User reports shipping Vista is different from RTM

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 1.2.2007

ONE OF our readers already bought Vista OEM from Overclockers. He installed it and got back with a few first impressions. And he reckons that the OEM Vista is not the same as the RTM (release to manufacture) he tried before.

The DVD weighs in at exactly the same 2.49GB but the key activates the version you buy, in his case Vista Home OEM Premium edition. It installs in a respectable 25 minutes on his 3.0GHz Netburst Pentium 4 with 1GB of memory. He used an ATI X550 graphic card, passively cooled and it was able to run Aero well - on par with RTM performance. He reckons that this version is far more stable for him than the RTM he tried before.

The hardware gets automatically detected, at least most of it and our lad, Darren Powell of Manchester ,was impressed with the performance of Vista. Mind you he says, "After all, until DX10 hits, there is not really that much incentive to leave XP just yet."

Vista OEM Premium box

Overclockers sent out Corsair TurboFlash readyboost key 512MB to the lads who were kind enough to preorder the stuff. Unfortunately 512MB of USB memory doesn't boost performance that much.

You have to thank Darren for the experience and the pictures, as Microsoft still won't let me fiddle with Vista.

Verify???

By The CAT on 01.02.2007 - 22:02
can anyone else here who purchased vista do a file comparison of the two versions, i think we would all be interested to know what if anything has changed. thanks

would like to see if this is true

By SpoTtY DoGg on 01.02.2007 - 23:02
if this is the case then im sure microsoft have probably delt with most of the existing cracks ...so it looks like if this is true crackers will have to go back to the drawing board and find a new method...can you upload a torrent for us to check of the iso?

Not impressed

By dzjepp on 01.02.2007 - 23:02
i'm sorry, but that is not enough proof that the rtm version and the shipping retail versions are any different. his claim of "reckons that this version is far more stable for him" does not hold much merit as well as "was impressed with the performance of vista". was rtm never stable or fast? also, "the hardware gets automatically detected" - well this is exactly the same in rtm or a shipping version.

and lol at retailers selling these marketing ploys at faster vista performance with their flash drivers. real world performance will show you that the difference is very marginal, and with a measly 512mb stick, even less so. i hope you didn't pay a premium price for that stick because of it being labeled a "vista booster".

Comparison

By MKD on 02.02.2007 - 00:02
hi i originally downloaded bill gates release and then patched it to the final msdn version. the sha1 hash # is b71e04564ca22e4d9928e59298eff87cf62b382b. i have just purchased windows ultimate oem and this has exactly the same hash check. just thought i would let you guys know. what was meant by the copy being activated already. the only reason i can think is when the serial is put in when installing the person has not unticked the option to activate windows as soon as they are online box? or am i wrong??

Doesn't make sense

By StrangelyBrown on 02.02.2007 - 00:02
rtm went to manufacturers such as dell. dell and its customers would be very unhappy if their software, given to them ahead of time so that vista systems could be ready by jan. 30th, was 'not as good as' the retail version.

plus it takes lot of time just to stamp all those dvds and packaging together. they didn't have time to change the code as well.

i'm sure rtm and retail are exactly the same.

MSDN release is not identical to Retail (verified)

By Dime on 02.02.2007 - 01:02
rtm (msdn) and retail versions are different.. i have compared retail x86 files to rtm x86.. every files is same, except one ! the 2.x gb file on the dvd.. same with x64.. bu ti can assure you, only new drivers got added.. may be helpful, may not be helpful.. keep in mind, every driver is also downloadable somewhere on the net.. so you can stick with msdn release if you want

What a nonsense

By Carbone on 02.02.2007 - 02:02
wuuuhuuuhu, the rtm was the biggest

Rubbish!

By Oscar!! on 02.02.2007 - 02:02
that story is horse..it!! rubbish!!
performance is the same, and it depends solely on peripheral drivers, nothing more. i'm a happy man, with a free vista ultimate!!

whatever they say is just to scare and make us pay bucks for the same stuff!

