Pirated Vista may be useless, Microsoft says

Microsoft said supposedly pirated copies of its new Vista computer operating system "will be of limited value" to those who use them.

Microsoft responded Tuesday to reports that some Web sites have been circulating pirated copies of Vista and the Office 2007 applications suite.

The pirated Vista comes with a product key that users can enter to activate a version of the products on their computers without paying for them, according to a report on the Web site of The Sydney (Australia) Morning Herald newspaper. A product key is a unique serial number tied to each package of a software product.

A second download, called an "activation crack," can then be applied that bypasses the activation process intended to guarantee that the Vista OS being downloaded is legitimate, the Herald reported. Pirated copies of Office 2007 can be downloaded just with the product key with no second activation code required.

But Microsoft said in a prepared statement that those pirated copies of the OS won't work for long.

"The copies available for download are not final code and users should avoid unauthorized copies which could be incomplete or tampered. This unauthorized download relies on the use of pre-RTM [release-to-manufacture] activation keys that will be blocked using Microsoft’s Software Protection Platform. Consequently, these downloads will be of limited value," the statement said.

Microsoft is still looking into reports of pirated versions of Office 2007 and declined further comment.

"Microsoft is happy that customers are eager to begin using Windows Vista," the company said.

Microsoft has been criticized for multiple delays in bringing Vista to market, but has said it wants to take care that the product is designed correctly to avoid security flaws, piracy problems and other software glitches.

The company released Vista to computer manufacturers Nov. 8 for them to build into new laptops and desktops available for retail sale in January 2007. Consumers can start buying individual copies of Vista on Jan. 30.

Microsoft also plans to have Vista in the hands of business customers by the end of November. It has scheduled a Vista launch event in New York City on Nov. 30 at which the new Office 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 will also be introduced.

My Two Sense...

By William H. Bush on 16.11.2006 - 05:11
don't believe everything you hear. first, it's only a matter of time ahead when xp becomes a "windows live usb" which you can just plug into any usb port soon. secondly, the bill gates vista works just fine, apply the msdn patch, and yor good for 30 days, which leaves only the activation method to be cracked. does anyone think this cannot be resolved?

remember xp in russia? they produced the first keygen, that resolved this... in 2001.

now in china, they already have some of the vista source code, so it's only a matter of reverse engineering. let's be honest, it's it time there was a method for everyone to add value and content to their computers, that is to help each other rather than continuing to pay gates his multiple of billions of dollars?

why should the world need to afford gate some 50 billion per a year income? even your us american president doesn't earn this much money, and yet he fights the war on terrorism...

sorry, but nobody needs an 50 billon dollar plus income. this is exploitation of the society and people to be held in by a monopoly, which locks in end users.

think of all the contributions of developing society if everyone is allowed to contribute, rather than to be all told, the source code is owned only by microsoft.

did you read their eula? then you already know, you don't have any rights, but to pay microsoft corporation for their software licensing system.

wake up "windows users" boycott microsoft and develop linux, so your not forced to submit your rights away for their so called lacking security.

yes, i am tired of having to hear how great windows is, when in fact it sucks, as first their software isn't secure, and secondly it's not built for society but for making profit of the society.

money shouldn't be the most important subject, as our life and the environment are truly more important. once everyone allows cooperation and cooperations to lay in bed with each other, their bottom line is nothing more than their greed for making profits for the share holders of stock.

if the air you breathe is polluted due to greed, do you care? would your children care?

all this ipr is crap, it's nothing more than capitalism!!!

if capitalism so good, then why is the us so much in debt? why is it so many americans are in debt? and why is it in that america is falling apart, as the political government is controlled by the cooperations, which favor only caring about making more money as who's cost and expense?

in the end everyone will ask, how did all this happen... because everyone bought and paid for capitalism, instead of supporting the people, benefiting the society instead.

sure they will tell you, it has nothing to do with anything, just keep paying them, and always agree with their ideology even when like the frog in a pot of water is boiling you continue to sit there...

al gore is right, there is a global warming, but these corportations only listen to consumers buying their crap. time to change, time to boycott corporations until they submit to our truly sustainable values, including morals!

god is great...

