Microsoft Confirms Windows XP SP3

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 31.7.2007

The second service pack (SP 2) for Windows XP was a watershed release. Dropped in August 2004, it addressed a number of issues on the security side: turning Windows Firewall on, rather than off, by default, and including a pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer were two of the major changes.

Those upgrades made a big difference in the public perception of XP, and sales, which had been steady, took off.

As analyst Matt Rosoff of independent research company Directions on Microsoft said for a recent story, "People came on board with XP SP2. It's efficient; all the drivers are there; it works as it's supposed to work. It's been out five years now."

Indeed, it works so well that it's cutting into Windows Vista business. Given XP's continued strength, it makes sense that Microsoft continues to support it, and it appears it will do so with SP3, which is scheduled to make an appearance in the first half of next year.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is releasing few details about the service pack. According to an e-mail from a Microsoft spokesperson, "We're currently planning to deliver SP3 for Windows XP in the first half of CY2008. This date is preliminary, and we don't have any more details to share at this time."

Several questions to Microsoft were left unanswered, including any timeline for beta releases, either public or private; new features, fixes or upgrades; and whether SP3 is a response to XP's continued market strength.

However, in a May 21 press release about security protocols, Microsoft anticipated SP3 availability in 2007: "Microsoft is announcing that Windows Vista supports this protocol today and Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) will support it as well later this year."

Redmond magazine columnist Mary Jo Foley reported recently that Microsoft called that statement a "typo," giving new meaning to the word.

XP SP1 was released in September 2002, less than a year from the product's launch, and slightly less than two years between SP1 and SP2. If SP3 meets the current launch window, it will be approximately four years between the latest service packs.

There has been talk off and on over the past several years about Microsoft killing SP3. But given the latest pronouncements, and XP's surprising staying power, it seems clear that SP3 will become a reality. The only question now is when.

hmmmmm interesting..

I don't think so

By whocares on 01.08.2007 - 10:08
vista isn't selling well and hardware manifacture are trying to undermine ms by giving poor driver support (ever wondered why it takes 6 month and more to rewrite a driver for vista?). most drivers are just the old betas renamed, and if you do a binary check you could even find old xp drivers (some netgear wifi stuff). on the other side vista is sold with every laptop and prebuilt pcs so we're gonna pay for something that's not yet ready to work.
damn, we are paying betatesters. for those living in the usa i think its time for a class action (if they can start one for the iphone battery, they can start one for preinstalled os on pcs.
regards.

SP3...

By Vash on 01.08.2007 - 11:08
i hope that the sp3 will be a true service pack, and not a patch to sink xp... if you know what i mean...

sp3...or sp1?

By kj on 01.08.2007 - 15:08
i think consumers may choose vista sp1 over xp sp3 as they are coming out around the same time. most people are waitin for vista sp1 so sales might take off then and xp sp3 could be a waste of time.

i'll waiting

...simple talk, harded make.....one more day ms uploads sp3(or vista sp1) probably i'll buy new ms os named richmond or vienna. xp still more stable than vista. i have both os and since first day the same vista drivers problems. for what good(?)os without drivers- music keyboard, pro audio card. who's fault? ms or third company. maybe it's time to change? i mean mac.

Vista driver issue

By bob on 01.08.2007 - 23:08
the driver issues with vista are the drm requirements for tilt bit checking, and probably direct x10 compatibility. these requirements cause the hardware people to maintain 2 code bases. xp is more widely used so they will support that code first. ms sold us out for the content industry with that tilt bit crap.

and...

i make my own music on pc then i mean on pure mac - without his lover intel. you think is too late for changes? probably you're right on music soft (and revers placed buttons) but really?

SP1, SP2 and SP3

By Not another Op on 02.08.2007 - 00:08
all these sp are just fixups from all the f-ups that ms did and trying to fix due to all the complain they get.as for now sp3 for xp is just a bump-up for xp to keep up with vista so it can be backwards compatable/incompatable operating system.

Don't You want more Choices & more Competitions?

