Microsoft update brings PCs to a standstill

section: microsoft, for your questions: KezNews forum, 25.10.2007

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

Something seems to have gone horribly wrong in an untold number of IT departments on Wednesday after Microsoft installed a resource-hogging search application on machines company-wide, even though administrators had configured systems not to use the program.

"The admins at my place were in a flap this morning because Windows Desktop Search 3.01 had suddenly started installing itself on desktops throughout the company," a Reg reader by the name of Rob informs us. "The trouble is that once installed, the indexer kicks in and slows the machines down."

The blogosphere is buzzing with similar reports, as evidenced by postings here, here and here.

"I'm slighly pissed of [sic] at M$ right now," an admin in charge of 3,000 PCs wrote in a comment to the first aforementioned link. "All the clients have slowed to a crawl, and the file servers are having problems with the load."

A Microsoft spokeswoman said she was looking in to the reports.

According to Reg tipster Rob, Window Server Update Services forced Windows Desktop Services 3.01 on the fleet of machines even though admins had configured their system to install updates only for existing programs and the search program wasn't installed on any machines (well, until then, anyway).

It's been a rough several weeks for managers running Microsoft's auto update services. Last month, bloggers disclosed the existence of a Windows patch that silently and automatically installed itself even on Machines configured not to install updates. Critics cried foul on the principle that users should have absolute control over their machines. They also argued that the stealth update could hamper compliance requirements.

Microsoft said the patch was installed on machines only to make sure Windows Update worked properly in the future. Managers promised to be more transparent in the future.

i installed linux (ubuntu) a few months ago and have had no problems really. well not compared to vista. i still dual boot xp for games and multimedia but im looking towards a mac to get rid of windows and just run leopard and linux. m$ just keeps screwin up....damn monopolies

Linux

By anon on 25.10.2007 - 22:10
linux won't do crap for you if you play games. if you just browse the internet its fine. thats why microsoft has a monopoly on the market.

fanboyism is [ not ] allowed nor tolerated!

fanboy or fanboi is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. fanboys are also stereotypically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.

Linex? You mean Linux !

By Lines on 26.10.2007 - 02:10
if you like being treated constantly like a criminal by ms and being spied on then best of luck to you.

linux does not do that crap. support for games will increase as users increase, so sitting on your hands by using windows and complaining about lack of game support for linux is not going to improve game support. game developers want to see a viable market on linux before they will put the effort in (some already do i.e. id software).
there are a few big game titles that work native on linux and some windows game titles that work with linux with using wine. see links below to see some games listed.

more support for linux opens up more freedom and support for users. or you could remain a (suspected criminal) prisoner of ms. your choice

lol...

By Jacob on 26.10.2007 - 03:10
i moved to linux too a few days ago, just look at all the bad things microsoft have been doing in this month alone.

microsoft is nothing but a money grubbing piece of crap on my shoe.

Linux... it is all about freedom...

By Scofield on 26.10.2007 - 03:10
if ms is updating your windows pc without notice and against your will, you should not be allowed to touch a pc to begin with. those guys don’t have a clue what they are doing. those admins are doing a great job!

nowadays the great answer for a computer or os problem is linux...
common... linux is not ready for desktop, at least its ready only if you just browse the web, listen to music, check your mail, check some photos that's all. where is photoshop?(plz don’t say gimp) autocad?, mathlab? where are the commercial games or applications used by professionals? why adobe doesn’t bother to release its professional products on linux. no market share! it’s good for servers (cost effective).

viruses, spywares are written for windows because it’s more popular, it has a bigger target audience. why bother writing viruses for linux or mac (unix?!) the market share is too small! if you are setting up a server you should know what you are doing and know about security. linux also has its problem. you will never hear the problems linux has, why?? because it’s free. to whom will you complain?? there are over 80 distros and a simple e.g to get wireless working or your mobo or an ati card working right it’s a number game. if usability, productivity and user friendliness means spinning a cube then you know what to use. at least you can’t criticize linux because its free. linux is about freedom… freedom to chose, so why the linux fanboys are getting angry?? use whatever os you want! or better, use os x, windows and linux!

"so why the linux fanboys are getting angry??"

no angry linux users here that i see. frustration with ms as the topic suggests, yes, of course. linux is good because if micosoft continues to dictate with its users then it will lose as the user base of linux will increase. without linux then you and others would be worse off. competition is healthy to keep everybody honest.

linux driver support with over 300 devs awaiting to program some drivers.
http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/twiki/bin/view

as far as adobe and others are concerned, not supporting linux is their lose and if a professional cannot use the tools provided then the word professional seems misused. sounds like a win for open source devs and a lose for adobe.

Yea right...

By Sebu on 26.10.2007 - 09:10
vista x64 on my desktop, ubuntu on my laptop, debian on my htpc server. for each platform; right os for the right job. fanbois are mentally retarded and need help.

an emotional bond with any specific brand, company or an os (apple fanbois are the worst) is sick. get help people, before it's too late...

Regards: Yea right...

By Mac on 26.10.2007 - 11:10
sebu,
so you have an emotional dislike for apple since you do not use it. seems that you are *the emotional fanboy* posting your opinion on your favorite oses. your opinion of wow, right os? makes you a great fanboy. posting some content to support the topic may make you look otherwise.

arguments

By sigh on 26.10.2007 - 17:10
it's hilarious. the same arguments over and over again on a billion different forums.

Mac - fanbois

By Mouarf on 27.10.2007 - 10:10
at mac

i agree with sebu: mac fanbois are the worse, i lol everytime i go over macworld or similar forums:
- apple locking iphones: it is genius! what a great stategy.
- interoperability over itunes and the ipod from the eu? just screw them! jobs is my guru and i love drm and all these lovely restrictions on the music i bought.
- amazon selling songs cheaper and drm free? god bless itunes: i will never change of drug dealer, i want to pay more!
- patchy/uneven prices between countries in europe or between the canada and the us? this is all normal! it is obvious it cost far more at apple to let its users download their music off their servers past the border...
- iphone is made of dangerous materials dixit greenpeace? fuck them! why do they critic apple and not others?
etc.

basically some have lost any critical thinking and will defend their obsessive brand like brainwashed parrots, always putting it over their own rights or interests, pathetically funny. ofc i won't generalize but i noticed that this was somewhat recurrent for this brand.

You guys are pathetic

By James on 27.10.2007 - 12:10
operating systems are good at different things, macs are good at media and security, windows is good for gaming... but not much else.

and linux is good for internet browsing and office work.

emotional dislike...?

By sebu on 29.10.2007 - 09:10
at mac

emotional dislike for a specific brand, just coz i don't opt to use it? omg this must be some of the very poorest logic i've ever read anywhere!!

no, i don't have an emotional dislike for apple. i do own an ipod afterall.

my wallet has a dislike for the lost liquidity, in terms of premium price point over meager, if not non-existing advantage over other options in the market; which is how i conceive mac & os/x

my viewpoint is simply practical i posted my os of choice, for the platforms in question, and what functions they are driving. no more, no less...

..if i do have an emotional dislike, it's with the zealotry of group of people, who i very much regard as a huge annoyance.

this also goes with certain ubuntu imposing "pied pipers"

Mac Leopard 10.5

By TonytheTiger on 29.10.2007 - 20:10
now would be a time to go mac leopard osx. you can even run windows! but who really would want too!
