? i guarantee that there are similar things available for osx. usually for free.

and as far as games? very few games aren't available for mac at all. very few. you might have to open your eyes a little. and you'll also get most of your processing power working on the games, instead of the bloated operating system.

vista

... ehack... you're using vista on a machine with less than 512megs of ram?

thats an accomplishment.

... they're not running a windows emulator...

they're running windows. natively.