By Star-Girl 1/3 on 02.08.2007 - 16:08
why are so many apple haters when microsoft products and windows emperors bill & steve dominate 97% of the world market and tiny apple only has 3% of the markets?
why are apple products and mac os/x so threaten to the apple haters?

i would like to have more choices and more competitions when unix/linux, mac os/x and microsoft windows each has 30% and other has 10% shares of the market.

don't you want to have more choices?

Come On Down XP SP3!

OSX vs XP\Vista

By Inconvenient Truth on 02.08.2007 - 20:08
macs osx is for creative people whom the computer is a good looking, highly functional vehicle that gets them from place to place in style and on time. windows is for socially non-functional dullards not interested in a destination but rather something to complain and fuss about to give them an artificial sense of "being somebody with an opinion". sorry, but it's true.

OSX vs XP\Vista

By Inconvenient Truth on 02.08.2007 - 20:08
and apparently, there are alot of people like the latter which is why the world is in such bad shape!

uh, what?

By A real user on 02.08.2007 - 21:08
both a pc and a mac can be a ""good looking, highly functional vehicle that gets them from place to place in style and on time"" so i have no idea where you were going with that one. second, you're obviously another one of those moronic osx users who needs things to look good to function for them. sounds like a personal problem to me. if you can't handle the 'extreme' complexity of a pc(sarcasm), you better stick to your day job (if you have one you hippie mac fanboi)

ps: i have a mac and a pc, both have their uses.

Why release it ?

By DCRJ on 03.08.2007 - 04:08
i thought microsoft is pushing vista to be the o.s. of the new era then why release a sp3 for the xp ?

Vista

By Not Another Op on 03.08.2007 - 04:08
because vista is not all that as microsoft hoped for, just another pretty little face on the market and xp at the moment seems to run a little bit more stable but it still has it's ups and downs to time, however, sp3 is suppose to once again make xp and vista backward compatable but i call it the compatable/incompatable software you will ever get. i'll stick to xp however, if i keep getting erros or crashes, then i'll revert back to windows 3.11. seems to be more stable, well... at that time.. lol

with fu...ll working applications

By Ben on 03.08.2007 - 18:08
one and only good os is solaris (sun). lindows (brasil) is better than ms windows..etc. anyway-ms!! gimmie sp3 or good vorking vista!!!!!
sell us the best one os for all!!

My take on it is this:

By Ac3-T on 06.08.2007 - 14:08
i think xp sp3 will be for all of those celeron's with only 512- 1024 mb's of ram, which is conciderably slow by comparison to core2 duo / quad with +2048 mb's of ram.
i myself have a p4 1.8 ghz, 512 mb ram, so although i can run vista, i do best at running xp. ok, so i'm un- modern, sue me! but there's a lot more to be done to correct vista, and ffs, they just have to fixa all those "warnings"- dialogues away... it's unbearable. tried vista for a few hours.. looks neat and all, but it's to god damn slow to do anything =0/

Welcome both of SP's

By Hacker?pcs on 09.08.2007 - 03:08
i have vista ultimate build 6000 and xp sp2 build 2600 rtm both installed and i am ready to install them. and the issue with drivers and compatibility: about drivers i think you can put the driver installator file in compatibility mode for xp sp2 and that's all. i installed an 1998 sound card in vista with that way. fukc yourself and shut up you all. vista is a good os, not "the best windows ever existed"(bill gates), but a good os. fukc yourself and shut up you all.

By Mike on 24.08.2007 - 20:08
you do realize your processor is shit, so you are lying, no one with those graphics cards and that much ram would have such a shit processor, your processor cannot overclock that high at all and it even has trouble video encoding.

judging by the look of your typing, i would also believe that you are a 6 year old boy that has learned some new words and have just been given the internet.

By ~~robin~~ on 25.08.2007 - 12:08
lol!!!!!!!!

8gb of ram with that junk of processor?

you have got to be joking i have seen people lie about their specs before but this is laughable.
