Here is a rundown of some quick statistics comparing Windows 95 and Windows Vista. All prices are in USD.

All figures for Windows 95 seem to be verified and although there are sources for the Windows Vista figures, Microsoft has not officially confirmed them.

Windows 95 contained 11.2 million lines of code while Vista is believed to be at 50 million. Windows 95 had approximately 200 programmers while Vista supposedly had 2,000, according one Microsoft developer's blog.

The common retail price of Windows 95 was $89.95. The lowest amount you can pay for Vista (Home Basic Edition) is $99, and that’s an upgrade – the full retail version is more than double Windows 95’s price, $199. At the other extremity there is Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, ranging from $259 for the upgrade and $399 for the full. This of course, doesn't consider OEM prices, but I decided to do a little hunting. At mwave.com, Home Basic is priced at $89.90 while an OEM copy of Windows 95 is currently going for $19.95, but that isn’t exactly a fair comparison. Anyone remember the OEM price for Windows 95 when it was released?

Aples and Oranges

you probably shouldn't compare vista and win95 but vista and nt4.
and given you don't even mention inflation (10+ years isn't nothing) + with vista you don't just get an os but quite a bit of aditional software (mediaplayer with mpeg2 codec, mediacenter ... in the more expensive versions) this "comparison" is imho an aples and oranges thing ..

i dont think so... win95 was the "home edition" of nt4 and the home edition of vista is home basic ... thats the actual microsoft os for minimum claims ... so i think this comparaison is ok

win95 had absolutly nothing in common with nt4 whereas with vista the os part in the home versions is absolutlely identical to the part that all the professionals use (buiseness, enterprise, ultimate)
the only difference is the aditional software

so a "fair" comparison would be the cheapest vista (without all the extra software) with nt4 (which came with even less aditional software than the cheapest vista) + counting inflation which should at least increase the nt4 price by 25% (2% for 11 years)

ps: shure the retailversions are way too expensive - but i'm lucky enough to live in a country where everybody is free to buy the systembuilder editions which sell between 75 (home basic) and 165 euros (ultimate) - and since you are allowed to sell the thing again if you whant to switch from 32 to 64bit in the future, there's no real insentive to go for the retail version .. (in other countrys m$ can probalby force more unconvenient therms of use on their customers)
