Linux Is Copying Windows Vista

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 11.10.2007

Forget about Windows Vista! Introducing Vixta, an open source, Linux-based, copy of Vista. Generally speaking, Linux, open source, Microsoft and Windows are by no means aligned concepts.

In fact, with the exception of the Linux and Windows technical interoperability efforts derived from the Microsoft and Novell agreement focused on heterogeneous environments, the two platforms don't mix. Not even by far. Additionally, Microsoft's latest Windows Operating system, Windows Vista was regarded as a window of opportunity for Linux to increase its foothold on the client side. Almost nine months into the general availability of Vista, and the various distributions of the open sourceplatform are still situated under the 1% market share milestone, according to statistics provided by net Applications.

At the same time, Vista grew past the 7% market share mark, indicating that from January 30, 2007, Microsoft shipped in excess of 70 million copies of the operating system. In this context, a part of the open source community decided to find inspiration in Windows Vista. Vixta features the KDE based Desktop Environment and is essentially a Fedora-based distribution. But on top of it all, Vixta is nothing more than a Vista copy. Of course the open source and the Microsoft proprietary operating systems are not identical. In fact, under the hood, Vixta is still Linux, all the way. But on the surface, the similarities between the two operating systems are evident.

"Vixta.org Release 095 very soon! Goals: absolutely free, in every sense; spread linux to the "masses"; ABN - AbsolutelyNo Config; User-Frendly; Eye-catching and familiar look and Feel," are the promises Vixta developers made to users. Vixta brings to the table a graphical user interface that is a knock-off of Windows Aero in Vista. And the GUI copying is also illustrated in the name of the Linux distribution, as the difference between Vixta and Vista is almost inexistent. Microsoft failed to comment in any manner on the promised delivery of Vixta, but the Redmond company will undoubtedly tackle the Linux distribution through its legal department if the name and the GUI similarities will survive. Just click on the screenshots below in order to get an idea of the visual style of Vixta.

omg... linux can look so good, why do they try to make it that ugly? o_o

i don't know what the sense of this project is...

vista gui lovers will use windows cause they are to lazy to learn a new (and better ^^) system...

linux lovers will use another distribution because they don't like the vista-alike gui...

so who are targeted with this project? xd

just my 2cents (but euro cents, dollar s*cks ;) )

who knows

Linux Is Copying Windows Vista

By TC on 12.10.2007 - 02:10
just keep kicking microsofts ass linux.
this is great stuff.

It's missing something...

By Turd Master on 12.10.2007 - 06:10
it may look like vista... but, it's got none of the vista features (super fetch, etc.). i've never used linix before, but i've never paid for microsoft software, so i'll go with microsoft... people get paid to create an os, and peeps get paid to fix it. the true vista also looks a hell of a lot better.. even if it need more resources, but... ur gunna have to get more resources sooner than later cause technology advances way too quickly to fall behind...

why bother

By siga on 12.10.2007 - 14:10
when i first installed my pclinuxos i made it look like vista . novelty wore of fast . why bother since i have something better and make it look like inferior os .
as for eye candy beryl makes vistaero look like win95

Sadly, vixta

By karpa on 12.10.2007 - 15:10
i'm so sad you had the unfortunate idea of copying redmond's vista product look.
i think this gives one an idea of sick frustration, like if "you can't get the real thing" idea. i think this 'cheapens' gnu/linux as a whole.
please announce dead vixta soon, thank you.

Looks are only skin deep

By FUD Killer on 13.10.2007 - 06:10
sure it looks nice. thats all linux has going unless all you do is surf and check email.

gaming? nope. multimedia? nope. competitor to windows? nope.

i dont think so

By siga on 13.10.2007 - 16:10
yes it is competitor to ms . pclos play all my media . it works with my printer . all my hardware is recognized , there is no viruses to speak off . it uses less resources , all software is free . if you are into gaming you can try cedega and if you need other ms software there is wine and crossoffice. if that is not enough try emulators like virtual box or xen or pear pc .there is no reason for one to pay for inferior and resource hungry and unsafe os when there is something better .

Siga : linux fanboy

By BasicKiller on 14.10.2007 - 10:10
get the fcuk out of here you retard its windows forum. spend some money and try to buy some real shit rather than using free simulators. if you still do't understand try to play bioshock or crysis.

fyi: vista gui is way batter than vixta

By chrbl on 14.10.2007 - 20:10
i could swear i saw this same preview as a linux theme on deviantart !! as a user was trying to imitate vista on linux .. idk .. o_o

By NUCLEAR-TNT on 15.10.2007 - 16:10
