Microsoft has applauded Vista from the get go as the most secure Windows platform, but according to a comparison put together by Jeff Jones, Security Strategy Director in Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing group, the status quo is also valid for rival operating systems.

Windows XP, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Workstation, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, Apple Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger and Windows Vista are the operating systems evaluated by Jones. At the bottom of this article, you will be able to find graphics with details of the comparison.

Additionally, you can also access the .pdf version of the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report authored by Jeff Jones.

"Windows Vista holds up well in this comparison, showing a significantly improved vulnerability profile over its first 180 days of availability compared to Windows XP and the other operating systems that were examined.

It’s interesting to note that Windows Vista is being subjected to a greater level of scrutiny than its predecessor, as tools used by security researchers have become significantly more sophisticated since Windows XP was released," revealed Austin Wilson of Microsoft’s Windows Client Group.

still internet explorer is a s**t, still malwares spywares... i use firefox, and when i sometimes need to come back to ie, tons of windows appears and it makes me so f*****g sick... you still need an antivirus and antispyware, it s always gonna be windows... in the other systemes, you need nothing, so better use linux or mac!uac is so stressing, you should stay on xp it's way better there's no uac...

chill

Let's face it

By JJ Richards on 23.06.2007 - 21:06
let's face the reality shall we?

windows is where it's at, sure it ain't secure when compared to other o/s's but it offers gaming/business/personal use whilst the others do the business and personal computing well, gaming is what lacks plus the support is with msft.

i use vista and xp on different pc's all the time, uac is no longer an issue for me with vista because i'm using vista ultimate and deleted the pseudo 'administrator' account vista creates at the beginning allowing me to use the real full blown admin account without the "are you sure" bs every 10 seconds.

firefox on a windows based o/s isn't safe from malware or spyware either, where you got the idea that it was is beyond me.

i run these scans weekly;

http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ (works with firefox also)

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

i use internet explorer 7 for these links but each one finds something the other may not, do yourself a favor and try it out and see for yourself.

if you use ie and.. "tons of windows" appears, just stop surfing bad p0rn sites-_-

messed up?

By core2extreme on 24.06.2007 - 05:06
if you get tons of windows, maybe consider re-installing a clean copy of windows? and if you wanna go on p0rn sites, just use something like virtual pc

8 scanners?

By Bosse on 24.06.2007 - 12:06
running 8 different scanners weekly? you most have a tons of adualt sites in your bookmarks. mayby you open them all at once every morning? :)

a good exemple 8 scanners

By bloody on 24.06.2007 - 18:06
you see what i am saying now, the guy use 8 scanners, you don"t need this on mac... so how can vista be more secure than others? it's not that i don't like windows, i use it but the fact that it's safer than the others is not true

I don't use Anti-Spyware Software

By Ericko on 25.06.2007 - 06:06
the only thing i use is 1 av, and that's it, i don't use anti-spyware programs because i don't need them. i think windows could be better, but it is not that bad, you just need to know what you are doing.

I don't use all those scanners

By none on 26.06.2007 - 09:06
you only get viruses in vista by downloading pr0n and warez. if you're a "normal" user, your exposure is pretty low.

google for shieldsup https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and do full port scan, check the results and then talk about secure system. on my xp, antivirus/firewall takes as much ram as the rest of the system.
