More than 20 million copies of Windows Vista were sold globally in February 2007, the first month of sales since its widespread consumer release.

More than 20 million copies of Windows Vista were sold globally in February 2007, the first month of sales since its widespread consumer release.

That is significantly more than the 17 million copies of Windows XP that were sold in the first two months following its release in October 2001, Kevin Kutz, a director in Microsoft's Windows client group, told eWEEK in an interview on March 26.

"These sales figures reflect global sales from retail, PC manufacturers and the Express Upgrade program, and indicate that we are on track to more than double the initial pace of sales for Windows XP, and for Vista to become the fastest adopted version of Windows ever," he said.

While Kutz declined to break down the numbers by region or even for each of the six Vista editions, he did say that sales were strong across the globe and that many of Vista's sales came through people buying new PCs.

"Sales of the premium editions were also strong," he added.

These sales figures were compiled by Microsoft based on sales reports from its retail and PC manufacturers over the period, as well as from the Express Upgrade program.

But Microsoft-Watch is reporting that the numbers just do not add up.

"By every reasonable measure — PCs and retail boxed sales — Microsoft's numbers simply do not add up to the 20 million figure in one month," it says.

However, some Microsoft hardware partners, such as Dell, are seeing strong interest in the premium versions of Vista.

"Since the launch of Windows Vista, Dell consumer customers have overwhelmingly chosen premium versions of the operating system that enable them to have a richer experience with music, video, photography and other computing applications they choose," Neil Hand, the vice president of Dell's Consumer Product Group, said in a statement.

Microsoft is expected to disclose more regional and version sales details when it releases its quarterly financial figures in late April.

Some analysts have said that the new anti-piracy and validation tools that Microsoft is shipping with Vista and Longhorn Server will help ensure there will be little corporate uptake of these operating systems in 2007.

Kutz did acknowledge that, historically, there tended to be a rush of sales immediately after a product's launch, which varied according to the time of year.

Forced to buy Vista

By consumer on 27.03.2007 - 18:03
go to dell and try to buy a computer as a home user. your only choice is vista. same with all the other oems. strong sales due to forcing the new home computer buyer to take vista. now if you are a corp, you can still get xp pro. why do they get a choice and not the consumer? corps want xp, not vista and have the $$$ to back up their demand for it. poor consumer has no choice but to take vista with no ky to ease the insertion pain.

Sure..

i would say citing the article:

"since the launch of windows vista, dell consumer customers have been forced to have premium versions of the operating system that enable them to have a richer experience with music, video, photography and other computing applications they choose," along with all the bloatware that dell includes on their pre_installed versions of vista.

Vista Sales not so strong

By exorcist on 27.03.2007 - 20:03
they may have sold more copies of vista in 2007 than winxp in 2001 but there is probably 50x more people with pc's now and some people have both a pc and laptop so the figures mean nothing, as a percentage it is probably not that good.

no offense (since this is a news site) but i believe microsoft paid news sites to say they have huge sales and all that s*it. i don't believe it cause even my grandma thinks "vistas slow" and shes not slow.

microsoft is knowing their going down and they lie to stay on the top.

just like wpa and their "anti-piracy protection" are nothing more then system to control innocent legitimate consumers into paying for a bunch of copies of windows xp/vista and even more then they legally need. when a customer pays hard earned money for xp and wants to put it in 2 or 3 computers they own they have a right to install it in all of them.

think of it when you buy a dvd the riaa/mpaa doesn't say you can only play it in 1 dvd player, you can play it on as many as you want. when you buy a playstation game sony doesn't say "you can only play it on 1 ps console".

microsoft is a conning, scamming, liar.

check microscum.com and see the bs they do.

Microsoft is controling their products too much

By A victim on 27.03.2007 - 20:03
you know a reason why i """crack""" """windows xp activation""". because i legally own a copy and it's genuine from a retail store but micros#it told me you can only activate it on 1 computer. wtf i pay for xp and i get bs.

i minus well pirate instead of buying their wpa infested products.
see bill shates activation increases piracy. it does increase piracy and cracking.

you didn't think about that but only wanting to control ur legitimate users till they learn how to crack wpa too.

you lost m$$$$$. you need to learn innocent people will buy your copies and you need to learn to trust them microsoft instead of treating them like criminals.

i totally agree with a victim of m$h!t. m$ are going down so much so they have to stoop so low as to float a boat along the river past the ps3 launch site in france and put chairs outside virgin megastore in london with a url to a silly childish comment. grow up m$. sony ps3 fastest selling console in uk history fact and its not even a xmas rush.

vista strong sales

By harvi on 27.03.2007 - 23:03
i bet the "strong" sales of vista are the cracked oem versions asking for updates from microsoft. it may be the way microsoft tells how many copies have been sold.ha ha

Use it or buy it