DVD Label

By PowerPC on 02.02.2007 - 03:02
what is the dvd label of the box retail? also does it change with the version you have or are all versions the same?

the msdn label was lrmcfre_en_dvd. i don't know what that means though.

the size of the msdn is 2,678,614,016 bytes. that is 2.49gb

OH MY GOD

By fiTz on 02.02.2007 - 03:02
i used rtm for 3 months. with this version i got many small buggs (dummy files, full bin, etc.
be4 that, i used vista since rc1, downloaded every single build.

now i just installed retail build and yes it is different. the shitty bugs have disappeared, and im 100 percent sure other things have been changed :
ex : in folder options, ive got the thumbnail thingy at first.

i have still some drivers issues but w/e

By littleboy on 02.02.2007 - 04:02
the build is the same i think.

i also would like to get a retail box download. i guess it doesn't matter what version because all the dvd's are the same. it's the key that determines what gets installed. correct?

maybe newsgroups will have it soon. anyone know?

.....fiTz fiTz Your big bug....

windows vista x86 ultimate retail dvd

sha1sum: 5ecd1b7c296bee774957d36dd230dc7bdbae3b02
this copy is exactly the retail version, that someone added at demonoid.com.
and other detail infomation, click link below:
http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/901251/775222/

why should it be the same size

By whatever on 02.02.2007 - 17:02
the rtm should be bigger because you get the choice of any vista windows system. it has them all and you choose. the retail won't...makes sense

why should it be the same size

By PowerPC on 02.02.2007 - 17:02
i thought all the dvd's were that same in content, other than the packaging and the labels on the dvd. it's the key that determines what version gets installed.

Buid???????????????????

By Pirate on 02.02.2007 - 17:02
the only thing that will convence me that they are diferent is the build!!!

build???

Oh my god!!

By Oscar on 02.02.2007 - 20:02
some of you guys act like scared sheep.
sorry to be honest but it's true.

it just takes one little guy saying blah blah because he payed for a retail vista and then some of you start jumping like scared monkey trying to find the torrent to the retail vista.

they've just installed vista in some of the computers in the company i work for and i've been playing with it for a day so far.

i can guarantee you hands down that there is not even one difference between a payed version and the rtm you got from bill gates or msdn. it's the same exact buggy thing.

whatever you've heard is just to scare you or play doodoo.

seriously

stop this sh.t!!

TAKE IT!!

By Voila! on 02.02.2007 - 20:02
ok here is your retail, but it's the same exact thing.

OEM not RTM?

By joe on 02.02.2007 - 22:02
so this is the oem and not rtm download right?

no newer vistas out....

By crapguy on 03.02.2007 - 02:02
can't you read ?!

there is only one vista system - rtm/retail/oem from november 12 until the new manufactured disks :

it is all the same !!!

ms has not put a single "update" or "hotfix" or "goodies" in the vistas - what you buy now is the same what is on torrent for weeks.

and yes, there is only one damn dvd ( the 5 cds is the dvd just splitted into bootable parts ) - it has all editions on it, except enterprise edition ( which is ultimate minus mediastuff ) ...

fools will download now the same disk they already have ..

O RLY?

By mooeow on 03.02.2007 - 04:02
so many people denying they're different... you gotta admit it smells fishy!

I agree.....

By Tim on 03.02.2007 - 04:02
theres gotta be somethin different........maybe they added in more drivers????......i think keznews needs to do a comparison

Not different

By You R Wrong on 03.02.2007 - 07:02
rtm is the same as what you buy on the shelf. if you need more proof then you're not a very bright person.

go ahead and buy it or redownload what you already have and waste another dvd.

in the mean time i'll keep using rtm while you are reloading the same thing you just took off your hard drive.

NO WAI!!!

By Heh on 03.02.2007 - 07:02
that last comment reeks of "i'm attempting the best i can to discourage you in a not-so-subtle-but-trying-anyway way".

"waste another dvd"... boo-hoo! i'll mourn the loss of the 2 quarters it costs me!

and the sudden wave of people getting actually mad when denying/arguing/attempting to cover all of this up just makes it all more suspicious.

so yeah, i'll waste another dvd, i'll waste time installing it, and you'll waste time responding the same old sh*t. but i'd rather be sure than skeptical.

OEM have the Evaluation (no cdkey install)

By WEs on 03.02.2007 - 08:02
does the oem have the same ability to install with no cd key?

STOP THIS SH....

By Oscar on 03.02.2007 - 09:02
i said it once and i'll say it again

stop this sh.t!!

just friggin rumors and the weak sheep just go bananas to get the 2.53gb dvd.

i bet the extra 4 gigs are just malware and viruses and some of you are buying this plot.

stop this sh.t!!

