Microsoft: Windows Vista Safer than OS X, Linux

Microsoft security strategy director Jeff Jones this week published a report comparing the security vulnerability profile for various high-profile operating systems in the 90 days of their existence.

Surprisingly, Vista came out in front: Vista had 5 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, one of them fixed, and one pending with a High severity rating. By comparison, XP had a total of 17 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High, when it shipped in 2001.

The surprises, however, come when you compare the non-Microsoft competition. Mac OS X 10.4, a darling of the press, actually suffered from 20 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High. Worse, OS X 10.4 still suffered from 17 publicly disclosed but unpatched vulnerabilities at the end of those 90 days. "The data doesn't support [Apple's] marketing," Jones writes.

Linux fared even worse: Ubuntu 6.06 suffered from a whopping 71 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 27 of those rated High. And there were at least 29 unpatched vulnerabilities in that OS after the 90 day period ended. And so on. You can read the entire report (PDF), and look forward, as I am, to Jones' 6-month and 1-year updates.

to the guy above me. i was never really interested in involving myself into the giants clash. frankly what you and i think or say doesn't matter or make a difference in cases of such giant companies.

but i would like to say that i've been using vista since it's release. and i haven't experienced any problems yet. and i haven't used any additional security software

Indeed safer

By Hangender on 26.03.2007 - 03:03
yes, vista might not be as safe as os x, however most people in the world use windows. therefore, the safeness of vista will have a lot more impact, and os x will just be os x no matter how secure it gets.

safer:P lmao

apple os x tiger rules. vista aint even close. and its way safer than microsoft

vista mass apeal and security

By netverse on 26.03.2007 - 08:03

@hagender and mort

you have a valid point... vista is attacked more and hackers really dont care about os x and linux distros hence their security is never tested to the extreme.. i must say vista is doing heck of a job considering this...

doesn't matter

By Maxicosy on 26.03.2007 - 12:03
it doesn't matter how many vulnerabilities you have in the first 90 days after release. it's far more important how many vulnerabilities you have after the first 90 days after the release ;-)

it's also important if hackers have been able to exploit the vulnerability or not.

it does matter

By Tagged on 26.03.2007 - 17:03
actually it does matter how many are found in the first 90 days. it tells a lot about the os and its security. a newly released piece of software will get greater attention than an older one, especially an os. having x amount of vulnerabilities detected in its first 90 days can lend a good estimate to the security aspect of that os and how easy it is to bypass or hack. continued support is important, but this does reveal a lot more than at first glance. i'm not saying vista is better than os x, unlike the fan boys who made themselves known by their useless posts i prefer to stand on the sideline and wait it out.

it doesn't matter

By me on 26.03.2007 - 19:03
os x could have 5 million vulnerabilities and it would still be safer, simply because no one cares about the 7 people who actually use it.

The diease ridden masses

By Wisdumb on 27.03.2007 - 00:03
msers, generally, are afraid to have an individual voice and vulnerable to peer pressure. they are the "the cowardly masses" who feel secure only in overpopulated anonymity. of course viruses spread through those mindless huddled masses like a wildfire in a heatwave. simple biology. they seek merely to survive, transcendence well beyond their grasp. "must wear tie...or else...else"

apple is for those brave enough to imagine and work towards a diviner future. the heroes journey. yes, there numbers will always be fewer because there are only so many valiant enough to overcome their fears for the greater good of all. but the satisfaction is oh so much greater! apple users seek to live life to it's fullest and beyond.

it's a quality vs quantity thing.

kind of like the population crisis - what's better, 7 billion people scavenging like mangey dogs or 1/2 a billion living in paradise?

'nuff said

it doesn't matter

By TC on 27.03.2007 - 14:03
it still cost to much period111111111111

That's meaningless

By Nick on 27.03.2007 - 17:03
so that is probably the only kind of ranking m$$$ found vista could remotely be some kind of little better than macos.

remember, vista is just quick-and-dirty-os version 7 with a fancy 3d ui.
