Vista is a Zombie?
section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 29.9.2007
After Don Reisinger's rant over at CNet News it's now eWeek's Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols jumping on the Windows XP Extended Stay bandwagon.
I thought I'd mention that it's not unusual for Microsoft to extend its (OEM) support for older Operating Systems. It happened with Windows 2000, NT and all the 9x variants, well except for Windows ME (anyone remember that?).
Maybe, just maybe it has something to do with Vista Basic PC's? Because in all honesty Microsoft doesn't do itself any favors by releasing something that "looks" worse than XP on low end PC's. Add to the fact that XP has had 6 years to establish itself and became a very reliable OS after SP2 (Service Pack 2).
Windows Vista probably won't be widely adopted until the release of SP1 (and that is mainly in the business sector only). This is standard practice.
It's only fair to mention that the mass exodus to Windows XP was mainly due to the fact that it became the first fully 32 bit client OS after Windows 2000 which was designed for the business sector and not shipped on (OEM) consumer PC's. Due to the wide success and adoption of Windows 2000, XP was built on top of that very reliable kernel. Vista is simply an upgrade, whereas XP was a totally new OS. Upgrading now is not a necessity in many cases for consumers.
Anyway, enough from me, if you want another laugh click Read more to enjoy yet another "expert" opinion on Vista.
Opinion: Vista has turned into the desktop operating system no one wants, and even Microsoft is beginning to get it.
Today, I think of Vista as the zombie operating system. It stumbles around, and from a distance you might think it's alive, but close up it's the walking dead.
The first sign that Vista was in real trouble was when major vendors started to offer XP again on new machines. In February, Microsoft insisted it had already sold more than 20 million copies of Windows Vista. Oh yeah, like there were actually 20 million copies of Vista already out there and running. Pull the other leg, it's got bells on.
If Vista was doing great, then why did Dell break ranks with the other major OEMs to start offering XP again and become the first top-tier vendor to offer XP in replacement for Vista in April? Adding insult to injury, Dell actually had the effrontery to offer desktop Linux to its customers.
Other OEMs followed Dell's lead, or to be more precise, its customers' demands. Lenovo, for example, when it rolled out its revamped high-end ThinkPad T61p workstation notebooks in July, made a point of offering not just Vista but XP Pro and, yes, several Linux distributions, including Novell's SUSE, Red Hat and Turbo Linux.
So it came as no surprise at all to me when Mike Nash, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Windows product management, announced that, due to OEM demand, Microsoft will keep selling XP until June 2008. Of course, he also claims there is little chance the June 30 date will be extended.

give credit where credits due. windows me introduced system restore!
that is
all.
the reason why some vendors still want xp pro is because it can connect to domain
networks whereas most of the vista variants are home/premium and those cant connect to
domain networks. only vista business and ultimate do.
windows vista may have not the expectations after almost 5 yrs of development, but it by
far the most stable os ms has ever released. whether it's worth the money, is another
issue.
pff i am getting very tired of all the vista bashing that's been going on lately..if you
do not want to use it do not use it !! okay vista is maybe not what every one expected ,
just leave at that i don't have to hear the same tune 3 times a day 7 days a week ..
what's rather ironic though is that the web is literally flooded wiht vista
transformation packs for xp (not only cosmetic transformation) and that people are jumping
on those packs as bloodcrazed hyenas .. nuff said : if your happy with xp stay on xp , if
you want to give vista an honest try by all means do, just don't follow the hype and
start bitching about vista the first 2 seconds you use it.
richo is dead on. windows me introduced system restore. there's a lot to be said for
that.
i´m so freak tired of all this crap story about vista.. come on, anyone can believe those
stories is payed articles made by ridiculous "journalists"?
of course vista is a zombie since it'll eat your brains....
the simple path to follow is to ignore vista with a vengance. i tried all of the flavors
of vista on a trial basis some time ago. i found that none of them met my needs and
re-installed xp professional which does meet my needs. vista just may work out if you are
a newbie where computers are concerned. if you are not a newbie, go with xp. it is the
best thing out there.
i gave vista 6 months and was very excited about it since it's beta was released. while
it's very stable and very nice looking. it is also very resource intensive and uac is
nothing more than annoying. also it has had serious issues with sound card makers. a lot
of those issues have been worked out but not all of them. people like myself that record
music can't. i had no choice but to go back to xp.
had microsoft did a few
things differently with vista it would've been a hit. vista won't make it very long
because most people won't adopt it. especially with all the talk about people switching
back to xp. i think ms will learn from the mistakes of vista and make windows 7 a hit.
with vista transformation packs peopple add the good looks of vista to xp. join vista
good looks with xp compatibility and stability and you have the best of 2 worlds in 1.
vista users are like those gas guzzling hummer users, they tell you they are very happy
with it, but they wish they never buy it...
cgc just use your os or sell your computer and do some gardening.
vista is the best
os ever. never go to xp. cgc do some gardening.
people who don't know how to use a computer use vista.
as i've experience,, using vtp is a suicidal move,, you can kill your truly responsive
xp to a vista loolk a like zombie
some vtp replace xp system files and emulate
vista files which result to data incopatibility over xp machine.. system files are
being patched with vista beta file.
so if you want to use both.. install both
xp for reliable usage and vista for flashy desktop
i use to be a vista fanboy, but then i got wise. vista is utter junk, when will vista
users get it, they are flogging a dead horse.
life is 2 short 2 use windows...
i life spent on a windows machine is one
spent in darkness...a very lonely darkness...a harbinger of death is what it is.
look at it like this, vista is like me. its the junk before the good os.
sooner or later they will have to discontinue xp sales. they have not invested millions
in r&d on vista to keep selling xp. it will be forced fed to you sooner or later. bill
rules you don't!