DVD picture

By coheed on 03.02.2007 - 15:02
i tried to ask on demonoid
http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/901251/775222/
if they would upload a picture but i am not a member so i can't comment, would someone that is a member please ask for the high quality pic?

Well...

By Oscur on 03.02.2007 - 15:02
y'know oscar, you remind me of those riaa/mpaa/spa spammers on thepiratebay... getting just as angry as them trying to discourage people.

funny stuff...

Localised version

By blunden on 03.02.2007 - 17:02
i agree it would make little sense that they changed the retail from the rtm. however, when i installed the swedish retail version a week or so before official release, it felt a bit different. it had all updates already, which i find strange. i didn't have internet plugged in when installing (used stoptimer on one machine and legal msdn:aa on one) and since, unlike xp, the localised versions of vista are just the english ones with a full mui-pack to translate everything. that means the updates are exactly the same. still, the oldest updates were already on there and they doesn't show up in the list of updates installed. this is just an observation from the localised retail version. the english one is probably the same as rtm, otherwise window updates will probably fix that.

KezNews

i agree with tim. keznews needs to do a comparison to stop this once and for all

Retail Boot Screen

By MM on 03.02.2007 - 20:02
is there any difference in the boot screen between the retail and rtm? any kind of feedback is greatly appreciated...

i have it

By nl on 03.02.2007 - 21:02
i used a key from a shop version and i have activated a home premium version , only had to use the phone to activate it , go for it

comparing

By testing on 03.02.2007 - 23:02
if you check the 2000+ message demonoid torrent thread, you'll see that the person posted a md5 sum of the contents of his retail. if you run that like he suggests in ultraiso on a rtm, you'll get a exact match. neither image has more files than the other. so... if his is a real retail, then it is exactly the same as rtm.

SAME AS RTM

By yea on 04.02.2007 - 03:02
i reinstalled vista with demenoid. same thing, i used ccleaner and it detected the same registry errors. yea 100% its the same thing.

FINAL WORD ON TOPIC

By MS techstaff ;) on 04.02.2007 - 04:02
to all unbelievers !

like i said before i have via ms-technet direct subscription access to all new ms products, yes to the retail ones, including vista and ms i friendly enough to tell us the filesizes and hashes to avoid corrupted downloads - the editions i can download are in fact the absolute same as in stores - and here is the evidence i am talking no shit :

would you plz have a look at this screenie from ms vista download page - there you can see the filesize and hash:

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/9406/englishdvdre6.jpg

now compare these values to the rtm or oem editions of your pirated ones and you will see they are the same.

What is the DVD label ?

By PowerPC on 04.02.2007 - 05:02
what is the dvd label? is it the same as the rtm? someone must know.

vistas label

By MS tech Staff ;) on 04.02.2007 - 05:02
you mean the name of the dvd what windows says after you insert it ?

lrmcfre_en for english

lrmcfre_de for german

lrmcfre_nl for dutch

lrmcfre_gr for greek

and so on..

Installation

By foolala on 04.02.2007 - 09:02
in rtm, i got option for multiple version of vista to install. if it's 100% identical, then there should be no file size diff... and retail would also give you option to install ultimate (just that the key won't work later).... is that the case?

Then...

By Oscar on 04.02.2007 - 11:02
then...

stop this shit!!! no... really please.
stop this nonsense. rtm is the same.

now please close this thread, it drives me nuts. lol!!

i recently had the misfortune of installing and encountering ‘bullseye’
rogurremover installed these files. when i attempted to perform the usual remove program,
bullseye had the audacity to make me take a survey before it would go away.
attempts to circumvent the survey elicited admonishments from diabolical bullseye.
one question asked what one would consider a reasonable number of pop-up ads one should
receive in a month-of course ‘zero’ was not an option. these demons no, i shouldn’t insult demons
with these people-who write and distribute rogueremover with bullseye need to be gored and stomped by a bull!

Its the same

By James on 04.02.2007 - 14:02
i just got an upgrade vista home premium sent to me by acer for my new laptop , i never used the disc supplied . i used the rtm that i download many weeks ago and used the key that was supplied with with home premium upgrade and it installed with no problems .
so yeah the rtm is real and is the same as the retails :)

label

By PowerPC on 04.02.2007 - 17:02
so the label is also the same. btw what does lrmcfre stand for?
