How to activate Windows 7 RC build 7600, 7264, 7231 and olders

Vista upgrade invalidates your XP key

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 30.1.2007

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

If you choose to purchase an upgrade version of Windows Vista to upgrade XP, you will no longer be able to use that version of XP.

Either on another system, or as a dual-boot option. The key will be invalidated, preventing activation.

From Vista’s EULA found here (PDF) :

13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligiblefor the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.

For many people this may not be a problem, but it’s a change from earlier versions of Windows.

By Ywwsn on 30.01.2007 - 20:01
fu** off microsoft

Haha....GREED!!

By Real on 30.01.2007 - 22:01
no wonder people rip microsoft off every chance they get.

They ask for it

By M$ Pirate on 30.01.2007 - 22:01
i bought a copy of xp when i built my desktop, just cuz i wanted to do the right thing. however, when i tried to install after many problems, i could not activate! i spent 4 hours on the phone with several indians before deciding to download a crack. i have not looked back since. if they would make the software more user friendly, then they may not have permanently turned me to the dark side.

Who needs it?

By Jink on 31.01.2007 - 00:01
played with vista for 2 hours..got bored..removed the pretty bloatware. bye bye 6 years of wasted effort.

wow amazing

By webber on 31.01.2007 - 00:01
wow this is honestly a new low for microsoft...

How stupid

By Tz on 31.01.2007 - 00:01
i have a legal copy of xp and i have no problem using the activation crack on it whenever i reinstall it. i'm not crying to microsoft to let me activate it when i change my motherboard.

you can easily just use the activation crack on your 'invalid' key, lol.

Problem windows

By noodle on 31.01.2007 - 01:01
fix: mac os x, no cd keys, no activation.

Vista upgrade limitation workaround

By tesla on 31.01.2007 - 02:01
http://www.windowsitpro.com/article/...5011.html?ad=1

1. boot with the windows vista upgrade dvd.

2. click "install now."

3. do not enter a product key when prompted.

4. when prompted, select the vista product edition that you do have.

6. install vista normally.

7. once the install is complete, restart the dvd-based setup from within windows vista. perform an in-place upgrade.

8. enter your product key when prompted.

Recourse?

By Druidictus on 31.01.2007 - 02:01
is there any recourse? vista isn't a coplete operating system, yet microsoft is saying it is by its mere sale. is ms willing to pay compensation for user software that doesn't work?

the alternative is to allow people to flip between xp and vista. we know ms is trying to kill of any os that doesn't have drm, though...

Question!

By Mr. Burns on 31.01.2007 - 08:01
will my xp stop work if i'll install vista as a second os? i mean not upgrade version. i don't think so but i have to be sure.(sorry for my english)

NOT TRUE

By jackTladd on 31.01.2007 - 12:01
from xp eula:
upgrades. to use a product identified as an upgrade, you mustfirst be licensed for the product identified by microsoftas eligible for the upgrade. after upgrading, you may no longer use the product that formed the basis for your upgrade eligibility.
so what is different ,this article is scaremongering of the worse kind , we all have our reasons for hating microsoft , this basic clause has been used in most upgrade software . and it has never stopped us before .

FALSE

By Mark S on 31.01.2007 - 13:01
hi, this is not true at all. thanks for spreading fud.

False

By northener69 on 31.01.2007 - 16:01
i have xp on another drive and it still works. my vista may not work properly now due to updates but i don't care as i won't be buying it anyway.

i'm formatting it and getting rid of it. it's just xp with a new coat and a bigger price tag. another money making scam from the greediest company on the planet.

as long as there are pirates there is always hope!

Vista is ok

By James on 01.02.2007 - 11:02
i have had no issues with vista . everything works like it should so far :)

and in some ways its better than xp

Well you know

By Suck it on 01.02.2007 - 19:02
xxx yeah!

