Why Does Everyone Hate Microsoft?
section: microsoft, for your questions: KezNews forum, 15.12.2006
Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated driversI'm doing a short project on Microsoft and its impact on society.
A considerable part of this project has been looking into people's perceptions of Microsoft and the heavily negative bias of that perception. Since Slashdot is one of the world's forefront leaders on Microsoft hatred, I wanted to know: just why do you hate Microsoft? Please be as descriptive and as thorough as you like. Counter arguments and positive comments are also appreciated."

the primary reasons are:
1) microsoft's rapacious business practices. think netscape vs. ie, netware vs
m$ networking or even windows vs mac. people forget that microsoft almost put apple out of business a while
back, until steve jobs returned as chairman and had to ask his buddy bill gates for a loan.
2) related
to (1) above microsoft's usage of its tremendous market penetration to set standards that are beneficial to
itself. think c# vs java. ad vs openldap.
i think it's mainly that they have a monopoly position, and they are using it in a bad way.
i think greed springs to mind selling something so buggy for so much! they could sell win vista for 40-50 uk
pounds and still rake it in big time because most people would buy it rather than try and pirate it!
most likely because of wga, and preventing pirated pc. and trying to be the best company in the block
1. they are like gangsters of software they even believe that gnu software is "comunism" (words of balmer)
2. im an it in my country 8 years of experience on mostly micorsoft architectures and i can not
mention one single product from microsoft that works as it should.
sorry for my clumsy english
they are ignorant.
they charge way too much money for their software. if it were a fair price there would be no piracy. vista
is way overpriced, much more so than xp. anyone who defends this is a liar and a thief.
microsoft can
kiss my ass.
- they sell softwares at bloated prices
- their aggressive business practices
- they dont allow us
to pirate! dang!
- im not as rich as bill gates- couldt even afford a nintendo ds
why not...
greed and world domination!
bill gates is like stalin calling gw bush a dictator. it takes one to know one! gates is the world's biggest
pirate. many lawsuits lost every year. the devil's superstar!
i know i'm going to get flamed for saying this, but i have always loved microsoft and their products far more
than open source products. ("my linux server never crashes as long as i don't install this or that and
don't run these aps!" i love the fact that although microsoft products may malfunction from time to time,
for the most part they will work.) as for their business practices, i see no problem with them amalgamating
small businesses and putting their ideas into their own software, thereby bringing this software (or at least
their version of it) to a customer base much larger than it would have been.
the only reason
why i won't ever buy microsoft products is because of the inflated price. the only way that they can make
money selling an office suite for hundreds of dollars (when there are perfectly good free programs) is that
they are preying on the ignorance of their consumers. ask any random person on the street if they know what
office suites are available besides microsoft's offerings, and you're likely to get a blank stare. yes,
this is due to microsoft's monopoly, but for open source programs to have any amount of effective
advertising, they would need money, and that would mean costs... i'd much rather just have microsoft giving
the ignorant what they need and are willing ot pay to get; if one day they decide that they don't like paying
they can always put in a minimal amount of effort to find out what we already know, then make their own
choice.
one thing i'd also liek to mention is how ignorant are these people who pay for
microsoft's software. well, only microsoft could come up with the idea to disable the ability to run .exe
files recieved vie email in outlook. and it makes me squirm every time i download a file on my dad's pc and
get a warning, something along the lines of 'this file is executable therefore it may be a virus'. wow, way
to assume our incompetence. maybe we should just delete all the existing executable files on our system while
we're at it, eh microsoft? oh wait, you've conveniently hidden our file extensions from us as well. thank
you for protecting us! so yes, it is a hassle having to disable these services every time i wipe my drive,
but hey, i'd rather have windows with all of its available software than linux with virtually no options.
