Vista SP1: Create a recovery disc
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 1.10.2007
One of the new administrative tools Windows Vista Service Pack 1 provides is the ability to create a recovery disc. Thanks to pacpis for this news.
At first, the name might fool you into thinking the type of discs system manufacturers provide to you when you purchase a new computer to restore your computer to a factory state, but this is not that. A more appropriate name would be “Windows repair disc”.
To be blunt, this tool creates merely a slimmed-down Windows installation disc. It takes a normal Windows installation disc image and strips out all the “installation” functionality leaving only the repair tools and common system files.
What a lot of people don’t know (or need to know) is that their Windows Vista DVDs are in fact running Windows PE, an extremely lightweight version of Windows that can be booted from removable media for the purpose of system maintenance. Up until now, creating a Windows PE image was not an easy task. This tool basically simplifies it down to just two clicks.
You can find the tool in the “Start menu” > “All programs” > “Maintenance” > “Create a Recovery Disc”. You will need either a blank CD or DVD along with your original Windows installation disc. It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
If you boot this CD/DVD, it will look identical to your Windows installation disc. You will be asked to choose a language and even present you the “Install now” button. If you do decide to go on, you won’t get very far before an error stops you.
To enter the Windows Recovery Environment, click the “Repair your computer” link at the bottom of the welcome screen and select the Windows partition you wish to repair. After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt. This is identical to the repair screen you would see in your installation disk. From here, you can even do a literally last-minute backup by sticking in a USB flash drive and copy documents across. Because it runs Windows, most USB drivers are available and it’ll work out of the box.
Because this is not an actual Windows install disk, it only takes up a few hundred MBs to fit on a CD, and you are free to make as many copies as you like and even share it with others. It’ll be even better if you can create a bootable USB version.

i bet that this will be the most used utility considering just how flaky vista actually
is for a majority of people who have it.
used vista for a few days, formatted the drive and reinstalled xp fresh. i dont see any
point of making a recovery disc
sorry to inform you, but this already exist, just check microsoft download for winpe 2.o.

that sounds fishy to me!
my fricken vista kept crashed and makeing the file sytem corrupt, im installing xp
ultimate october now!
i am really, really trying to get use to vista for the simple reasons that i don't much
of a choice to learn and understand it. i got clients want to upgrade to vista or buying
new computers with vista on it. personally i hate it. it is a waste of money and to say
everything they say its crap. not getting any better performance at all. it is an
illusion. we are so use to windows xp that suddenly people going to vista and they say way
better performance. well maybe it is but if you check what you had to buy to make vista
work of course it is going to be more better. you probably had to buy new rams or new
machine. put windows xp on that, i bet you will notice how fast it goes. vista for me is
another tactic of getting more money from consumers like they did in the old days for
windows me.
people go crazy on so call new tools, new skin or just for the fact
there is a new version of windows that seem that people just got to have it, if not they
are majorly outdated.
for me to see microsoft making a new sp3 for windows xp it
just tell me that flat out it is the best windows they ever created beside windows 2000.
solid, strong and no crap on it.
vista just got slap by xp by saying: i am not gone
yet! sp3 is around the corner.
only way vista will be able to slap back with the
sp1. and that will have to be a major new fix for the all the problems people are
experiencing with vista.
i peronally don't have any issue with vista since it waa first released.
my
pc:
intel core dual 2 3.4ghz, 3 gigs ram, 1024 gigs hard disk, 512m graphic card, and
has xp pro, advanced 2003 r2, vista ultimate, linux (crap), mac(crap)
windows vista is indeeg a resouce hog . :) but all the little kids want it . so its ok.
the market as to go around :) or we would still be using 10 yr old pcs :) and by the way
linux is not crap. ur just to dumb to understand it :d
uau i really do not know how to write :d