Vista is nice

By blunden on 01.02.2007 - 19:02
mr. bruns: of course you can dualboot vista and xp without problem. i even tripleboot vista, xp and ubuntu with the vista bootloader on my laptop.

i agree with james. it's working fine for me.

btw. it seems trendy to bash ms for no reason. if you don't like microsoft you can use another os. most functions work just fine in all other os:es.

serial number

By henk on 01.02.2007 - 19:02
who has an serialnumber for vista home

upgrade path

By krapphlat on 02.02.2007 - 23:02
this statement refers to an upgrade path only were by you choose to install upon a legitimate copy of xp etc etc.
basically it informs ms that it been upgraded and that the key and serial are no longer valid for that version of xp on your pc.
so you want to try vista and you choose the upgrade path and decide later you don’t want it so you reinstall xp with your cd-key it won’t be valid any more.

xp vlk key

By meme on 02.02.2007 - 23:02
i wonder if you can use an xp pro corp. vlk key to activate vista. anyone tried?

RE: xp vlk key

By n3cr0fil3 on 03.02.2007 - 07:02

By meme on 03.02.2007 - 13:02

Convert Upgrade Into Full Version..

By Xal on 03.02.2007 - 17:02
all you have to do is use vlite to make your upgrade disc bootable and install the os without your vista key. make sure you choose the version that you have purchased. ie - make sure you select home pre, ultinate etc if you have purchased that version. after you have vista installed go to the system info page and enter your vista key. worked for me.

Robert Cooper

By Marcin Kleczynski on 04.02.2007 - 12:02
i recently had the misfortune of installing and encountering ‘bullseye’
rogurremover installed these files. when i attempted to perform the usual remove program,
bullseye had the audacity to make me take a survey before it would go away.
attempts to circumvent the survey elicited admonishments from diabolical bullseye.
one question asked what one would consider a reasonable number of pop-up ads one should
receive in a month-of course ‘zero’ was not an option. these demons no, i shouldn’t insult demons
with these people-who write and distribute rogueremover with bullseye need to be gored and stomped by a bull!

Bashing Bill

By RugDog on 07.02.2007 - 02:02
bashing bill gates is not a "fad". what he has done to pc users is outright criminal. he has twisted capitalism into a monster. there is no other way to look at it than pure evil greed. profits are great. enormous profits are fine. "go exxon!!" exxon is not making us have to upgrade cars every few years because they change their gas. exxon is now telling us we can't put their gas in two different cars. they are not making us have to buy a new radio because the old radio won't work with the new gas in the tank. miami will party when castro dies...the world will party when gates does. long live gates, we all hate parties.

CORRECTION FOR ABOVE!!!

Vista Sucks

By Ubuntu RULES! on 18.02.2007 - 07:02
i have xp corp that never needs activating. i bought xp originally, but since i test so much software, i got tired of using all my activations up on an xp i bought.

no need to buy it, if you can't do what you want to it, right? that is why you buy it!

downloaded xp corp, never looked back. never needs activation, but found out there are 2 key types.

one kind, allows you to update from win 98, but no sp2, another lets you install sp2 but not upgrade.

so, i have both keys. i don't use sp2, but xxpid makes it easy to swap if i need to for testing.

XP updates harm Vista install?

By skully on 24.02.2007 - 02:02
veering off a bit......i read where microsoft was releasing an update to "foil" people who try to use a pirated copy of vista. my question is...is ther any known xp patch that would do the same to some trying to install pirated vista on a machine containing vista? i'm asking because i have a fully updated copy of xp, and have downloaded 3 seperate iso's of the rtm vista (bill gates) and each crap out at the same point of installation stating that my copy must be "corrupt".
been in this ms game for awhile, and the copies are not corrupt, and others report no issue. any thoughts? all have been burned on 3 seperate dvd burners on premium disks slow speed.

for above

By tay on 27.02.2007 - 17:02

and are you trying to install on xp? if so that might be you problem happend to me i just done a fresh install as in boot from the cd before xp loads up and it installed fine

By crimghost on 08.03.2007 - 06:03
when you buy a new tv is sony allowed to break into your house and steal the old one? what if you wanted to use it in your bedroom instead?.....
m$ doesn't/shouldn't have a legal right to do this either.

m$ should refund us for what we paid for XP then

By Solo on 08.03.2007 - 21:03
crimghost, your an idiot. ms is saying with the word upgrade that they 'take your old tv' and give you a 'new tv'. thats about the only thing that makes sense.