wow, man!!!! u rock!!! absolutely agree with you!! ;-)

Vista

By From brazil! on 16.11.2006 - 22:11
i dont agree with william!

the programers worked hard in vista, and they deserve to be paid!

no one needs to go on windows plataforms, it´s a free world!

but one thing u can be sure, thousands of users love windows, myself included, and we will be excited about every new so created by bill and his friends. he is rich, but he deserves that! we live in a free world, have a great idea, sell it, and make fortune! every one can do that.

as for me, i live in a poor country(brazil) and i dont have much money...for me vista is expensive, so i ´ve downloaded it... but if my salaries were in dollar($), not in "reais"(my country poor money), i would be glad to buy a copy of vista. we must not forget that the programers worked hard in this one guys...imagine a world just with linux!!! that great shit it would be...

By tihsamikah on 17.11.2006 - 01:11
why is ok for you to download it cos you say your *poor*...well i say i'm poor so does that give me to right to download it??

and you saying the vista programmers worked hard and deserve to be paid.... yet its ok for you to download it

From brazil, shove it~

By JohnnyC on 17.11.2006 - 15:11
dude, shove it. windows sux. linux does infact rock. the only problem with the entire world, is that they are caught up in tunnel vision with anything from this shitty company called microsoft ,they make all their software only run on windows, and that is the only reason linux isn't winning the war.

windows sucks.

HHAHAHAHAHA FUck it

anyone who writes that it's ok to steal needs his head kicking!!. the only problem with vista is microsofts pricing policy which namely fucks sooo many people off!!. when you think that you can buy xp through goverment schemes for £17 and office pro for £19 then the word rip off really comes to mind for the average guy. companies should pay a premium as they extensively use apps/os's to the max....just my 10p worth!!

enjoy!!

I luv stealing its my life!!!

By Why pay?? on 18.11.2006 - 16:11
why pay when u can get it for no money??? idiots pays bill gates money...... assholes

microsoft is wrong, i am using pirated vista. i just got the msdn iso, replaced some files from rc2 and used my valid rc1 key and it activates and passes all checks fine. there is a 7 month timebomb (as rc1 expires in june 07) but there will be a crack by then.

i'm buying vista though january, just have to see how much better it is than xp.

your not paying bill gates money, your paying microsoft to continue making their great products.

Vistas great

By Jasan on 21.11.2006 - 05:11
to all you cheep motherfuckers. microsoft has spent over 5 years developing vista. you best buy it when it first comes out in january. im gonna buy the ultimate edition!!

to all those people who don't pirate software, why are you here posting your useless opinion? if we don't pirate software there wouldn't be new versions.

STOP THE MICROBLOAT!

By Rebellion on 15.12.2006 - 20:12
bill stop creating your bulky fucking operating system. we don't want 1.1 gigabytes for your stupid system!.

fight the power! small operating system isos! delete un-nescessary windows install components!

no extra windows services micro$haft. no extra win services.

we want an operating system not a bloat system!

no bloat! no bloat! no bloat!

my windows xp install was 1.1 gigabytes is windows vista going to be 4 gigabytes and be filled with useless services that i don't want.

see examples: (shock! shock!)

shane brooks believes that windows 98 has many advantages to its predecessor, windows 95, in many ways besides just in its appearance. however, he does not believe that there is justification for requiring internet explorer to be installed at all times. he discovered a way of removing ie manually and presented it to the united states department of justice as evidence that microsoft was monopolizing the browser market.

have you ever wanted to remove windows components like media player, internet explorer, outlook express, msn explorer, messenger...

how about not even to install them with windows ?

nlite is a tool for permanent windows components removal and pre-installation windows setup. after removal there is an option to make bootable image ready for burning on cd or testing in virtual machines. with nlite you will be able to have windows installation which on install doesn't include, or even contain on cd, unwanted components.

Yes I agree

By Mark Russinovich on 15.12.2006 - 20:12
although i may be microsoft's bitch i definately agree its time we gave users better experience just like the linux install system that asks user's which parts to install.

i also think it would be advisable if we gave users the entire windows system and let them decide for themselves. what they want to have on their computer. i feel that 'empowering' users to make their own decisions is the right thing to do.
